Got the latest CDB and Maico only are making new 250's and 490's from the ground up. The way I read it , not from nos but new parts that are made.
The fins have been made differently and they have the '83 style bottom end. Would this be legal here?
I took a picture but village photos isn't playing ball.I will try again after dinner.

They are using an '83 motor on some of their Maico's..
They make brand new '81 models using a newly manufactured frame and new old stock parts. You can buy the new frames for 495 pounds.

I think you have answer that in your subject title ;D a lot depends on what year date they stamp frame and engine # ;) having said that this opens up a new can of worms.

It goes against the grain for me a bit. So its an '83 bottom end but seems everything else is manufactured. Even the forks? Top end is different. Triples are after market etc.

from what I can read .
To do this they have taken new parts from original maico sources and reproduced a new engine combining the charactistics of two different models to make a really special power unit.

i just bought some wheels from them ,there doing the 83 or 81/82 engines in to a 81 type round back twin shock frame

Why not? We can use replica Metisse and Cheneys and GMC replica CZs and HLs so why not a replica '81 Maico? I have my doubts about the twin shock gear drive Maico frame though.

I don't think you'd be able to use anything from a single shock bike legally.

Apart from the question of class compliance.........
I'm surprised the new frames do not appear to have had any gussets added near the rear shock mounts which is the Archiles heel of the original Mega and 'round-back' frame? Maybe the materials used are better etc

Dave....The material in early Maico frames was pretty good, a fairly close facimile of Chro-Mo but the later frames don't use nearly as quality material IMHO. I can't pull a Lozza and get all scientific here, I'm only going by their 'weldability' and ability to be straightened after being tweaked in an accident. The new repro frames are probably made from 4130 Chro-Mo or Reynolds tubing so you'd expect them to be better than the 'mass produced for a price' originals.
I noticed the lack of any extra strengthening in known trouble spots myself so that's another clue towards better materials being used. Plus....the frames would have to be exact replicas to be deemed legal so any updates might be seen to be un kosher. I can't beleive how cheap these frames are :o.

18.7.12 Evolution Class- Eligibility
18.7.12.1 Bikes will be OEM.
18.7.12.2 Modifications converting later equipment
to comply will not be allowed
18.7.12.3 All components will be of the period the
machine was manufactured.
a) No linkage suspension,
b) No Disc brakes,
c) Air cooled motors.
18.7.13 Evolution Class- Classes
a) Solo 125cc,
b) Solo 250cc,
c) Solo 263cc and over.
you can buy a brand new pre 62 manx norton and race it in national champ even with 5 speed box so why could you not ride in evo or at least pre85

An '83 bottom end would kill it for evo. Pre '85. Throw an '81 motor in and all is good.
