Title: Trouble identifing frame
Post by: 090 on June 22, 2010, 08:53:18 pm
I bought a frame that was supposedly to suit an '85 cr500. It is no way its an '85. Seems real close to an '84 frame as it has the bracket on lhs bottom for the black shroud to bolt to. Also cdi and coil seem to be in the same spot which is different to the '85.
Both the frames have a frame number as long as your arm like jh2peo2fc blah blah. This frame is stamped ka5-2112. Nothing else. Any one know if import bikes had a different numbering system or what the number could mean? Hoping its an ex Malherbe frame.  ::)

Hey joel i just bought a US import frame for my KX500 and it has a totally different frame number prefix to the aussie frame. Maybe the same with Honda's.

Just checked a U.S site and the numbers are similar there.

sounds like a part number to me rather than a frame number.

85 Cr500 frame number is FRAME

*R119* (FLASH RED)
50100-KA5-841ZA

so the KA5 sort of ties in, just need to find which model its from  :-\

That's the thing. There isn't one. The frame no. is KA5-2112.

hmmmmmmmm  ??? well ka5 means big bore 81-85 and the 2112 makes no sense as its one digit short to be a part number prefix and honda use the same numbersystem world wide suzuki and kawa change it for differnt markets
mabye a picture brad  ???
but heres the part numbers for 84 -86 frames

84-50100-KA5-741ZA
85-50100-KA5-841ZA
86-50100-ML3-670ZA

Yes it seems to me that its an 84. I am more curious about the numbers now.

Isnt there a difference between frame 'PART' number as found in parts book, and frame ID number? ID numbers will be different for every bike and no 2 will be the same. Capps is talking baout part numbers but the number on frame is a ID number. A phone call to a honda dealer should solve this one pretty quick.

That's what I was thinking - kinda like the engine numbers on replacement XU-1 engine blocks.

the shock resy mount is an indication its a 125 as the 500 had the ressy for the shock on the left side

It can't be a 125 or 250 it has no radiator mounts, they were all watercooled with the removable subframe. Has to be '83 or '84 air cooled big bore.
I also think it's a replacement frame with the part number stamp.

G'day Brad,

just saw this thread, i have an original 85' CR500RF frame in the shed (its your's  if you need it but it needs some work on bottom frame rails, footpeg mounts etc.) , i will take some pics for you to compare. i also bought a frame of US ebay some time back.

i will see if i can do this tonight as off for the day with Mini Hoony

here is my frame for comparison Brad

note the difference where CDI mounts (vertically behind head stem rather than horizontally abobe the coil )  also tank mounts are different ? the radiator mounts on mine, how does it compare to your 500RE & 480RD frames?

Thanks for doing that Hoony. Every thing says its an '84 500 frame. It looks like my 84 frame all but a few minor differences. At this stage I will call it a replacement frame due to the small differences and the weird frame number. John T had a good look on the weekend and its definitely factory numbers and not dodgyed up as the grain marks are in the metal (not ground back).
The two things that don't compute are that you wouldn't think there would be 2112 replacement frames built or special frames built either.
I might throw it on mxtrax to a wider audience.

Have you rang a Honda dealer or Honda Australia yet? They will have the answer.

Looks like an '84' an 83 would have the reservoir mount and chain roller bracket on the opposite sides to that frame

Yes rang an old school parts guy and even he had no answer.
It is an '84 but no solution to the frame number.
