How good is this for a 16 year old?.......It's fantastic Michael. That TM400 you'll eventually get will be going to a good home if this is any indication of your talents. Keep up the good work. PM sent.
-
Thanks Firko, great to get compliments from guys that I know have been there and done this sort of build before.
It is still a little ways off done but getting there every day it is sometimes hard to believe it is the same bike I rode when I was little but I know all the original bits on it from handle bars to footpegs I know all the bits thanks alot Michael. :)
-
That looks brilliant Michael! Keep the progress pics coming.
One of the first bikes I ever rode was one of these and an old dual range ag bike.....owned by a mate or a mate at the time, used to ride them around the grounds of Avoca Beach Rest Home of all places!!!
-
Thanks Mx will do found out some more info on gt80's during the build the swingarm changed my 76 parts bike swingarm/brake stay was different would fit fine but different also the washers behind the shocks the parts book only shows one but infact there were more thats why that little level is there they clear everything fine but top had two behind the shock and bottom only one to keep the shocks inline I could actually notice the funny angle of them I am good at picking levels and I am sure shocks should sit straight not out to the sides.
The bike has forced me to be a bit picky have a few spares about that were just not good enough so need to get rid of alot of stuff after I finish the build also see my little orange book have to thank tmbill for that one has exploded diagrams perfect to tell what bolts are needed how many washes etc etc and how it goes together thanks alot Michael. :)
-
Often you will find rear shocks on bikes will lean inwards at the top. Take a look at a husky from the 80's. Also my TS 250 left side shock leans in at the top and its ment to. Its out wider at the bottom for chain clearance and leans in at the top. If it was out wider at the top that would have ment the rails that the seat sits on would have to be wider which would mean the seat would have to be wide to reach the seat lock so thats why they designed it so the shock leaned in at the top. If you go heim bearings its ok but if its only rubber bushes they can wear out quickly. Im not saying you are wrong with adding the extra washer though ;)
-
Clearance isn't a problem on these nothing to hit also the amount of thread was an indicator before the dome nuts went on I couldn't remember how many washers where on there I stripped the bike probably two years ago ::) it was easy to take apart proofing a bit more difficult to put back together the 76 had two washers top and bottom but it also had a different swingarm.
You can actually see the other swingarm in the picture it is hard to pick a difference but see it has a support on the rh side also the brake stay is still on it and see it runs from the start to the end of the arm the 74 comes off that rh buddy peg and it is a much shorter part I will post a pic of it soon but it comes off the part that is threaded on the inside of that rh buddy peg.
That is only a minor change I am sure it was to cost cut like the 76 and 75 went to alot of silver painted parts where earlier models were chromed the headlight ears are an example 73 gt1 and 74 gta had chrome headlight ears when 75 gtb onwards had silver painted ears.
See I have been paying attention and these minor changes seem major to me it will be period correct thats for sure thanks Michael. :)

I have to agree with you 100% firko, most if not all the 16-18y/old have their heads shoved in an ipod or laptop never seeing the light of day and couldn't put a sentence together.
When i joined up on here about a year ago,i always thought Michael was a mid 20-40 y/old that knew his stuff.
Great work on the GT80 Michael keep the pics coming!
cheers...mario
-
Looks great mate.

-
Good job Frosty.
Looks like this one will go "straight to the poolroom"
-
Yes but not the poolroom my mates lounge room but he will still take it to bike shows. :)
-

