Hi just wondering if anyone else has found bikes at the dump, i have found xt500,pe 175,xl 500,xl250,it250,it175,rm80,xr100,dr600,dt400,yz 80,and heaps of spare parts.
All came from the Mount Isa dump,The xt500 and xl500 run and the it250 needs a new cdi.
I'm going to miss Mount Isa when i leave next Month to move to Mackay.
-
Shit, I'm moving there!
-
Why Brad
why would you live at the tip.
::) ::)
-
Yes there is nice caravan there for Brad to live in
-
not that I was really looking, but there seemed to be some bits of corn?
-
:D :D
I hate cleaning up.
An aboriginal walks into a bar with an Ibis on his shoulder. "I'll have a pint" says the Aboriginal. "Where did you get that?" said the bartender.
The Ibis says "I found him at the tip!"
-
There is a Ossa Phamton buried at the Portarlington trip., l have found yz 250 g engines.
-
Hardhaacker, it's coincidence that you're going to Mackay as that's where we had one of our good tip finds. I was visiting my mate (I'm from Sydney) who serviced pumps and compressors for a living. I went with him on one of his daily service runs and the final service call of the day was to the local bus company. Behind the bus shed was a tip of sorts where they dumped old bus tyres and other junk. After Rob had done his gig at the bus depot I was sitting in his van while he sorted the paperwork. The van faced the tip and while staring out at the tyre pile I saw something shiny sitting on top. Curiosity got the better of me so over I wandered to see what it was. Bugger me if it wasn't a '74 Maico alloy coffin tank in perfect nick. A bit more digging uncovered the frame, front wheel and forks, seat and much of the 250 engine. When we asked the bloke at the bus depot about the stuff he told us it'd been dumped there a couple of years earlier by a bloke who had once worked there. The bus guy had only placed the tank on top of the tyre pile earlier that day after finding it inside a tyre. If he hadn't done that, and if we hadn't gone there that day we wouldn't have got the stuff for the six pack of NQ Lager it cost us and it'd probably still be there.
I found a really rusty A50 BSA at the tip about 10 years ago which I sold on and I know of a guy who found an M11 Bultaco Metisse in almost complete condition at a tip in countrt Victoria a few years ago. The best tip find I ever saw though was the 1958 Corvette roller a Swedish friend found at a tip in Bishop California in 1984 and bought for $100. It'd been a drag car and was in ratty shape but have you seen the price on '58 Corvettes today? It's now restored and living in Sweden.
-
Yeah in the early 90's i found 2 RM250A's at a local Gold Coast dump and took the carbies off them and left them there! Been kicking myself ever since but vintage racing was only pre '75 then so i figured they were useless.

The buried ossa is a shame but you can only imagine how many great bikes have went to the tip over the years why new ktm's are going there already.
-
My TM125 Zook was a dump shop find along with about half an XT500.
I had to pass up on what appeared to be a complete but stripped first model XL250 a few years back as I had no where to put it!
There are alot of bikes that get dumped up here but it seems there is a bit of competition.
Hardhaacker, where is the Isa dump? I'm passing through on Tuesday 2June on the way to CD7. I might have a nosey

