I thought 125 KTM by the front number plate??
I think you're right after having a 2nd look at the forks and engine case.
-
Thats it Tony, Geoffs Bike was a YZ125H with an IT125 tank and plastic. The first time I saw it was at a motorcycle show that our club put on at the Nambour civic hall. I thought why don't Yamaha just make that there next IT. How Naive.
Whats amazing is that from those photos I can count 5 or 6 people that will be at CD
-
Good photos. Looks like your dads handy work.
Is that bubble on the right ?
-
Yeah, Dad's work, but not Bubble on the right. Can't remember that guys name, but he was (I htink) English, and a member of the RTCB too. I think he had an IT175...

I'd forgotten all about it until you mentioned it! I wanted a bike like that! That's why I had a YZ125J the next year.
Funny though, I remember the next year, towards the end of one of the rounds of the 6 Day Series, Terry Taylor and I swapped bikes for the last section. Mine was a YZ125J and his was a YZ125H (without the IT125 bits). He wanted to see how much better the '82 model was, and I'd never ridden a 'H'.
Let's just say that my lust after Geoff Petlers old bike was severely cooled after that...... :'(
-
I had both the H and the J. I rember the H I had was a tall peaky SOB and the J had a great motor but overweght. In the Ponys I used to ride with Rick Madden and we always used his RM Now that was a bike :o
-
Yeah, I remember wondering how Terry rode that bloody H... It was tall, top heavy (even compared to the J), super peaky, and rock hard suspension..

1982 Yamaha QLD Six Day Series - Dalby
(http://i374.photobucket.com/albums/oo184/IT400C/Dalby%2082/Dalby-2.jpg)
My YZ125J after the rear tyre exploded on one of the top gear road sections.... One too many punctures, one too few tubes..
Luckily it was in the last transport section of the day - finished on the rim, only to find they had an acceleration and braking test back at the Kogan Hall. Snuck past and borrowed Terry's rear wheel out of his H - he wasn't too impressed that I ended up beating him... ::)
-
And the J when it was new...
(http://i374.photobucket.com/albums/oo184/IT400C/YZ125J/YZ125JBattery.jpg)Yamaha Japan sent a few engineers out to Oz to test some bikes, and we had them over for dinner one night. He took a copy of this photo back to Japan with him, and the next year that's where the IT175K had it's battery too... My own piece of Yamaha History! 8)

YZ125K at a round of the 6 Day Series in 1983 - can't remember which round though.
Unloaded the bike only to discover a flat front tyre - look close and you'll see a tube, time card and goggles in my hands - only just made the start. I think from memory Dad met me 100m down the road with my bumbag. He repacked it after I changed the tyre.

:o It's a good thing you got a pixie otherwise I would never have believed the description ::) :D
-
Yeah, My Dad was out photographing the event, and came across the tyre and rim lines. As he was talking the photo he was thinking "What sort of idiot would do that!" Then he got back to the impound and found out..... ::)
When the tyre let go it was a hell of a shock. Especially since one half was still attached to the rim by the rim locks, and the other half was slapping the underside of the rear guard every wheel rotation..... ;D
-
FANTASTIC photos!
Unreal stuff. Good on you. Very lucky to have such a quality photographer following you. Beautiful pix

They did a roaring trade on Bell Moto III's back then! do they ever come up for sale on Ebay?

Hard to jump start a LeMans start and not be noticed..... ;D

Yer my first enduro . Check the road bike gloves. Allthough I am not the only one wearing them.
The bike is a KTM 125 LC 1981 mod I think. Bought it off the guy on the other one.
Had radiator under a very small tank so I knocked that tank up. Did the trick.
Never had a problem in 2 seasons.

Yep jump start I was watchin.
Check the KTM .Got the proper tank back on it and a headlight. Ian Denton is pilot, me second lap. That bike by now has now done a lot of pony expresses and Yamaha 6 dayers and still on first piston.
Mike
Not a holeshot not a jump start. If you look at the other side of the tree you,ll see Stephen Grant on his way to another win.Mike ;)

Great Tony
Thats me on the RM125. I rode with Ricky Madden on the one bike, For the Ponys I left my YZJ at home.
Cheers

Yeah, I teamed up with Terry Taylor on the one bike too. Mine. From memory this was the last round of the series, and he'd already sold his YZ125H, so he had no bike. We were pretty good mates, and because I teamed up with him on my bike, he got enough points to beat me out of third in the series.... :'(
;D

Didn't realise that was you Mike, I was looking for the alloy tank.. And I knew that wasn't you getting onto that KTM either.... ::)

I remember Stephen Grant (I think) running a big wheel RM80 at one of the Enduro rounds in '83... Boiled it dry in the first section..

Ian Denton always first lap. Syko all elbows and teeth[ About 50 years old there ]. I was more gentle. Always put the plastic on for ponys. Came 5th there with a lap missing from scorecard. NOT impressed. Both always on same bike. Denton had a YZ 465 or something like that .Always trying to get me to share it in the ponys .Not for me.