They are are so clean you can see the fingerprints on them.
-
They turned out well. Good to see you got the gold nipples too.
-
yes I owe you a thanks too Leith for the perfect job you did on the hubs for me I have a before pic it think I will post it. ;)
-
(http://i656.photobucket.com/albums/uu283/frostype400/056.jpg)
before hubs I cleaned then after this shot ::) but still they were pretty ratty.
-
Well done Frosty. It's going to look SWEET when it's done 8)
You seem to have greasy finger prints like my kids. I swear they just have to walk past the TV and their fingerprints appear magically ;D ;D Better keep that lint free cloth handy mate ;D
-
Thanks the finger prints show up in pics more than what they do with it sitting next to me my hands are always dirty I am a plumbing apprentice that is what I do I have about 15 cuts on my hands at the moment. ;D
Any way I have got a nos IRC trails tyre the one that was originally on the bike for the front unfortunetly I couldn't get a nos IRC rear trial though well not yet any way I have a different on to suit but would like the proper IRC rear 14 trails tyre any one got one new by the off chance I checked the IRC website but they didn't seem to have the same pattern and same size.
-
Have you tryed the Bruce Collins Enterprises website? they are IRC importer/wholesaler. Ficeda Adelaide also are wholesaler for IRC and i got their new catalogue so i will look tomorrow for you. There is also a few Vintage tyre suppliers around with odd ball tyres. I know theres a few in UK. Just google 'vintage tyre supplies' or something like that.
-
Exceptional work Frosty!
If you put the same effort into your apprenticeship you'll make a great tradey!
Just curious about cleaning and polishing the hubs, did you have them cleaned by blasting/chemical or just elbow grease?
Peter B
-
they were glass bead blasted and then polished not by myself though.
Also gold nipples must be standard on the gt80 they were NOS spoke sets.
-
I got a few more parts to put on

Frosty Did classic Chrome in Geelong do the rims?
-
No they didn't, classic chrome I used, well Dad used to do some trims for our coupe but the wheels were done in Melbourne I am trying to find out where my mate the original owner of the bike had them done he is coming down thursday so I will check with him again.
Although the guy at classic chrome is great at drip rails window trims etc etc for cars.
I was told by two different people not to have any chroming done in Geelong? I don't know and now I am a bit worried to test that out.
I haven't had anything rechromed for the gt80 all chrome parts bar rims are NOS.
-
Plus I wanted some things anodized who does that in Geelong? I don't think any one does.
-
try this place for Annodizing. im going to give them a try at some stage. They had a article in ADB a few years ago about all the coatings they do.
http://www.electromold.com.au/home
-
Hi Frosty
Classic Chrome does anodizing as well and I have had a great run with them.
I am shocked :o to hear people say "not to get chrome done in Geelong" but as you can see on the My Bros MR 50 the chrome work is Great.
Classic Chrome Anodized everything on the bike and they Chrome plated the rims ,Kick Starter,Gear Leaver, Shocks,Exhaust Guard and Bars.
I don't want to sound like I am there sales man but they are very good to deal with and every time i go in there i am amazed at the amount of Vintage bike bits lined up to be polished or Chrome plated especially Fuel tanks. ;D
(http://i593.photobucket.com/albums/tt12/hardexgun/542aae8b.jpg)
-
Hardex, out of interest mate, that radial fin head beside the MR, does it fit the MR? Nice little bike too, may I add the pic to my online collection?..gotta love the old mini's regardless of make 8)
-
I am not bagging classic chrome they did an A1 job on my dads coupe trims they fixed all the dings and the chrome was perfect and they were that busy so that is always a good sign others told me there isn't any one in geelong that does a good job of it but I think that may be wrong.
That MR looks mint when my GT80 is done I could bring it past going to have to take it somewhere to have some good photos taken.
I will be dropping some things in to classic chrome I need some PE rims anodized swingarms etc etc thanks Michael.
-
look forward to seeing the little GT finished Frosty, sounds like it'll be a sweet thing and possibly one of the best in Oz ;)
-
Frosty you can near bet most of the old mini's (unless restored) have been thrashed within an inch of their life. 80's and 50's seem to suffer more from non mechanically minded idiot adults who ride them like spastics :-X seems a little harsh but I couldn't think of any other way to discribe them accurately ::) ;)
-
You're doing a great job on the little GT80 Michael, I really look forward to seeing it.
I saw your ad on the Swapmeet this morning, have you had any replies yet mate?
-
Thanks Firko, I haven't had any replies yet no drama's though.
My mate is very excited about the gt80 my Dad was working on his house and he was saying let him know how much I have spent so he could pay me.
Although it isn't like I ever cared about the money so Dad said why don't you give him a bike of his so looks like I am getting a nice xr500 although I will always still be able to see the bike and get it back from my mate down the track he wants to take it to all bike shows he may win a prize too, thanks Michael.
-
I just got the wheels back from my mate who put the tyres on and they look great I was thinking about doing it myself but I thought I would scratch them so my mate who has a tyre shop did them no dramas and no scratches. :)
I will post a photo of them I need two things before I can get it rolling a headlight bracket and a steering stem bolt. :)

