Yeah, some very nice photos there. Looks like a great meeting and a very nice track. The track is very similar to one we used to have over here on the South Coast - Coopers Gully. Love that sort of thing - nice natural surface, elevation changes, some great switchbacks. Beeyootiful.

nice pic's. wish we had tracks like that in SA!!!!!
-
I can see why the chopper is at the bottom of the hill - some serious elevation change there!
-
nice pic's. wish we had tracks like that in SA!!!!!
yep i cant understand why more racers arent on scramble tracks. Its the only way to be pre 75 freindly in any weather.
Pete check your PM ol son.
-
Looks like a sister track to Fairleigh Castle :P very nice thanks DJ
Hope they got lots of entries!
-
You can not beat natural terrain tracks , Brilliant love to have the opportunity to ride that scramble track ( man made tracks suck.
-
Over 130 riders to this meeting with over 200 bikes entered into classes. WOW!!! what a day!!!
PS.... helicopter wasn't required ( thank goodness )
-
The track looks fantastic where in NZ is it?
-
The Track was just a couple of K's north of Levin in the north Island. This track was used in the '70s and '80s and brought to life again by the local vmx guys, (it has alot of history). The whole communitity got behind it and the event ran like clockwork.
-
Thats not a great track, thats a bloody fantastic track.
DJR your shots are first class. Thanks for posting them (and so soon after the meeting)
Can you put some names to the bikes?
The mugen mounted 480 #1 looks like he has some real speed happening ;)
Shane
-
The 480 #1 is Murray Anderson
RM400 #3 is Mike Marshal
YZ465 #16 is Mark Fergusson
RM370 #813 is Warren Summers
CR360 #84 is Luke Berkhart
YZ490 #159 is Sam Combes
-
Faarrk DJ, put me and the bike slut down for next year, he'll be drooling at that big CR!!. Might have to bring a bunch of guy's eh?.... I'm sure Shane could get a note from his mum. As you know there is a flock of us that want to have ago/another go over there. Did the pom pull a hammy (told me the other day he was gonna sook out). Awesome photos DJ.....I take it you didnt ride?. Is the new shed all done now... how many sheep does it hold? Cheers John.
-
I have to agree with DJ on how the meeting went, looked very well organised from the non riders viewpoint.
If you think the #1 mugen was flying then you would have loved the #84, have a look how far down the hill he was jumping. Helps that he's only 27 & NZ125 champion less than 10years ago. 1 race it was like he was out trailriding by himself with the actual race going on the full length of the top straight behind him
-
Give the boys the approax age of the fast guys DJ.... Murray Anderson would be 50 something, flies like a bird!!
-
WOW :o That is just the best track I have ever seen.
Note to self. Hurry up and win lotto so I can go over more often. I feel like I really missed out there.
Murray Anderson is a previous NZ champ (#1 on the cr480 with a Mugen kit on her).
I see the hunchback of Notre-dame was there ( I am not an animal, just a pommy that thinks he's a kiwi)
-
Thanks for the info DJ, Great to see the boy's enjoying themselves.
I have said it before the tracks you blokes have over there is second to none and the bikes all look first class.
Now if we could get the two govenments to build a bridge we would all be set ;D
keep the photo's coming boys, the shots are first class and the next best thing to being there.
Shane

Gday Men,
We just just got back from the Johnny Old race,my brother Scunge came over from Melbourne, and our Father came up from Chch and was the team mechanic and barman.Huge thanks to Mark "Woody' Wooding for loaning Scott his bike -thanks heaps mate!!!Unfortunately Scunge beat me in the family grudge race 2-1 but we had a blast!
What a track, motocross exactly like it was back in the day.The organisation was the best I have encountered here and over the ditch.
Big thanks to Captain Kirk, Mrs Captain, Terry and all the team.
You Ockers missed an awesome day.
Cheers
Craig

