Title: XL500 Gearing for MX & RM Swing Arm mods
Post by: PB on June 30, 2010, 06:39:25 pm
Hoping for some advise?

XL500 project is taking shape. CR front end is fitted. I was hoping someone could help me with the following:

1. I have a RM400 swingarm to fit. Do they fit without modifications? And do you run the XL Wheel or RM?

2. What gearing should I run for MX?

Thanks to anyone who can help

Sorry but I have no helpful input. Just sounds like a great project. I wanted to run a tricked DR400 motor in a RM370 frame once but never got around to starting with the project. Mmmmmmm........maybe I must have a re-look at it!

Pics?

CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

I have read on a previous post about putting a RM swing arm in a XL500 frame? Before I attempt to install it I was hoping someone who has done it could offer some advise other than calling me poof boy? (BigK) Or bring up the wife, who buy the way doesn't have a clue what I am upto?

Thanks

Bundi
Save yourself all the hassel with the swingarm conversion. You'd be better off getting two old XL arms and make one longer one by cutting, welding and painting. Make the new arm the same length as the RM if this mod works as well as you believe it does. It might even allow you to run an 18" honda rear.

As for gearing, I enduro'd an XL500R in '82. I just put the biggest rear sprocket I could find because the knobbies use to make even that gearing pretty tall. (I think it was bigger than 48 teeth on 17" wheel)

Good Luck

Thanks for the comments and inspiration. Thats exactly the long term project. I already have the front end in with twin leading shoe front brake. I will probably leave the backend until after Viper on 8/8. I hopefully with Big k help will try a CR480 tank and seat. I will post some photos down the track.

Thanks again

Use your spell check. You are after some "advice" or looking for someone to "advise" you. Get it right!

hey. rm swingarm fits with minimal fuss . i run it with the xl wheel only because thats what i had . 395 - 400 length shocks . spacers between swingarm and frame on each side . small though . shocks angle in very small amount because frame mounts dont quite line up with swingarm . all said and done , works well . mines on a xl 250 , frames the same .

Thanks Ride Red

I have the swing arm and now you have given me the confidence to do it. I am happy to hear you used the xl wheel.

Big K and I have got it looking good. New front end, xr seat, painted tank, and new plastics. Looks good for  what it is.

After ravo 8/8 I will change the swing arm.

Thanks for the help.