They look pretty cool the front tyre is a nos irc what the bike rolled out on originally when I got it it had the yamaha bag and sticker on it with the gt80 front tyre part number but the rear is another brand that suits same tread pattern should look good when they are on. :)
-
Of course my dad scared the crap out of me with these though he said our mate rang and is doing them for free because he got a few big scratches on them and I nearly died but he was joking luckily. :)
-
Ha ha....let your dads tyres on his car down Michael and see if he laughs.
Looking good so far.
cheers mario

Some more progress thanks Michael.
-
That is looking great Frosty, should be a prize winner.
You should get it registered on the road ;D
Much more to do?
cheers..mario
-
Little bits mainly bolts and screws think I will be taking off the exhaust to respray it because it didn't come up that well needs a coat or two more I think looks great with the chrome on I think I am pretty fussy though I won't be able to sleep if I know the pipes paint is not 100% thanks Michael. ;)
-
That definately needs a red plate on the back Frosty. :)
-
Frosty when you take the the pipe off to repaint it you should paint the white 80 part of the exhaust badge RED as they were not white on the GT80A, (that year only) they were white the first year and from the GT80B onwards, sorry I am being anual about the badge ;D, the GT80 looks great.
-
Not trying to highjack, Dave (Betric) is that the same as that school mate of yours who would come to menai with us Glen Hunter ??
Cheers
Stewart
-
Hi Stewart, no Glen had the first model 73 GT80 known as the GT1, his was the same colour blue as frosty's but with a different style of white strip, I can still remember him flying past me on an early Sunday morning down Deadmans Hill on Heathcote rd flat out on that GT80 with sparks come from the exhaust on our way out to Meni, I think I was on my XR75 LOL ;D
-
Thought I'd post a photo to show I haven't been doing nothing only minor parts needed now it is ready to fire up, thanks Michael.
And I haven't painted the badge only because my mate doesn't want me to I don't know how his looked when new but he does it came from Peter Stevens in Melbourne but I don't know they may have used some other bits from a 73 model it is definetly a 74 when we stripped the tank the graphics were still there and they were 74 style and I did have a photo of it new.
I can always paint the badge but my mate might get mad about it. ;D
Here is a photo from when it was new the only one that my mate could track down I am sure he would have had others but the bushfires took care of them.

-
Looks the goods Frosty.....I dont know what it is as I never had a bike untill I was 15 but I love the little 80's....it's pretty cool someone your age doing a bike that your Father probably lusted after. 8)......keep up the good work.
-
Thanks Davey, my Dad did use to ride it it was his best friends bike, one of the stories he tells me about it is how when his mate got it new they were ridding it around a small yard and Dad stacked it and busted the back indicator off this is when it was brand new, his mate was pretty pissed about it. ;D
I have a couple of bikes I want to do up the same my pe400z and my rd250cd and who knows what else, thanks Michael.
Couple more angles.

-
Good job Michael. Both you and that little bike have come a long way. ;)
-
Thanks Firko, yes it has taken a long time to get it like this it is ready to fire up and it should run like new I had a bit of fun finding spark though, I found a wire hadn't been pushed in properly and then I thought I would hold the wire for the coil and copped a fair zap. ;D
I put a nos plug cap on yesterday I just need to get some screws for the levers fit the brake light switch fix the clutch cable and then I am finished.
I also have a plate coming for just a novelty one but the right size and it will say GT80A should finish the bike off, thanks Michael.