Thanks for all the brilliant piccies DJ. I'll echo what everyone else has said - that's a fantastic track, and the bikes and riders look so good... You guys really have it mailed. I'm envious.
-
Great Pics Dj ( as usual) but how good is that track and the downhill jump ! i will get to ride Conondale this year but now i have to add that one to the "Must do" list
you blokes definably have the most desirable tracks over there,
-
VMX Valhalla or what! Really nice track and bikes....again.
Must be a nice feeling to have a serious chopper parked on the in-field.
-
Just looked at the photos again, I'm asking myself why I went to the Nats, would have been cheaper to fly over there and race. You boys where holding out on that one!. Hows ol Morley Shirrifs going these days?. How did big Les go?, not many sleeps to Conondale now, least I've got something to look forward to.
-
DJ - thanks for posting these pics mite put to bed in the South Island that twin shockers don't fly, proof is in the print, can't agree more about the organisation and running of this one, only a handful of you guy's can compare Jonny Olds to the Aussie CD meets, if this doesn't get close to the CD's then they must be pretty special n something worth traveling to, cheers MC
-
This is a birds eye view of the track taken by Jo Mrs Captain Kirk.
Start line over to the right of the picture it the end of the pits.
John, you know you would've been very welcome. This is the track you missed.
-
MC, the meeting in the weekend (Johnny Old) and CD's are two different things, so they should never be compared. Both are great and everyone needs to attend each meeting at least once. ;D

DJ Cd is the best NON competitive event iv'e been to and the Johnny Old just edges out the Connondale nats* as the best Competitive event iv'e been to :)
* Both fantastic tracks but the Johnny Old is much more laid back :)

Bill, your telling me that??
I do remember someone being very laid back at Conondale ;) ;D but yeah you have got it right about CD being the best NON competitive event you can go to, and I just hope I get to ride at the next Johnny Old.
-
Good to catch up with you Bill, hey I'm just like most petrol head VMXers, wasn't good enough to attract monetary attention when I was younger. Now I have the cash I'm tryin to cram as much in before I end up in a dribbling mess in an old folks home.
Thanks for the heads up - not trying to compare meets but tryin to get a handle on what we rode in on the weekend, looking to do an international road trip, some of the boys are looking at the states but I'm thinkin Aus for real VMX break, thats why I asked
Great pics and a great weekend n to any of you Aussie boys have a look at the rest of DJ's pics on Photo bucket -
Cheers MC
-
wow, what a track!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is this a once a year event?

Mark you cant beat the CD events for a great trip :) however Mid ohio and farleigh castle are on the todo list when the boat comes in ;D
-
wow, what a track!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is this a once a year event?
Dave the track reminded me of tracks back home a bit ( moreso than most tracks over here do ) do they still run events at ladies mile on the side of the A3 ?
-
I'll compare ....they are both GREEN and fantastic tracks.
Just looked at the photos again, I'm asking myself why I went to the Nats, would have been cheaper to fly over there and race. You boys where holding out on that one!. Col Metcher came to the Johnny Old along with our regular Aussie good Bastard Steve sweeny and forum member Scunge :) Its great you blokes made it over and you picked the Premier event to come to.
Allison would love to see you and Steve over here :) see you at CD ;) trying to put together a trip your way for the 15th anniversary , Col tells me hes coming back out west for it :) we better get Davey C on board for the trip , Brad to but i think he will be in Pomgolia then ;D
You went to the Nats to meet people like --ME-- ;) ;D and we'll meet you again at CD7 and again at Johny old in 2011 if the property owner allows.. Start savin DaveyC--just do it.