Most dumps these days have savaging rules (or non-savaging rules) and someone there to enforce them. If you are a local you should leave a phone number and a 'expression of interest' in old motorcycles and you'll probably get first or second 'right of refusal' ;) :) for the occasional beer down the pub.
The best I've done is pick up a few bits dumped in the bush :-\.
-
The bloke that worked at my local dump for a while was an old dirt bike nut too, so no chance of anyone else getting anything. :-\
-
I spoke to a guy who took a load to the dump and spotted a wheel sticking out of some other rubbish. He had a look and discovered it was a complete Bultaco of some sort. He pulled it out and put it on the trailer. The guy that worked there saw him and told him to put it back as they had a strict policy on removing stuff!!!. He said he was prepared to pay the guy something and didn't expect it for free, but was still told to put it back. So he did. If it was me, I would have gone back after hours and taken it. 8) 8)
I think it was in Bunbury WA.
-
damn I hate transfer stations such as our local tip :( Takes all the fun out of going to the dump! ::)
-
Someone told me once that there is an oval somewhere (i cant remember, where exactly but i think in Vic or NSW) and he said there is a heap of old Indians and or Harleys burried under the oval. I think they were left overs from WW2 or something. I also know a few guys who go up north in SA and look for old Harley, Indian, Triumph, BSA etc parts out in the desert regions and at old rubbish dumps, but they reckon they have cleared most of the stuff out now and a lot of it, at least the good stuff is gone, but back 20-30 years ago there was stacks of old bikes up there at old stations and just burried out in the desert at dumps. In the next few years i have to restore a 1930's Harley for a guy who paid $100 for it to take it off a guy who was on his way to the dump with it about 15-20 years ago and all the old Harley guys say you will just never get any bargains like that any more and you harldly see any 20's and 30's Harley stuff at swapmeets nowdays.
-
hey hardhacker have you checked out
the camooweal tip i hear its the best
-
How about a Honda Goldwing K1, in pieces but only missing speedo, resto project for when the racing days are over. Wonder how i`ll go at the RTA when proof of owner ship is a $10 reciept from the local tip.
-
Our local tip grabs all that kind of stuff and has a big shed where they sell it but I reckon you'd have to be very quick to spot it first. :)
-
Our local tip grabs all that kind of stuff and has a big shed where they sell it...
Ours does too, but they let all of the good stuff through, and save utter crap. There was a 90% complete DT1F in the scrap pile, while the 'shop' had a chip-board set of drawers that were falling apart!?
I made the mistake of asking about getting the DT1, and was point blank refused.
Of course, if I'd just dragged it out of the pile and into the ute, I probably wouldn't have been challenged for it.
-
Just had a thought. I reckon that that oval i mentioned is at Griffith or Wrangaratta (dont know how to spell it) or maybe Albury Woodonga. Those are names that ring a bell to me and i reckon it starts with 'W' and is in the border sort of area of Vic-NSW. There would have to be an old local that knows about it.
-
If it were in wangaratta the rust wouldn't be a problem inland a fair bit but it is a big place so I am guessing if any thing were there it wouldn't be now.
-
i find corn in the dump all the time a day afterwards.

thats great hoony ::)

Another good place to find interesting dumped stuff are these little unmaned temporary scrap metal yards popping up around our area. 2 guy's that I work with have over the last 3 or 4 months spotted and grabbed a full ride on mower and a couple of weeks ago a complete GPX250. The one that got the mower is now cutting his lawns with it and the one with the GPX has got it going and nearly ready to register it. Amazing what people throw away.
Stan.

more rubbish ;) ;D

The people who run the dump are real people and let you have bikes for a couple of bucks, the 78 xt500 i found had no tank.
the bike cost me 5 bucks , took it home cleaned the points and away it went and runs strong.
1 week later and went back and the alloy tank was there and a front wheel off a late model it, and had the axle and twin leading brake.
-
i find corn in the dump all the time a day afterwards.
LOL....if i found a bike in my dump...how would you stop the bleeding?
-
The urban myth as I heard it was that when the 2nd war was done & dusted, the Yanks, who were baracked at Homebush in Syd, buried heaps of equipement along with dozens of WLA's ( still in crates ) when they moved out.
I'm pretty sure they would've been found during the Olympic development.
My father had a bike shop in Syd during the late 50 's and through heaps of Harley's away because no one wanted them.
Shame.
-
Just be careful about what you get from the tip.I heard about a guy who got a scooter from the local tip shop only to find out later when he went to rego it that it was stolen.
-
Not bikes but... story in the local paper recently about a nutter (?) who was adamant that a WW1 cannon of historical significance was buried somewhere in the Echuca (i think) tip. Cost him heaps in time, money, marriage went down the gurgler and everone thought he was stupid, but guess what, he was right!! Eventually found it, and is now being retsored i think. Another urban legend- maybe- is local chicken producer HAZELDENES bought a XYGTHO in the early 70's, and later used it as a work hack, driving it into the ground before dumping it in the local tip about 1979. A friend of mines older brother worked there after school cleaning up chook shit, and claims that was the vehicle they used to tow the trailer.
-

You wouldn't want to know how many variations of this story I've heard :o ::) :D. Somewhere out there one of these stories is probably correct but it has also given birth to the thousands of variations 8).

