Some may have noticed that Firko and I are up for replacement knees. This has come as shock to the system as it was discovered while I was having a clean up for a torn cartlige. I have been trying to get my head around the fact that my brief return to the fray may be over before it started. Does anybody out there race with a replacement knee of other prosthesis? Cheers Jerry PS Ji do you know by any chance what material they are made of?

One day a Rooster, next day a feather duster hey Jerry::)
I know a bloke up north, that has the low down on Titanium replacements.
-
Good luck Jerry, maybe Ji can fab one for you and also do the insertion.

Dont know about the rooster bit but I do feel I've lost my way a bit. Jerry

Klub Kevlar "good 'ol boy" Edgar Phipps is still racing with two replacements hips and a replacement knee. He's still damn fast too.
I've known about my knee for a while but have been putting it off and putting it off until the pain finally beat me. I'm also down for an ankle fusion which will permanently lock the ankle into a fixed position. I've been holding off until my specialists partner comes back from the USA in September. Apparently she's pioneering ankle replacement surgery over there and my specialist would like her to examine my ankle before we commit to the fusion. whichever way we go, it's got to be an improvement over the shit I'm putting up with at present. It's really depressing me not being able to walk any distance or even ride my mountain bike down the street for a latte'.

well that's about as much fun as getting only one walk sock for your birthay Firko. Maybe it's time to go fishing? I used to have a commercial liscence. I still have your Sydney Gregorys waterways atlas here somewhere, allthough I just looked for it without success. I have a feeling it maybe sliding into the abiss ::)

Hey Firko
Can you tell me why they are looking to ,fuse the ankle. I get huge bouts of gout in my right ankle (put it ino the back wheel when exciting off the back of a speedway solo, so it has heapsof hardware in there) They are talking about fusing mine also so but afte having the last 4 discs fused I'm not too keen as I'm still in heaps of pain there although the doc reckons it should be fixed.

I feel your pain Rosco, it always makes me cringe when I think of someone going under the knife and I certainly wish Jerry a speedy recovery.
I also carry internal hardware courtesy of a Speedway bike and was offered a Shoulder Fusion about 10 years ago, but as that would mean the end of doing anything even slightly exciting, inc - earning a crust in my trade, I've put it off.
Living with chronic pain does get tough and the day will definitely come when I have no choice, but not just yet.
I've got a comeback to make. Silly old fart.

Ross....In 1982 I was trail riding on my 490 Maico when the front wheel threw up a tree branch which impaled my right ankle, went in through the boot and out the back. They got me to hospital with the tree branch still in there and removed it and screwed and pinned the mess back together. 3 weeks in hospital, two operations and 3 months off work later all was well for the next twenty years including resuming my precious rugby......but there's a clincher. A year after the last operation I was supposed to go back into hospital to have the pins and screws removed but because I had become so far behind financially by then and being in a new job, I couldn't afford the time off work to have the op. I never did and to my detriment the pins and nine screws have become so calcified over the years to the point that you can hardly see the pins on an X-Ray and the calcium buildup has basically locked the ankle joint up. It's a horrible mess, my specialist reckons it's one of the five worst ankles he's seen on someone still walking. The pressure on the joint has me in pain 24/7 and on mega dose Tramadol pain killers which aren't good for the soul let me tell ya! The ankles pretty well locked up anyway so hopefully the fusion will end the pain and I'll be able to resume fairly normal activity.

Sounds like no option Mark. All the best mate.

Accidents will happen when you're out trail riding on a girly bike ;)

Tramadol Firko gees ... Was prescribed them about three years ago ,took the two or six... tablets as required and spent the next few hours laughing insanely but oh so joyfully at the multi coloured pictures dancing on the walls... (so I am told by the interfering house management .aka .wife and daughter..). Bloody doctors took them and said they are a no no for me now... >:(
Where is that piccie of Tony T going over the handlebars of a mighty KX500 at warp speed when you need it :o

Firko
Understand where you are coming from I tend to live on a staple diet of diclofenac, I wonder if I'll have any stomach lining in years to come. My ankle not to your point yet but then I am just a youngster (damn those next 7 years could be interseting). What ever you do I hope it goes well. Have finished off the godden frame and onto the gearbox and wheels now. Not setting the aim too high but I would like an outing at the DT Nats as my first ride back. Hope to be the one easily identifiable, as the sweep rider at the tail of the field.Maybe we just need to employ our own VMX doctor like the GP circuit.

I had bi-lateral knee replacements done on both knees about 6 years ago, best thing I ever had after 21 previous knee operations to trim remove meniscus & pieces on broken knee joint.
Bi-lateral replacement is the replacement of the outside half of the knee joint; this is the faster wearing part of the joint, having this type of op first for an active motorcycle racer is a good idea as it it leaves a full knee replacement for when that finally fails.
I have been active practising at Frankston MX track on a CR125 & CCM400 and racing my GSXR1000 since having then done and they are still great.
I mainly got it done so I could ben my knees further with high mount pegs on my roadrace bike. A couple of years ago I crashed at Phillip Island and broke my left Tibia and ripped off my fibula but the knee joint is still going strong.
I don't like to tell people about my surgeon as it increases the waiting list when I want to see him lol. It is David Young at Melbourne Orthopedic Group.

I think we need a new class for all us old farts with varying degrees of serous injury - then I would be happy!!!

