Title: steering head bearings- yz125c/x etc
Post by: mainline on July 04, 2010, 04:52:41 pm
I picked up an All-Balls set of tapered needle bearings for the 125x, but the top cup and bearing sit way proud of the frame, which means the top clamp doesn't sit down where it should.

The "helpful" ebay seller has suggested (a) my bike isn't a 1976 model, and (b) I should have compared the new bearing set to the old loose ball bearings and races before I installed them ???

Has anyone been here before, and is there another brand that does a kit that works, or will the local bearing shop have a "shorter" top bearing set that'll do the trick?

I think you will find thats normal. Assemble the original bearing and measure stack height and compare this to the new bearing. I have come across this many times when converting to tapers and you think that the steering shaft doesnt come through far enough and the top bearing is too high but after some more looking at it i realised thats just how they are. There has been plenty of others who have noted this aswell. Its pretty normal. As long as you can get the top bolt/nut on then it should be fine.

mmm... ok, lucky I didn't start abusing the guy ;D

Still, telling me i should have compared loose ball bearings to the new setup before installing them ::)