Steve rode that 80 a lot in the late 83 season and early 84. Scarey fast. Won one enduro outrite. Was Kyogle I think. Passed my on flat out fire trail . Couldn,t believe it, me on ktm. A few of us raced them just before the ban on illegal reg mx bikes. Good in the tight stuff. I raced at Kogan on one in 84. Got a place if I remember correctly. Was 3 of us in that race on 80,s. Did u ever see the video of the 83 Woodford round?
-
I didn't even know there was a video of Woodford 83!!! Damn - do you know if anyone still has it??????????????

Was shown at RTCB club meet I think. I had a starring role. That log in the creek that stopped everyone. I was getting gassed so I [ Oh Dear] rode over the guy that was the problem. Could not believe that anyone could get stuck there.Went on to the best result. Even beat you for a change.I think that was the one where I had the prob with your dad. Started 1B next to S Grant, followed him, very educational. Must have caught up to your dad.
-
Recently bought some old bike mags and there was the picture of your bike with no back tire. It was an issue of Australian motorcycle news and said something about you should get the hard luck award!
-
haha - I don't remember that being in AMCN! Excellent! Mind you, it helps when your Dad works for the magazine.... ::)
Which AMCN was it? I'll have to see if I can find a copy.
Actually, that first photo I posted (Canungra 81), a photo of me on th IT125 was in AMCN or Revs too.

Yeah, 1983 was my worst year.... I was riding much faster than 1982, and the YZ125K was a much better bike than the YZ125J, but it was MUCH more brittle.... I only finished 2 of the 5 rounds of the 6 Day series that year. Gold (2nd) at Round 2 (DMCC - was that Dalby?), and a chocky Biscuit (bronze) at Woodford.... Worked the RTCB round I think. Somehow that was still enough to get me 3rd in the series... ::)

Just found the trophy for this event - Western Underwriters 6 Hour Pony Express, 1983 - 3rd in the 250 Class...
-
That movie might have been shown at Southside Mcc . I remember someone chipping me about it.
U GOT THIRD :o . I worked one , raced 5, finished 4 ( although went very slow in last round cause I had added the points up wrong and didn,t think I had a chance :'() and got 2nd in series , (missed winnin it by 5 or 10 points). I houred out by 5 mins in that last round and still got a place and trophy. Was only 125 clubman left . My clubmembers were spewin at me said I should hang my head . HA HA ;D.
Hey where was that Silverdale round I don,t recall it.
-
From memory the Silverdale round was up the back of the Aratula pub. Down to Aratula, turn right at the pub, and go in a long way....
-
Yep I remember . Me DNF
-
can't remember which year, but either 82 or 83 at Silverdale was EXTREMELY wet.... Rained the whole day... :D
-
Tried new carb on ktm . Pop
-
1983 was the last year I competed seriously... Spat the dummy at the end of 83 after a year of mechanical DNF's. Think I rode one round at the start of 84, but the heart wasn't in it.
At the start of 1983, a little birdy whispered in my ear that Honda would be watching me, and if I had a good year, I'd be on a free Honda and parts for 1984... Then had a year full of mechanical failures and breakages with only one good result for the year.... So I missed out on a full sponsorship at the same time as I discovered girls and alcohol..
You can guess the rest... ::)
If I hadn't known about the Honda thing I probably wouldn't have been so disappointed. Maybe would have kept going at it... who knows... :'(

Bit of pressure on a young fella. You got 2 third silvers in 83. Not as bad as what you think. Where did you end up in 82? second? In 83 I was ACU delegate, club sec and treasurer and was told by my club to vote for the end of illegally reg bikes. Unfortunately that,s all I had and I was doing a lot of work with the club . Sometimes it appeared as if I was on my own. Pretty well did the Blackbutt enduro on my own so I finished up and went farming. :( Probably took it all too serious.
-
Hey did you do Blackbutt. What a hoot . I had the RM 80 and set the special test to suit. Cruel. Fastest test was Armstrong at 52secs. ( Having a break from MX) We talked Gavin McLeod into having a go on my 80. He had no gear ( working) so was wearing loafers. Did it in 49 secs. Was wrecked when he finished. All shaky. Gav went on to win 85 Aust titles ( 250 class ) on a XR 200. Mad.
-
How do you guys remember this stuff. I moved to riding a CR125 in 83. Was Blackbutt a round of the 6 one day series?

Yeah, second in 82 (3rd in 81 and 83)..... 82 was Bronze, Bronze (3rd in class), Bronze, Silver (3rd in class) and Gold (1st in class).
Not sure I ever rode Blackbutt. Always wanted to though. Hmmmm, so I can blame you for ending MX'ers in Enduros hey? ::) :'( ;D

Mike's cheating - he's still got the results sheets!!! ;D
-
Hey Noel, do you remember Warren MacFarlane? Used to ride a KX125 in enduros in 82/83.. I ran in to hime the other day, he's coming to CD7 and bring his SWM125 and 175.. :D
-
he's coming to CD7 and bring his SWM125 and 175.
COOL. More Class 8)
That reminds me to get on to a few guys from back in the day, one still has his SWM.
Do you have a contact for Warren?
-
I've got his mobile somewhere - I'll dig it out and PM you tomorrow...
-
That reminds me to get on to a few guys from back in the day, one still has his SWM.
If you ever hear of a good SWM on the market, let me know - I wouldn't mind getting one one day... Not sure I could convince the missus to let me, but can't hurt to try... ::)