Shame.
My father was in the arty during the war and were in the western desert they were issued with WLA's (the bike that won the war if you were to listen so some of the Harley faithful ::)). Dad reckons they were left where the were issued - they were a heavy useless piece of shite.
WLA's were still on the T.O.E. for many units such as the MP's into the 60's - and were just as popular ::).

My new job I started today..... is the solo operator of the local transfer tip and recycle sales shed :D Cheers Tim754 (not a joke this is for real!)
-
pick me up some suzuki's Tim ;) but on the gtho don't doubt that my dad was telling me when they were worth a bit at the start of them coming collectable a guy he new cut and shut a normal xy sedan rear into the gt front and you couldn't tell it would have happened to countless don't worry I have all the gtho posters on my wall but when you see one you think it is probably a mock up.
My dad nearly bought a yellow phase 2 ho and a monza green xy gt but that was when they were plentiful and cheap but then he said it wouldn't matter if he had of bought he would have writen it off eventually ::)
I was looking at the local ford show and a lot have closed bonnets and a gtho badge on the glove box so you don't know.
The valiant database is really good we looked up an e55 charger a mate owned a long time ago and found it and it was the only 1 in the combination he had it but I have seen gt tags sell on ebay aswell as writen off e55 e49 and alike.
-
Around 1963 my mates and myself often played in a car dump just off Anzac Parade at Malabar. There were heaps of old cars dumped there including a '37 ford coupe that the bloke actually drove there. One day a tip truck came and dumped a full load of old motorcycles straight into the pit. I can't remember most of what was there but recall that most of them were complete and probably British. One of them I do remember was an ex Army Harley WLA that a couple of the bigger teenage kids dragged out of the pit and pushed home. Not long after they got those big crusher things in and compacted the lot before dumping tons of building rubble from the demolition of the old WW2 Army base at Pagewood. It's now a pair of footy ovals and netball courts.
-
Back when I was a skiboat builder, I had an old hull which was stuffed and IMO beyond repair. The day I dropped it off at the tip, was unbelievable, there were two guys arguing over it and it was gone before I was!
Then there was the early Ford Fairlane which some had turned into a convertable, complete with 360 engine and rag top, but fairly rusty and in poor condition. I was too young to realise and left it there, doh!
Cheers,
K

