Post by: chopa 071 on April 24, 2010, 08:19:14 pm
Hi Guys, Does anyone know the bearing # for the tapered roller bearing that replaces the original top headset bearing on a Rm 500 E.

Thanks Chopa

If the  head set nut won't start on thread, you need to find someone with a lathe ......

Top shaft is Std with black marker showing how much needs to be turned down.
Botton shaft is turned down .....showing difference .   I ended up with 50mm total from top of shaft to shoulder.

Sorry to drag up an old thread.
Has anybody done a tapered bearing swap on a RM465X? On the X-reference programme I have, it shows the 465X having an individual stem, nothing else corresponds, so i'm assuming its different to the 500. Is it necessary to machine down the stem to fit the top bearing? I have it pulled apart ready for painting, so cant assemble to check right now. I have pressed the stem out of the bottom clamp so I can get the clamps powdercoated, and I can whack the stem in the lathe and machine it down whilst it's apart, just need to confirm that I will need to do it to fit a tapered roller bearing.
Thanks for any help.

Cheers
Adam

Yep, you will need to drop the shoulder like Oldfart said. It will be about 5-7mm to make room for the change from ball & race to tapered bearings.
