Can somone recomend replacment forks and clamps for a 1979 CR 250
Mine came with Simons forks but there coming out to go into somthing else ::)
Anything bigger than standard will do , prefer to copy somone elses idea as i dont have time to experiment with it.
Must be Evo legal thanks Bill :)

Bill, if you want to stay Evo legel you will need to use (dair I say it) Yamaha forks.
If you us 465 forks you have 43mm and could also use the double leading shoe (legally!)
Have not done it myself as yet but would be the best (cheapest) option.

Ira even I know most people put 1983 CR 250/480 forks on these red lemons!
-
Yeah live sheep wearer but they are not evo legal due to being off a linkage bike (what that has to do with forks I don't know) but save to say the YZ option would be best for being period correct.

Flag the evo legal bullshit no one else cares about that in Sheep Country.
Its only those wallies at the Nats in Aussie that get off on that bollocks.
My dearly departed mate Magoo swore by the 1983 CR forks so I will go with what he did myself.

I can get you a deal on some TS185 forks ;D
-
I've got a set of cr 450 forks clamps and front wheel 450 forks are 41mm also the front wheel is xl500 for the larger drum
-
480 forks & clamps & front wheel are the go if you don't have to put up with rulebook racers. You will have to find an RZ/RA steering stem or shorten the 480 stem to fit the RZ chassis. Convince me there's a significant performance advantage between YZ465H forks (evo legal) & CR480 forks (not legal) and I'll shut up, otherwise it's just utter BS!
Cheers,
K

Get a set of 41mm 450 legs, have standard 79 250 yolks bored out to fit, makes a much nicer job and the feel of the front end is better.
-
Hey Shano I hear them Honda forks work better stretchwrapped!!! ;)
-
BigK is correct, Both my evo bikes (including the one old shagga43 sold me) are now fitted with Honda 480 forks but the question was Evo legal.
Craig, the cling wrap is a sore point!!!!!!!!!!

37mm bored to 41mm ! you took alot of meat of the clamps there mate.hope that they hold up.

The 43mm '83 forks are better than the 41mm '81 forks. I used to run '83 480 front ends on the '79 and '80 CR250's i had but that was before the day of the rule book Nazi's.
The safe option is to use a 43mm YZ465 front end if you plan on riding any title events, performance is equal between either.

yer but what triples? Yamaha have the big bottom bearing

Thanks blokes thats great :D i have a couple of sets of 43mm Yamaha forks so thats probably the go. however as Moto pointed out what triples do i use ??? can i do as liquer suggest and get some original clamps and get them bored out .
if so anyone got some triples for sale :)
-
You can use the CR480 triples with the '79/'80 steering stem, it fits straight in or use the YZ triples and press the YZ stem out and machine a bush to fit the '79 CR stem.

Machine a bush sounds good.I wouldn't rist the triples of a prolink.

You wont get away with boring originals out to 43mm, 41 is the maximum you can get away with in the standard yolks.

Have done loads of them here in the UK, been doing them for 17 years without a problem. ;)

I have them done on a milling machine with the clamping bolts finger tight.