me and me brother retrieved half a ke125 and a dt 100 from the local dump. while we were pulling them from the scrap pile the clock struck 5 and the bloke who was working there went home and locked the gates. we had to call our neighbour who worked for the council and had a key. but on the plus side we didnt need to pay for the bikes, not that they were worth much
-
My Indian 125 was found at Husky tip ;D that was about 12 years ago.jimson
-
it's amazing what gets thrown away. Back when I was a kid in the air cadets - a change of government meant they disbanded for a period all air, army and sea cadets in Oz - everything that was owned by a local unit was dumped. We had 303 rifles with 22 Morris tubes in them for indoor shooting - everyone of them was sawn across the barrel and dumped in the Derwent! I thnk some of the smarter officers hid soem gear - such as our flight simulator ;D
-
When I was a Kid the old man bought a block on Moreton Isl.
Some guys had decided to take their bikes over there and they ended up in the dump .
That dump is making news now because it,t reappeared to everyones horror :o
Anyhow I got a 500 AJ motor , mate grabbed a 500 Matchy motor { left the frames there } our neighbour got a real good 350 AJ complete , was sitting in his shed all wrapped up, probably still there.
We left the indian and the harley { not interested} ::)
-
Does anyone have any pics of turning dump finds into masterpieces?
That would be the awesome basket case restoration
-
Not found at the dump, but left on the door step !! ;D (http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r259/vmx247/tscr.jpg)
-
Lozza will take it ;D
-
Alison, I been looking long and hard and wtf is that!! :-\ TS250 yeah but the frame looks..ummm.. somewhat modified! :P the '69 TS250 I have was I believe 'on the way to the dump' (have to confirm that with Ed PERM) it's now much more attractive but i wouldn't say it's a masterpiece ;)
-
Would you believe the frame is a 76 Honda CR.!!
-
I was nearly going to ask is it a honda frame because of the little sticker on the headset but i thought nah, no-one would be so silly ::) jeez, some people have no respect! I can't imagine wasting a perfectly good TS motor by fitting it into a dirty old Elsinore frame ;D
-
If you are ever passing through Winton in central Qld, stop and check out Arnos Wall! It is a well-known tourist attraction behind the pub where Banjo Patterson wrote Waltzing Matilda. Arno is a local character who scours the local tip for interesting stuff to add to his already huge wall surrounding his house. I spotted a complete Maico 250 engine(70s) concreted into the wall! Definately worth a look.
Cheers, Shane
-
If you ever passing through Goornong Victoria take a look at the little dump / refuse transfer station there. Well you will find um me... the facilty's operator/co-ordinator/workforce/shitkicker ...Tim754 ;)
-
Since I've been working in CQ,I have yet to spot any old bikes at the tip,or lying around in farm sheds.
Must say I'm a bit disapointed.
I thought out in the country bikes and parts would be sitting out front of everyones property, like brown snakes, and I was going to have a glut of bikes to bring home.
I s'pose if I was into old cars I'd be on a winner, plenty of them lying around out here.
Cheers,Mark.

Scored the remains of an 81 kdx175 and 81 dr250 from maybe a dump....or not..... :) They are pretty crook but good forks, triples, rear wheels, dr frame is ok and good front wheel. kdx had an engine ,pipe and cdi but a mate grabbed it for his go kart thingy.
-
One of my first jobs as an apprentice, was to take a heap of old, unwanted Golden Fleece stuff to the dump. This included all the signage from a servo like the plastic sheep off the bowsers, the huge signs off the roof etc. :'(
Hindsight is a wonderful thing........ ::)
-
I personally haven't had a lot of success at the tip but I've seen a few doozies over the years.
*A guy I know was dumping garden clippings at the tip on a Saturday morning and was lined up to pay the fees when, looking in the rear view mirror he noticed a lair of handlebars attached to a motorbike in a ute. He walked back to have a look and discovered the bloke was dumping a fairly complete Bultaco M11 (Metisse) complete with sunburst head and all of its original fibreglass except for the front 'guard. My friend managed to convince the bloke to follow him to his house and they cut a deal (I think it was $50)
for the bike.
* Another former Sydney vintage racer was going through the recycle area at Walgrove tip looking for a whipper snipper to build a cocktail blender and noticed a Husky motor of some sort in a milk crate. He asked the tip guy where the rest of the bike was and he was told that it'd been tucked away in a shipping container after someone had left $20 deposit on it a month earlier but hadn't come back. He was told to wait a week and if the other bloke hadn't turned up the Husky was his. Well a week went by, the original guy hadn't returned so my friend got a 1978 Husky WR360 for $100.
* Another mate got a rough but complete 250 KLX Kawasaki and a CB250 Honda that actually ran for $100 each, also at Walgrove tip.

When I was young and just started dating I had a girl friend that asked me to "Kiss her where it smelled"so I took her to the tip.

