Title: XL 500

I have got a XL500 and are going to modify it for VMX.

I have started stripping the big girl down, removing lights, switchs etc. and i have come across the battery?

As I don't have a manual, can anyone please tell me what the battery powers? Is it essential or there for cosmetic reasons. In a nut shell if removed will the bike still run?

XL500 are CDI I am pretty sure so battery is not needed. Is it an '80-'82 model?
