So Who Won the State of Origin last night?

Ji
The NRL was the big winner ;) ;D (Another great game with 68,000 paying customers, broadcast to 90 countries etc etc).

Oh, and the Queenslanders went home happier than the Blues  :-[ :'(.

Im from Victoria home of the salary cap cheats and just don't rate rugby as a sport. That aside I watched some of it last night trying to fathom why people do actually enjoy it. As usual I still reckon it's crap but a couple of things intrigue me. Can you throw the ball forward a little bit (or is that just the TV doing that?) and are the scrums now just token scrums. Was there a change in the scrummage thing because of neck injuries or something like that?Cheers Jerry

Well Jerry no you are not allowed to forward pass but there was plenty of that happening last night on both sides. I think the problem is that the refs are in different position now than before and that makes it hard for them to pick a forward pass. The side line judges inform the ref if he sees it or there is time.

The scrums are a joke now. They feed the ball in behind the front line. No need for a hooker anymore.

No need for prostitutes in rugby. Interesting. Do they have high class ones for Union? Jerry

The league players are very cost effective, they get 12 of them in the room with one girl.

One more and it could be the entire team!!

Sorry, he was busy taking a dump in the hallway…

Hay Commissioner Gordon,
Don't worry about the salery cap thingy.
Scotty Prince was accused of receiving a $450 000.00 home for free that breached the cap.
I have not seen any more about that one.
I am sure they are all doing it.

Well Jerry no you are not allowed to forward pass but there was plenty of that happening last night on both sides.
I can't say I saw one blatant forward pass last night. Some pretty close but that's the nature of the professional game; it's a game of cm's ;). You must remember the rule is the ball must leave the hands backwards which means if the player is running forward the ball will also be going forward and continue going forward even if it is passed sidewards.

I think the problem is that the refs are in different position now than before and that makes it hard for them to pick a forward pass. The side line judges inform the ref if he sees it or there is time.
Did you see the ref have now got sponsorship from OPSM ;D. True. Absolutely true. And 'about bloody time' goes up the chorus :D.

The scrums are a joke now. They feed the ball in behind the front line. No need for a hooker anymore.

Yeah, as a schoolboy front row forward (League and Union) it's sad to see. They use to be a great contest for the ball, I use to absolutely love 'em. But being tall and having developed a knack, I could pack down and come in over the top of my opposite number and 1 in 3 times I would bow his back. Well they could push against me and my straight back from that moment. I've seen my opposite number with both feet off the ground and 100 stone on my side pushing against 100 stone on his side  - how I didn't break someone back I've got no idea (and ditto to me because I had my back bowed a few times as well - but never feet off the ground bowed 8).  And that's before any 'collapse of the scrum' awkwardness.

And that's why the rule is the half 'puts the ball in' - no striking for the ball (although it does happen about once a season), pushing the other side off the ball (although it does happen about once a season), and no packing the scrum to intimidate the other side.

I use to play league at high school for the under 15s and seniors in the same season, thats were I got my bad knee.
Our coach was Greg Olaphant (I hope I spelt that right).
He was a front rower for the Dolphines and got his back broken in a scrum.
Very dangerous scrums and now a joke they should just do a hand over.

So was the scrum changed for safety reasons?
Title: Re: Who Won The State of Origin Last Night

So was the scrum changed for safety reasons?
Yep.

They tried various changes to the scrum before they settled on the current rule. The rule has taken the contest out of the contest and in particular reduced the chances of a collapsed scrum and 'broken necks' back injuries. It's been very successful from this point of view.

Ditto the concern and 'err on the side of penalty' for the 'head high' tackle. Taking all the fun out of it - nothing quite as satisfying as a well administered 'coat hanger' (so long as you're not on the receiving end ::).

In league when the bloke with the ball gets tackled why does he get roughed up when he's on the ground? Isn't enough that he's been stopped? Jerry

Its to put fear into them so they won't carry the ball again.

It doesn't happen does it :o.

(The defending team tries to 'slow down the play of the ball' as long as possible as a quick play the ball favours the attacking team (it takes longer to set and organise the defence than it does to attack). The 'roughing up', the outlawed 'grapple tackle' and multiple tacklers is all part of the ploy to slow down the play the ball.)

Go the mighty Maroons. Went to the game- my first Origin live. What a hoot, I have got about half my voice back!
Hey JiGantor, I played juniors for the Redcliffe Dolphins. From about 69 -72 before the family moved to Sydney. Tony Obst was our coach one year- played fullback for QLD. What vintage were you Ji?

Jeese let me think.
Its easier to dig up my old jerseys and photograph them then remember that.

I played footy in 1978.

The Dophins are still the best footy club in QLD.
They support just about every country club and haven't they produced some great players.

The atmospher at the ground must have been fantastic.
Were you sitting with the group with the maroon hair wigs, you know the winners.

Way to go you played for QLD.

My best memory was playing under 15s at Lang Park in 1978.
As I remember it I just about blew chuncks when I walked out, not because of the other side but because I got to walk out on that blessed grass.

Good god, what a shocker! As much as it hurts me to say it, Queensland are a phenomenal footy side. I wish the NSW selectors would pick a team of players with passion and in their correct positions. I'm buggered if I know what Nathan Merritt and John Sutton have to do to get a start. Merritt plays all over Joel Monaghan yet Monaghan gets brought in to replace Timana Tahu after playing only three games this season. As good a club player Jarrod Hayne is for Parramatta, he's not fit to wipe the sweat off Billy Slaters brow at Origin level.