Never happens to me but i have 2 freinds who are natural magpies,
Mate 1 : about 6 months ago while driving home after dropping the kids at schools spots a 81 XL500 complete original condition on nature strip. Finds out the bloke put it out for scrap metal pickup. Scored it for a slap. Runs like new.
Mate 2 : about 7 years ago finds a 74 Honda Cr250on hard rubbish. Got it running. Sold last month for $1400.
-
Given a Rickman zundapp metisse complete except for barrel and head. $100 for a 1981 Suzuki RM250Z, motor turns over, needs exhaust, carby, axles and various bolts. Big year ahead!!!
-
First dump find for me was in the early 70's it was a PUCH, next was a bike that i intercepted before it made it all the way to the dump a CZ then a xl185 wich i got going, xr75k1 motor went to rebuild it but needant bothered it didn't need it, ahh those where the days :) no dump finds for the last 15 years :'( still have the xr75 its in a k3 frame get this that me mate raced as a kid at T.T.G which i swaped for other dump finds, that bike did do teach heaps of kids to ride and was ridden by the bloody big kids (ADULTS) as well its still going still teaching still has the origanal rubber rim savers with tungsten carbide knobs (i think thats how hard they are now) only things done to it in the past 24 years petrol, oil change, points reset and airfilter oh and pumped the tungsten rim savers up a few times :o

I've done a few rides out in the desert and I was offered a shed full of bikes that were heading to the tip. I turned them down sight unseen because I knew what they would be. Most of the stuff out there that I have seen is either ag bikes or TS185er's, KLR's TTR225's etc. all flogged past death with lots of farm engineering to keep them just running.
-
Mate of mine was collecting scrap metal and often had over 14 ton in his backyard.
I often saw complete bikes in the heap.
At that time I had no interest.
Duhhhhhh :'(

found a carby ,set bars, complete front end, rear swing arm and a staintune all off a 2001 tt250 at Middlemount dump at chrissy, was doing a dump run for daughter and son a law who are up there working on the mines. Pipe and bars and maybe front end all going on the KLX, woo hoo. The son in law is on constant dump watch duty ;)
-
Went to a local tip-maybe- and saw a drum brake rear end sticking out of a pile of rubbish. Tip bloke may have said grab it.... turned out to be most of an 88 husky wrk 250! grabbed all the bits i could see an dragged it home. Found a clutch cover with a good water pump, chucked it on then rode it!
USD forks, disc front, ohlins, brembo, marzochi, cagiva engine...... :)
-
You blokes are all bastards..... :D :D :D
Hey Tony, is that a 70 or a 90?
I've got lots of engine parts for 90cc stuff if you need anything.

I know a bloke who was friends with a bloke at his local tip and would tell him if any bikes were dumped there. It paid off when someone dumped an unused Dick Mann Specialties TT500 frame kit, with the footpegs still in a plastic bag tied to the frame

genuine HO story... local shitkarter here had a hot XY(or XW who really cares) ute. let young son drive (Idiot....!!!) it was written off..as young sons do....
so ol mate says "lets find an xy body and put the ute motor in it" as a nice father / son project
so at the pub some mook says "theres and old XY body in the creek up there..."
so off they go and yep under a HQ wagon is a rusty XY... they winch the HQ off it and drag it home for a full clean and check over ...rusty bucket of poooh... turned out to be one of Fred Gibsons race cars!. no crap..
some guy had bought the xy when the team had gone to the XC car. he put the race motor in his hot ute and chucked the body into the creek!
after an expensive resto, they took it to a historic race and some of the old team mechanics confirmed its history..genuine car
-
A mate of mine looked at a XW which had a 6cyl in a rip off car yard at homebush. he saw the tacho in the dash, looked underneath saw a 9 inch, then looked at the tag JG33! No shaker etc. Quickly called his brother who grabbed $1500 and then purchased it. He then rebuilt the car, it turned out to be a XW Phase 2 1/2 so a late model phase 2...