Bill
To have Conondale even rated with that track makes me proud. That track is awesome.
Will it be on the same W\end next year?
Cheers
Noel
-
still dirty you didnt pressure me into coming over >:(
John, how about coming over for the Woodstock Bourbon World Twinshock 125 Champs the weekend before CD7 and have a week off and fly back for CD and be the International star at Classic Dirt ;) ;D now I'm not trying to put pressure on you but imagine flying back to Oz as the World Twinshock 125 Champ?? ;D ;D
-
I really hope so :) Jo and Owen the organisers really did a fantastic job :) be really Cool if we can do it again next year ;D
-
No pressure at all ya mongrel!, I'll tell you one thing though after just looking at the areial shot, theres more spectators there than the Broadford nats.....and theres 6? million people that live in Melborne, sheds a diferent light on how slack the Vic's where a couple of weeks ago!!!! Whats NZed's total population.....4 million.....shame, shame, shame (I think that was said by an expat Kiwi too) anyway back too the positive side of things....much better than the sidecar crap isint it?.....
-
Rider # 147 on page 2 is Col "Supersenior50" Metcher from the Gold Coast. The old bugger turns up everywhere.
-
We might have to take you to Bindi's Mark to get some voodoo magic happening so we can get you back on a bike ya old codger, sail you across the seas for a ride!! ;D
-
If you can get me further up the waiting list to have my broken body parts fixed you've got a deal. I'll have a ride at CD7 and see how it goes. I enjoyed my few laps at the HBBB.
-
Those photos are great DJ.. The track looks awesome!
I'd love to come over and ride a track like that someday.
-
The rain came down the night of the Johnny Old and the clean up was as much fun as the racing the day before. Thats how steep the drop off was, just add water and you have a hydroslide.

I would have to say it would be one of the best events I have ever raced at 8) Jo & Owen are talking about the event being two years apart around the same time so start saving & if Steven wants to come I think I have a spare XL350 or two he could ride ;D
-
Jeez.... you didnt say it was at Dreamworld... I'd be in that mudslide, what else are you not telling us?...I bet there was free sheep.. wasn't there, bloody mongrels. :P

We gave one to every Auzzie there John, but the Taylor brothers wanted to share one so we still have one for you left over. :P ;D
-
The mud slide had a wee help from a garden hose from the trough on top of the hill. The speed these kids were traveling was unreal. Our boy had a ball. All OSH approved of course!
Looking at running event in two years if all go with land owner/leasee.
Maybe we should put entries online now for it?
Cheers for all the good comments, remember, an event is a TEAM effort and boy did we have the most incredible team you could ask for!!
-
Theres gonna be alot of bridge building here DJ.....and I thought we where mates!.....might have to send you back to Bindi's for the whole of CD7. Did the pom get a sheep?

This is along the top straight and when you have Murray Anderson on his CR480 Mugen and a very fast YZ490 owned by the Shirrif family riden by Sam Coombs you can have a guess how fast they were going.

If I've got to wait 2 years, that lamb will be mutton....christ I might not be able to get it up by then?
-
Now all the old memories are coming back....chasing sheep in the car, giving it a gentle nudge, throwing it in the boot and taking it home, dressing it up, arghhhh, wont be able to sleep tonight!

Its all good as long as you dont kiss them DJ!

Is that the best you can offer in the way of three wheelers?? Can't wait to get the chairs over there and a coupe of years is about the right time frame so let's see what we can do please.
Wally will pay for us all to go just so he can lead us down that great sky jump.
BTW Freaky, that avatar is fannytastic-pls pm me a copy.

Great photos of a fantastic event!
Big thanks to Woody for lending me a bike, those green machines really do have plenty of poke!
I met far too many great Kiwi VMXers to name them all, but well done Owen, Jo, Terry, etc for staging as well run event as you will see.
Thanks to my bro for letting me win the twin race off and finally to TM Bill for the tour of, some, of his VMX warehouse!
Makes me even prouder to be a kiwi!

Scott

Murray is real well, he's currently in the middle of new house build near Otaki so he has been living out of boxes for the passed 6 months or so, still plumbing.

I rode at this meeting & it was a credit to Jo , Owen & their band of helpers.A shining example of how to run a safe, efficient & enjoyable event at minimum cost, mutual benefit to the local community,& fantastic racing without "big brother".
More in VMX Mag soon.

Glad to see you enjoyed it Col, have to catch up at the next BMCC meet, did you pick up any of the local lingo?.
