Hi Stan, this is timely. MA is looking for any old Barrabool memorabilia. Here's the release from MA today:
Following its purchase of McAdam Park, Barrabool, Motorcycling Australia (MA) is seeking any historical documentation relating to the property.
In an effort to further understand the historical significance of the property and establish a documented history of activity, MA would appreciate copies of any photographs, printed articles, old entry forms, event programs, or competition documentation etc. from 1960 right through to the present.
If you have anything that may be of interest and are willing to contribute there are a number of ways to do so:
Email: you can email scanned copies to [email protected] (please write McAdam Park in the subject line and limit file sizes to a total of 5MB)
Mail: you can mail these items or copies of these directly to the MA office at PO Box 134 South Melbourne VIC 3205
If you have something and are unsure if it is relevant please feel free to contact the MA office by calling (03) 9684 0500.

Gday Toolboy, I rode against Chris many times he was a great rider.
Regards Stan
-
I watched him race many times at Barrabool, Broadford, Christmas Hill, then he changed to Road Racing in the late 70's i think.
He said MX was battering his body too much, he did ok on the road too..
His brother David had an Ossa at the time but i dont think he raced???
Cheers
Tim
-
He Tim do you know what Chris is up to nowadays? Used to spend quite a bit of ime with im in the Mooralbark garage playing darts if we wern't practising at Coldsteam tip. We were both in C-grade then B-Grade with ou maicos, before Chris went big time in the roadracin. I got Chris and I copies made of the USA style Belray Maico jumpers, caused we looked the same we got pride of place in a Pollywaffle TV ad done at Christmas Hills through the Hartwell club. Big Pommy connection out that way in Melb, my Dad was a Scot, so the Dads used to probably reminise about he old country at the race meets.Sam Skillng and the Trollopes were also out that way. Noticed in he progam I'd gotten ridden of the evil KTM sachs wonder box(great handling pity about the gearox) and now had the tusty elsinore, like every other self respecting sub junior.
Ross Gillespie#86
-
Rosco,
I have not seen nor heard about Chris in over 30yrs.
But i was his biggest fan when he rode MX, i always remember the Maico he had.
Im suprised to see that he rode a Suzuki.

NUMBER 54 MICHEAL COOMBES, MONTESA THE FACTORY RIDER, CLUB Colac. HE WAS A VERY NICE FELLOW.

Michel and Gary O'Brien would have been riding some 'special' bikes whilst Michel was over here. Here's a note from Modesto Sole (Export director) about those bikes to Lyall.

My memories getting a bit blurred these days but I seem to remember Michel Coombs welding his frame together between races. Cheers Jerry
-
jERRY YOU MAY BE RIGHT, AS THE MONTESA va 125 001, was cracking up a bit, that same bike got 3rd at a world title in that same year.
-
Thanks David. I was at that meeting. I think I travelled down with Chris Oldfield. I raced there once I think in 1975 on a Ossa Phantom. I wonder does Stan have the program for that one? Jerry

NUMBER 54 MICHEAL COOMBES, MONTESA THE FACTORY RIDER, CLUB Colac. HE WAS A VERY NICE FELLOW.
He was indeed a nice bloke as well as being blindingly fast. Unfortunately he was also (to quote The Life of Brian) a very naughty boy. Something to do with cocaine I believe.

J J CALE?

I never knew that Mike Landman was a member of Frankston back then (i've been on and off...more off :D)
I also see a very young Neil Crompton in there as well.
Was Devon Meadows a popular track/club as i didn't know it existed until a few years ago and remember hearing that Neil was/could have been a member there as well.
Sorry Stan......but good to see some programs before my time...not that i ever raced MX.
Cheers...Mario
-
jerry, l was at a barrabool meeting, not sure it was you, but there was a fellow racing an Ossa Phantom, 1974 or 75, but l was tossing up wheather to buy a Montesa VR 250, Ossa, Phantom, Bultaco Mk7 250, l did end up buying a Husqvarna 250 Mag, l beautifull bike at the time, raced it for a season, but very close in buying the ossa or a Mk7. Getting back to that meeting at Barrabool, on the day there was only one person racing an ossa Phantom, and that may have been you Jerry. Micheal Coombes, great rider, but once the drugs get involved that is the end, firko did he go to Jail and for how long.
-
In 1975 Neil Crompton raced Husqvarna 360, l still have a photo of neils husky, racing at newtown track, now that was a very good track, love that track. Neil was very quick and well sponsored competitor, l am not sure what year he finished racing motocross, but he has done well for himself.

I think I was #78. Jerry

Gday Mario, I'm glad you enjoyed the programs. I raced at Devon Medows a couple of times, I remember it to be a really good sand track. Neil Crompton was a member of our club in Ballarat, the Ballarat Rovers MCC. He was an extremely good Junior Rider and did ride well in senior races but I guess his life as a professional commentator and business man then later car racer was going in a different direction to his motocycle racing. As for Mike Landman, I remember he was always a very strong Frankston club member and I raced against him many times. He was a great rider and a really nice guy as well.
Regards Stan

Does anyone know who ended up with Michel Combes factory 125 Montesa? I saw it for sale in Just bikes a few years ago.
-
Sad to say Johonny, it was sold to a Americian collector years ago, the last time l saw the bike it was at ravenswood,
-
Thanks for that info Stan and David,i got interested in MX about 77 onwards and remembered Mike Landman from then onwards.
If i recall he was part of the Milledge Yamaha team and ::) I took a liking to Yamaha YZ80s
I always thought back then that it was Gally that got me into YZs but now that i think about it i honestly think it was Mike and the Milledge team and if it was Mike on the PEPSI Mr.Motocross cans during the series.....thats if i haven't lost my marbles.
Sorry once again to go off track, but it had me thinking when it all started for me...
Thanks Stan ;)

Hey Stan S. Great info in all these programs! I have a lot of scanned photos of the 1974 event and with the help of your program scans can now put names to the numbers! I raced for Pratt and Osborne Motors starting in 1975, but alas you stop at '74. Do you have any from 1975? My first race was at Monza Park, I believe your home track. My race number was No 1! Mostly did Western Centre meetings, was C grade champ in '75, also won the Norm Mc Donald memorial trophy.
My name is Jim Van Sluys, was always spelt wrong in programs! lol! Will get these pics sorted and posted. Any info appreciated! ;D Cheers Jim, Jumbo!

Yeah David, I don't know where you were that day and I am surprised the Earls weren't at the other meeting also. Neil Crompton was a very fast Junior in 75/76. He was unlucky not to win an Australian Title in 75 in Tasmania as he fell on one of the last laps with a huge lead but couldn't get the bike started again in time.

Gday Hardex, yeah a lot of blasts from the past. I ran into Ian Skews recently at a drink/drive course that I was forced to attend, his health is failing I think. John Dunk is coming to our Bathurst do this Sunday. Wayne Carey will also probably be there to. It was Barry Bedggood. And yes it brings back good and not so good memories of Peter Edgecumbe and others that are no longer with us.
Regards Stan.