It doesn't matter Dave there keepers ;D Jimson

Nice find, but do the right thing and leave them hanging on the shed wall. They offer very little ankle and lower leg support. Yes, they were the boots to have in the day(compared to army surplus flying boots etc).Boots have come a log way since then.
If you intend to do any serious riding, buy a pair of modern style boots(good second hand will do) and save yourself a lot of doctors bills. 8)

Got to be better than Thongs :o ;D

I'm in total agreement with Moto on Rossi Boots. I think there's a really good reason they were at the tip. In a nutshell Rossi boots are the root cause of me walking with a permanent limp for the last 30+ years. I've related the story on here before but I'll repeat it in the interest of public safety.......Back in 1983 We were trail riding in the Watagans when at the end of the day while my mates were prepping the campfire I decided to go for a short solo fang along a particularly fast section of fire trail we'd ridden earlier in the day. All was going well when without warning the front wheel on my Maico 490GS threw up a 20mm thick tree branch which speared into my ankle, penetrating the boot and knocking my foot off the peg and, as I was going at a fair clip, the tree kept hitting the ground , impaling the branch even further into my ankle until the pointy bit came out the other side. I managed to bring the bike to a stop and fell to the trail with the metre long stick poking out both ends of my ankle and blood pissing out everywhere. I didn't have to be an orthopedic surgeon to realise that I was in a fair bit of trouble so I took my Jersey off and made a tourniquet and waited in the fading light until someone found me. I can still remember the sounds of the silence of the bush except for the ringing sound of bellbirds and thinking that if nobody found me soon that I was ratshit. Eventually after what seems like an hour (but was probably 10 minutes) and with about 15 minutes until dark I heard the sound of an approaching 2 stroke from the opposite direction from where I'd come from. Eventually a total stranger on a brand new white tank Husky arrived and after a few gasps at seeing my weird injury managed to get me onto his seat and he slowly piggy backed me to my camp where my mates were just about to leave on a search mission themselves. I was quickly thrown in the back of my mates Hi-Ace van and rushed to Gosford hospital where I underwent a tree removal in emergency and then the first of four operations to mend the ankle joint and associated tendon damage. It was a flucking mess. Over the next 30 years I had three more operations and finally last year ankle fusion surgery which has given me the first pain free existence since 1983. The total was four major corrective surgeries, four "tune up" surgeries, an overall total of two plus months in hospital, six months (at least) off work and the end of any thoughts of a dancing career.
If I'd been wearing my usual Sidi boots the branch would have just bounced off and I wouldn't have even noticed it. Unfortunately, I'd lost one of my boots on the previous ride (I left them on the trailer and one fell off on the journey home) so I'd dusted off an old pair of Rossi's that someone had given me. When the branch hit the Rossi boot it hit a stitched joint that is in a vulnerable place making it easy to penetrate through the cotton stitching. Most serious motocross boots have a moulded or double thickness section protecting the ankle area but Rossi's are merely over grown versions of their work boot product and have little ankle support. Since the beginning of VMX I've been a bit of a campaigner against Rossi Boots (and Taiwanese Gunnar Gasser throttles) and to this day if I see someone at the races with Rossi's I have to tell them this tale. Don't wear them Garry, put 'em next to the jousting sticks in the poolroom.

While Rossi's look the part (I never owned any, graduated from Blunnies to Sidi's) it never failed to amuze how long it took to put a pair on!!!

1980 XL250SA.
I picked this up from the farm just down the road from my place this morning. It has been parked out in a paddock beside a pile of plastic pallet for about 3 years, originally on its sidestand, but for the last year or so it has been laying on its side after the stand sank into the dirt. I have been watching it slowly deteriorate all the time as I drive past the place daily going to and from work. The place has been unoccupied for the past few years, but this morning the owner was there cutting firewood when I was coming back from my regular tip run. I asked if he was going to do anything with it. The answer was no, and he gave it to me, conditional that if/when I get it going again I let him have a ride. He said it was running when he parked it there, but then they all say that. The engine turns over, which is more than what can be said about the rear wheel which is locked solid. It will take a lot of work to get it back to a ride-able bike, but I have some bits from a 1981 model in the shed which will help cut the cost down a bit. So, I now have another project. I don't think I will try and put it back to original, might turning it in to a bit of a vintage enduro bike. but I will have to wait and see how things go on my Husky at Harrow next weekend.

Think I will keep it and restore it instead ????????
Found out it was last raced at Hillview Muswellbrook 6 hour where it seized in the 2nd hour. Was dumped in the bush for 12 months (1963-4) then the old mate found it and brought it home in bits. Sat like that ever since until he moved recently, was taking it to the dump when I dropped in for a visit, good timing.