Thank christ our Rugby Union team just edged out the Q-landers or it'd be sad times down here.

What a bunch of knuckleheads NSW put on the feild!!.....you even had the ref's on your side....arrrhhh QLD..what can you say?. A little story, when Graham Murray went to coach the NQ Cowboys he asked each player what they wanted to acheive by seasons end....NSW players all wanted to win the premiership.....QLD players wanted to be picked to play State of Origin for QLD and win....as Gus Guold would say ...."you cant beat that, you cant beat that"..... I would love Gus to coach QLD one day....faaarrrk..wouldnt that be a hiding?. Love him or hate him, Gus is one smart cookie, I'm just glad he is not coaching NSW.

It did.
The weird thing about Rugby Leagues continuing dramas is that most of the press coverage and "inside scoops on the scandals" are driven by the Murdoch press, the part owner of the game. It's almost as if they want their own product to fail or that they think that they need all of these scandals to publicise the code.

Even though I'm a Rugby Union fan above all, I think that Rugby League is a great game that was indeed once "played by wharfies, watched by wharfies, and run by wharfies" but today is a great spectacle, just perfect for TV. Despite AFLs amazing fan base, great administration and superb player athleticism, it and the other footy codes can't match League as a made for TV game and I think the TV ratings back that. Rugby has its Super 14 and great International Tests, League has the State of Origin and test matches but AFL has none of those big spectaculars unless you count the piss poor hybrid game 'tests' they play against Ireland or their own less than successful State of Origin experiment.

My wandering point is that despite all of the cheating, racism and myriad of other scandals, League will always be the game for the people, the "wharfies" if you like. It's a Sydney thing. The toff thing doesn't go over well with us, perhaps that's why working class South Melbourne "bloods" morphed so smoothly into the Sydney Swans.

After the game last night I flicked over to the round ball game and after 20mins nothing had happened and the noise of the gorgonzollas-or whatever they are- had me nodding off.

That's something that's crept into the game and I reckon it's plain wrong. Alfie plays just about the whole game on the field shouting directions to the players. He's as much a water boy as I am a Calvin Klein underwear model. Ronny Palmer started this shit with Easts a few years ago and it's now becoming a problem that the Rugby League don't seem to want to do anything about.

Anyone that has played the game would realise that the trainer on the field (Alfie) would help to fill gaps in the defence-in the minds of the attacking players I mean-especially when you are a bit tired and are looking for those gaps. Very old trick played by both sides and shouild be shit canned!!!
Wont matter soon as there will be more refs on the field than players.

Word from the " INSIDE " , as I hear it is.
There is & has been entrenched nepotism at the top for way to long.
Timana Tahu came back from Union because he couldn't get a decent run in the centres.
After being chosen on the wing for the second game his nose was out of joint and to hear Joey revving up Beau Scott ( while on the piss ), saying that he's the man to stop GI, he was peeed off that they thought he wasn't capable of getting the job done and the rest is history.
He originally offered up the first 2 excuses, himself, before he was in so deep that he had to go the distance.
I must add that I'm not condoning what anyone said just shedding some light.
The 2 things I hate most are Racists and Asians :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

Three - NIL!!

Pre game training for the NSW 2010 state of origin team in Sydney was delayed nearly two hours late this morning, after a player reported finding an unknown white powdery substance on the ground.

Initially officials thought it was a prank!!

The Coach immediately suspended training, while police and ASIO were called to investigate.

After a complete analysis, NSW Police forensic experts flew to the scene and determined that the white substance,   unfamiliar to most of the players, was in fact, the try line.

Practice was resumed this afternoon after Police & ASIO decided the team was unlikely to encounter the substance again

It'd be hard to pick a side to beat the Maroons right now. They're a great team. The first thing NSW has to do now is sack the selectors, get younger more adventurous blokes in their place that are prepared to pick players on merit and in their rightful positions. Next they have to pick a figurehead coach who reeks passion like Mal and his team.  Gus Gould could do the technical stuff and Tommy Raudonikus can pump 'em up. They need to get rid of the egos like Jarryd Hayne who was showed up by Billy Slater as the over rated imposter he is. They need a halfback that can organise and take and give a hit like Souths Chris Sandow. If he isn't the toughest little bloke in Rugby League I'll make a comeback for Randwick on the wing. ;) The Blues need to start a gradual rebuild using young blokes who can maintain the comittment over the next five years, like the ARU have done with the Wallabies. They got rid of the old school coach, retired off the old stalwarts and started picking a bunch of new kids who have fire in their bellies. It should all come of age around World Cup time.

I'd be prepared to lose another State of Origin series as long as the team selected showed spirit and a will to fight and is kept together as a unit to blend into a tight unit that plays like a team that plays every week, just like the Queenslanders. What we've got now is a bunch of good players playing like ther met for the first time just before kickoff. Until the changes I mapped out are done we're going to continue to lose. Now..bring on the All Blacks and Springboks. It's Tri Nations time.

Mark, I'm pretty sure Chris Sandow is a Queenslander, that didn't stop GI & Izzy being picked for them though.
With the team they have at the momment I can't see us beating them for a few years yet.