Me 3rd in 82.
Yep blame me . Not like a politician did what the club told me to :o . Blackbutt Rnd 1 1984.
Gunna start posting some of these results.
-
Oh well, if Blackbutt was the first round in '84, then I did ride it. I only rode the first round in '84. Had spent the off season drunk and in bed with my girlfriend - so was getting plenty of exercise, just the wrong kind for racing dirt bikes... :o
Hadn't even upgraded my bike. Turned up on my YZ125K, no training, little practice, and of course did poorly. Decided the girlfriend was more fun than enduros that day... ::)
-
Yep blame me . Not like a politician did what the club told me to :o .
I don't blame you at all Mike - it was just a throw away comment. ;D
It had gone overboard a bit, but I also think it was the wrong decision.
As long as the bikes rego matched the engine numbers etc, the ACU had no right to refuse entry. Whether or not the registration of the vehile was legal or not was not theirs to decide. My bikes had rego papers that showed that the bike was legally registered. Sure, knock back anyone who has taken the plates off another bike, but that's all they had the right to do.......
-
My club told me to vote that way so I did. Ended my racing. Not Pissed at anyone thats just the way it was. Man I was riding a registered Rm80 big wheel. Bit obvious. All my bikes were mx,s. Check my results post.
-
sucked, didn't it..... :(
-
Yep. Laceys Ck results up in 5 mins
-
where are you posting the results?
-
Right there. Below this page
-
More photos Tony please :(
-
Hi Mike, I'll see what I can dig up, but I don't have too many more - Dad didn't keep his negatives for too long, as he ran out of storage space he got rid of the older ones.... :'(
I'd kill to have all those old negatives now................
BTW, I haven't kept in contact with any of the old Southside guys.... Sorry.
Any luck with the Movie?
-
Na. Got a heap of results n photos coming. :)
Or so they say :-\
Don,t hold breath. :(
-
Gday Mike & 400,
What a good read going through all those names wow how the memories of those days are still great the bikes with all that travel and the cool clothing that you could read, I rode a few enduro's back then got a medal in 1981 at a round of the six day series in 250 clubman class it was a TMCC event and rode another at dalby but crashed and dnf'd which put me out for a while. I think my first ACU event was at peachester I rode a 125 Husky it was a great event i thought i was lost hadn't seen anyone for a while then this IT125 flew past me i couldn't get over how clean the rider was it looked like he had missed all that mud but i found out later it was Peter Payne alias Mr clean, i had a great battle with a guy from Gathorne Husqvarna, those events were so well organized i was just a young fella with an old ute and a bike but everyone was helpful and made you feel welcome.
Husky AU
-
Hi Husky.
Good times hey. Just shows how old we are. :)
That Peachester one wasn,t a pony express was it? Easy to remember because of the mud.
Had a XR500 stuck in it with just the back of the seat showing. thats how u knew it was a XR. Ha :) Ha :)
Or was it the one where you had to ride over that strainer post. :o
Great view of the glasshouse Mts from that strainer.
Have you checked the results yet?
Did you get a mention in them? :)
Keep in touch.
That Gaythorn guy was he on a 125? [ John Hansen ] or a 250 [ Gary Woodgate]
-
Tony see that little u/tube thingy on the bottom of my letter here.
Thats Gary Woodgate at Mt Mee.
Easy hill hey. :)
There,s a lot of guys further down [ at the bottom ,out of shot] having a bit of a problem with their new bikes. ::)
Gary was in Northern Districts MTC and was one of the fastest clubmen you ever saw.
He and Gavin were insane fast.
Check the 82 results.
Ended up busting his arm real bad and gave up riding.
He,s back , and almost as fast. :)
-
Dad found some slides from the Final Motocross (Conondale) at the Four Day (84?)..
I'll try and post them when I get some decent scans - not easy off slides....
-
I,me close to getting a heap more stuff, next week I hope.
Too much to email I,me told. :)
-
;D :o ;D :o ;D ;D
-
Hi Husky.
That Gaythorn guy was he on a 125? [ John Hansen ] or a 250 [ Gary Woodgate]
Gday again,
Sorry about the slow reply! ::) Yeah the peachester ride was a solo event dont know who the guy was he had the Gaythorne jerrsey on and he new what he was doing i was on a 79 wr 125 husky i traded my IT 175 on it i still have the receipt from Paul Rooney Motorcycles it was the first husky i bought Paul Rooney showed me a flyer on ACU events and helped me get the license done and said that the peachester ride would be a great event and he was right it had everything mud long straights and hills i had a great time and was hooked on the ACU events i used to try and save enough money to travel to them but they were always a hike i remember one at buladeela it was the first time i saw Hans Applegren he had a bumbag with a green apple symbol on it.
Thanks Husky AU :D
-
I should have time to scan those Conondale 4 Day slides this weekend.... ;D
-
I have the 250 results for that , am going to post them later.
Worked a checkpoint .
Best bike I saw?
Husky Auto. UNreal traction. :)