Followed me home, wife said I can keep it. :-)

The wife did a tip run yesterday, and the tip superintendent, asked her if I would be interested in and old Yamaha that had been dumped on the scrap metal pile (normally I do our regular fortnightly tip runs, so I know the super quite well). Anyway, she actually told me about it when I got home last night, surprisingly!
After picking me up this afternoon, the wife took me to the tip to have a look at the bike, turns out it was a 1974/5 Yamaha AG175. It was a bit of a wreck, with the normal welded on gear lever, a surprisingly good bodge to fix the clutch cover, a seized rear wheel and a lot of part missing, but for $10 you can't expect too much. None to say it went into the back of the ute and is now at home and joins the ever increasing collection of old Yamaha Ag bikes, making it 2 complete AG 175 and 4 incomplete ones.
The new bike!

A surprisingly good bodge job!
I have just had a go at turning the engine over with the kick start, and the kick start doesn't engage, so I suspect that it might have done the old trick of snapping the end off of the counter shaft where the kick start idler gear is. I have seen this quite a few times with these engines if they kick back.

The only Yamaha I like, must be that orange paint. I have 5 of these things, I have to restore one for a mate and one for myself.

His dad delivered it the next morning. Total $40 delivered. Complete including the speedo, ratty preston pretty light and Bassini pipe.

Not VMX, but still a dump find.
I got a call from the superintendent at the local tip on Thursday afternoon, asking if I was interested in an Orange Yamaha 100, as a guy had just turned up with one on a trailer. He knows me well, because of course I was interested. That was all the info I had until this morning when I went and picked it up.

Its a 1977 Yamaha YB100. and it is virtually complete, which is way more than i expected. The only thing missing is the LH handle bar switch assy and clutch lever. Of course I spent a bit of time checking it over once I got it home. It looks like it was just parked in a shed and forgotten about. 14592km on the clock, no rust in the fuel tank, engine turns over but was quite dry when I lifted the head. The only problem I have found was a mouse nest inside the frame, and the little buggers have chewed up the wiring. I will try and bodge up the wiring tomorrow and check to se if I ca get some spark. I will also lift the cylinder and check the crank, and them see if I can get it to run.

I had a phone call yesterday from a mate asking if I wanted a road bike. My reply was of cause, my adopting homeless bikes program is still running & can't see it closing soon lol So today I picked up a 1983 Honda VF400 for free. So it's not a tip find as I got in before the tip lol Don't really know to much about this model but it seems all there. Jimson

It Runs!
I had a bit of spare time today, so I had a bit of a play with my new toy.
I lifter the cylinder and found that the rings were gummed up, but they free up easily, and the crank looked ok, so I squirted some oil into the main bearing oil holes, and onto the big end and put the engine back together. I gave it a kick and compression felt good, well for a 100cc 2 stoke, it definitely is easier to kick than my normal 500 Yamaha single. Alas there was no spark. I ended up having to drop the engine out of the frame to clean out the mouse nest from inside the frame and pull out the chewed up remains of the wiring loom. A quick bit of wiring and I had spark. With a bit 0f 50:1 mix in the tank, courtesy of my brush cutter, it was making all the right noises and trying to start, but wouldn't quite catch. Then I noticed that there was no signs of anything coming out of the muffler. A quick check revealed that the baffle was totally clogged, surprising in itself that a 40 year old 2 stroke still had it baffle fitted. Anyway with the baffle out is started after a few kicks and promptly filled my shed with blue smoke haze. Ah, the joys of 2 strokes.

I have a sneaky suspicion, that this little Yamaha is going to jump the restoration cue and become the next project on to the bench, well truth be know, it is already on the bench, but I need to finish the SL125 Honda first. So once the little Honda is done, this will be back onto the bench for a good clean and fettle.
I don't intend doing a full on restoration, just throw in a new wiring loom and piston /and rings, replace the seat and polish it as best as I can.
