This was my 1980 PE175 resto project. I am using it currently in our local VMX series. Also use it for social riding now and again.

Nice! I rode an 80 and an 82 way back when. The 82 especially was a ton of fun, though I have to admit to preferring my 80 IT175 at the time. These days I have almost finished restoing an IT and hope to get to ride it soon...
-
Very nice the black rims are they new or the old ones painted?
-
Everybody seems to notice the black rims first! They are the original rims cleaned up and send for powder coating. I also used a STD TS185 piston and rings when I did the engine over. So running now at 183cc.
-
Bloody nice build mate :) well done
-
what size rear tyre are you running ???
-
Nice one DT - I loved mine, but just be careful, I cracked the frame twice just above the swingarm pivot point from larger jumps - not real good for VMX.

130/90-18s
@Dave - yip but I'm not a big jumper as it is. ;D Will hopefully have a more MX orientated ride for next year.

Hi Dt how are the dc plastics with regard to colour match on the tank I do like the black wheels contemplating a different colour or black on my project 400 thanks Michael. :)
-
Not that it really matters, but I think that's an 81 model with that type of lower frame guard, ie solid welded on bars, not a separate alloy doodad.
I must be turning into a Nathan, I mean a trainspotter ;D
Very nice resto anyway mate. I love my PE175, although it's nowhere near as nice looking as this one.
-
your right mainline it is a 81 175x but the compliance plate can still be stamped 1980 for a 81 model it has the right stickers though.
-
Plate is stamped 1980. I have also ordered all my parts as 1980. But it doesn't really matter.
I am not too excited about the quality of DC plastics. The colour is not too far off but their mouldings are not very good. Very rough textured and their mounting holes are very shallow which necessitates a spacer on some of the side panels too make it work correctly. But it is a bike in constant use. Won't use it on a show bike though.
-
Yes it’s a 1981 model. I was half asleep ::) and didn’t even notice it as I was looking at how tidy the bike is. Plate date is nothing more than manufacture date of the bike. It does not indicate the model year of the bike. 90% of 80 model parts are the same as the 81 and pretty much everything interchanges and much of the 81 parts that are different to the 80 model parts are now what the 80 parts superceed to anyway so chances are you had been supplied 81 parts anyway and would not have even noticed it anyway. The major difference between 80 and 81 is tail light, bashplate, frame, stickers, muffler mounting, chain guide and a few trival things i cant think of right now.

Tx LWC ;D

Anyone have an airbox to suit this bike for sale?
-
Pretty . Seems a pity to get it dirty. :)
-
hi mate nice resto i made mine into dg replica like in back of the manual, except mines 1980,dg tank decals ,dg head, just picked up nos exhaust from old bike shop ,try to get a photo up ,don

Tx S447. Please post some photos soonest. You don't have a spare DG head by any chance? Those are almighty scarce and I can't find one for love nor money...

When you use TS 185 piston,is the sleeve thick enough?

Yes
PE standard- 62mm
PE +2mm wiseco oversize - 64mm
TS standard - 64mm
TS +2mm wiseco oversize = 66mm
PE standard capacity - 172 cc
PE +2mm wiseco oversize - 183cc
There would metal enough in the liner to at least go to 64.5 or 65mm using the TS 185 +0.50 and +1.0mm pistons
This would make the PE 175
186cc with 64.5mm TS piston
189cc with 65mm TS piston
going from 64mm to 65mm is only one extra mm remember, which is only .5mm off each side of the bore so you'd at least get that in and maybe can even go bigger. Just measure with your calipers ;)
-
Well explained LWC82PE. There is a lot of metal on the PE175 sleeve. And keeping the measurements above in mind you should be able to still go 2 sizes up from the STD TS185 piston if the need arises which should guarantee you still years of good use from the motor before you have to start thinking about re-sleeving.
-
Thanks you have made my day.Rebuilding a Pe 175 1980 and found old piston at 2mm oversize and thinking that would be the last piston before re-sleeving. :) Where's the best place for gaskets and seals.I am Northside Brisbane.Cheers

Somebody else will have to help you with that info - I am in Pretoria, South Africa!!!
P.S. No jokes about our current state of rugby >:(

Gday guys...
Late reply I know... Currently building a pe175x and I'm wondering is there any mods that need performing on the ts piston or is it a straight up fit for the pe..??
Cheers.

Glen, I have an idea that the piston dome profile is different between the PE and TS pistons. I think the TS piston dome has a smaller radius, so has more of a pronounced dome than the PE piston (the PE piston dome looks flatter). However, this may only be the case for the early (1978-79) PE175 piston with offset transfer cutaways - I haven't got a later one for comparison.
Even if true, it is usually the case that production squish bands are cast to be a little steeper than the piston dome, in which case the TS piston dome could be a perfect match for the PE squish band... :-\ .
However, there is still the possibility that you would have to machine the squish band on the PE head for a) the bigger bore and b) the correct profile. The taller dome and larger bore may also give you a greater geometric compression ratio than you need or want. Squish clearance would also need to be checked.
It may be worth investigating whether a TS185 head (from any of the various versions) will fit the PE cylinder, but (if so) it also may not give the compression ratio or squish clearance you want. Whatever the case, I'm pretty sure the ring pegs on the latest TS185ER piston are in the same positions as those on the early PE175 piston (not sure about later type).
Please let us know if you discover anything more!
Regards,
James

Thanks for that info mate...I was thinking the squish would need adjustment but the dome wasn't something i considered...It's been a good Xmas because i picked up a ratty 175x with a strong motor & I'm using it on this build for now..but I'm definitely interested in getting to the bottom of the ts piston mod...thanks again.

Theres a magazine article where the TS piston mod is mentioned. I dont recall any significant mods that need to be done. Its pretty simple just get a TS piston, measure it compared to PE piston, trim skirt or what ever needs doing and away you go. The article should be in the 'magazines' section on Yahoo forum, actually no it will be on 'Lukes Onedrive' but you can get to that via the FAQ section on Yahoo PE forum. Yes TS head will fit but you wont need it.

Cheers...I'll dig into one drive ..
Much appreciated and happy New year guys.

i got a feeling its in one of the full floater modification articles in USA 'Dirt Bike'

Ah ok...been looking in T&X magazine section of one drive,,,I'll keep looking but the ashes has me occupied lol...