Demiture ........Ross dons'nt count :-*
-
I think Freaky means Dementia.
First sign of Dementia, your spelling goes.
That's 2 for the Dementia class, only need 4 more for a title event.
-
Yeah but how long have you got to run it, laptimes could be in the realms of days with them forgetting where the track is :D
-
Dunno about fusing your ankle, sounds a bit like welding a sprocket on.
We can compensate for all sorts of injuries but constant pain is a hard one to deal with.
Even so I would be looking for a second opinion on the ankle, there may be someone out there that can rebuild it. Have you got private cover?
My mother had both knee joints replaced in the late 70’s because of arthritis.
They told her at the time the joints were only good for 7 years and they would have to be redone, no doubt they would have improved since then.
At the time they didn’t come with knee caps so she could never kneel down again. Would today’s joints be any different?
It was in the early nineties (with the original joints still in and working fine) when she had a fall and developed an infection in one knee. She was in hospital for some time, we thought we were going to lose her she was so bad with the infection. The problem was that the infection was in the false joint and as there was no blood flow into the false joint none of the antibiotics they were pumping her with could reach the infection to work. Eventually they had to remove both knee joints for a couple of weeks so they could get rid of the infection and then fit her with new knee joints again.
-
They're exactly the reasons why I didn't consider a shoulder joint replacement nearly 10 years ago. No1 they had a limited lifespan and I was still too active, No2 they hadn't, and still haven't perfected them. Hip's & knees can function pretty good swinging through the one plane but shoulders are pretty much like a uni - joint.
Pain management is a constant battle and does wear extremely thin at times.
If I eventually qualify for the Dememtia class at least I may forget about the pain of the past.
-
For rosco who's having trouble with Gout. Gout is caused by a build up of acid in the body. Usually as a result of consuming an excess of acidic foods. Like booze, coffee, tea, sugar etc.. You can get rid of gout by removing or limiting the intake of acidic food and eating more alkaline foods.

Do a Google search if you need to know more.

I've had about four different surgeons check the ankle out and they all give the same prognosis.....it's rooted and the only "cure" is to fuse it. It's not that much of a jump from where it's at now, I have about 25mm of total movement at best, none at the worst, the difference being that the pain will hopefully end once it's fused. The one option yet to try is the ankle replacement specialist who's coming back from America in August/September. She's supposedly a world leader in such surgery and my specialist is her practice partner and he wants her to look it over before any final decisions are made. Meanwhile I have yet another surgeon checking it out on the 6th. All I know is that I'm pretty damn sick of limping around and of the pain and that being dependant on pain killers 24/7 is getting me down big time. I just want it all to go away. :'(

Crash n Bern
Lived with gout for 12 years now and tried about everything. Mine is triggered by dehydration so it is easy to draw the parallel to alcohol and some trigger foods. While it is excess acid build up it is also related to arthritis and like most things weight and exercise. Used pro-gout for 5 years and suffered the onset of a cateract which is one of the known side effects. Not willing to risk the other eye as while atifical lenses ae good they are not like the real thing. Losing weight and doing more exercise sounds easy but if you are in constant pain it is very difficult to acieve. Hard to explain gout to someonewho hasn't had it. Have been is such chronic pain that at times I have thought amputation may be an answer, but after a week things settle for a little while. I have a degee in Sport Science and so I understand all the correct principles for living a good life but obviosly can blame my ancestors for the lower self control gene. Then again if I had that I wouldn't have ridden motorcycles (ever talked to medical practitioners about this type of recreation?)

Tuffin up Firko not long to CD and i will mix a brew in the blenda to replace the tramadol. Yep old age and bikes catch up with you, have my wrist fused, just hang on and enjoy while you can

that link was a good read crash n burn, what i thought was a healthy diet needs a rethink and reprograming the brain to get the right foods at the super market, maybe there is something in the link for all of us
-
I think we may be all missing the point. We partake in motorised sport, no?
Nobody said you have to push the bike, or run behind it. Only poor people walk, and lets face it - disturbed people jog.
I think you'll all be fine.
-
Fair point Rude man however some people with rooted knees ride Bultaco's and their a bastard to kick with that high mounted pivot point. Please feel free to reply with the obvious.............. Jerry
-
Pay someone. Preferably in single malt whisky and I'll be your start bitch.
Or you could get serious and build an all in one bike stand rear wheel roller / starter powered by a 400 Buick motor and charge all the oldies with Bulta-cos $5 to start 'em.
I reckon your return on inverstment is one two day MX meeting with three Bullys present (not including yours) they way they start.
God didn't give us knees to be brought to them. Walk on Jerr mo-fo (notice the whisky reference). We dont stop riding cause we get older, we get older cause we stop ridding.
Look at it this way, it gives you a great excuse to develop a pain killer addiction.
Warmest regards and affection,
ER

Yeah Matt it's food for thought. If I said that I was running my bike on Elf mixed 50/50 with kero and a dash of diesel and putting the Black and Gold oil after it had done 20,000k's in the car into the bike and then wondered why it wasn't running so good. I would get some pretty interesting response.
But do the equivilent to your body, and it just seems par for the course. I have watched people eat themselves sick and to an early grave. Pretty guilty of eating bad myself.

I've had a bit of a win as far as my ankle goes. I had a meeting today with an American ankle specialist, Dr Todd Gothelf who has booked me in for exploratory surgery to check out the feasability of an ankle replacement on July 2. He seems to think that the best option is still a total antithoscopic fusion because of my age and high degree of arthritis in the joint but he's exploring all possibilities before we make the final decision. Seeing that I only have 20mm of total movement now, to total lock up won't change my life that much. The only problem is that because I can't straighten my foot out, I'll have a tough time trying to get my motocross boot on and off. It took three people and a lot of swearing and yelps at the HBBB. ;D That's a minor thing though. Getting rid of the pain and off the narcotics is the main aim. 8)

whats the results on your back if its in full lock ?
cheers A

I'm sure there'd be someone out there who could alter a boot for you Firko. Never say Die. Good luck.
