This looks like a trick one on eBay US.

The more I look at the eBay bike the less I'm convinced of its originality. The standard DT1 wheels, chrome pipe, metallic paint, Thermal Flow shocks, incorrect side panel (from either a Montesa or Zundapp model), YZA clutch cover, later kick starter and that overly thick suede seat put me off. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a cool bike but for the kind of money this bike is fetching I'd want genuine Rickman hubs, proper Girling shrouded shocks, correct DT1 clutch cover, proper painted pipe and be finished in factory BRG and with a vinyl or leather seat, not suede, (that's for dancin' shoes in a nice shade of blue, not race bikes ;D) . Compare the correct factory finish bike below with our ebay bike and see what I mean. I reckon it's a typical American overrestoration.
Having slammed the originality factor, it's still a nice little scooter and I'd like it in Casa del Firkos climatically controlled garage.

Hey Alison, I see your Sprite/AE ad on the swapmeet...what are you looking for specifically?
-
Nothing in particular-what ever anyone has got...well even a part of a frame would be good ;D why is there no others out there on the market on the tracks etc ? Needle in a hay stack.
Stevens right happy with the tank we got from UK.He reckons it has been sitting on something else as we have to take a wee snip of the back edge.We have a mate to mould if need be.
cheers

Jonesys unrestored but pretty nice AE 405 will be debuting at CD7 and I'll be making a start on the Sprite/Maico 360 after the Cheneys done so there's two in the wind.

Good Oh ... 8)
Both above bikes priced at 7500 mark.
Maybe the 71 is going for the Steven McQueen/Son style buyer market :-\

Or you can build a budget Metisse like I've been describing using a Mk4 Micro Metisse frame. I reckon the below Maico Metisse will come in under 4k doing all of the work myself. I'm using a 250 Maico squarie motor I bought from Paul, a 100 buck eBay '74 Zundapp Metisse frame and my new custom bodywork from the UK that cost $500. All the rest comprises of Maico back wheel, Rickman front wheel and OSSA SDR Betor forks and all sorts of second hand bibs and bobs. The only downside is that it's a pre 70 engine in a pre 75 frame that looks like a pre '65 bike because of the Mk3 Metisse bodywork. It's a pity it has to race in pre '75.

I've just noticed that the side panel is from the other side, on backwards. :-[

Here's yet another couple of neat hot rod specials using a Rickman Zundapp as a base. The first little beauty has a 200cc Triumph Tiger Cub engine and apparently it runs pretty well in its AHRMA class. The other one has an SL125 Honda engine, similar to Jonesys purple "Ugly Betty".

Here's a beautiful Mk3 Metisse with a Villiers Starmaker/AJS Stormer engine currently up for grabs on UK eBay. Being a Mk3, this one is pre 65 legal as opposed to the above Mk4 DT1 bike which is pre 70 legal. If you look carefully you can see that the Mk3 and Mk4 are very different machines. Besides the obvious bodywork variences, the frames are totally different. My yellow mock up is a Mk4 frame with M3 bodywork, a combo of both. It'll be interesting to see how much this goes for compared to the Mk4 DT1 bike.

Firko did you have to modify the frame to fit the Paul Maico 250 engine in or do the Zundapp/Metiise frames fit all types of engines ?

Alison, the only mods needed to fit the Maico engine have been fabricating front and rear engine mounts, designing a new head mount and a slight modification to the clutch cover to fit inside a frame rail. Whether all types of engines fit is a big doubt. I do know that Yamaha DT1/RT1, Maico250-400, Honda SL125, Triumph Tiger Cub 200cc and BSA B25 engines fit for certain, everything else would be on a suck it and see basis. I have also discovered by accident that a Maico swingarm is almost a bolt in, giving the bike a much needed extra 3" of wheelbase. Everything to do with these engine swap bikes is all trial and error and hammer and chisel boilermaker technology.

Thanks Firko,
Good news, keeping the price and rebuild time down.Another piece of info for budget bikes. :)

Here's a ridgy didge M11 Bultaco Metisse Basket case. They're pretty scarse but this is top dollar for a basketcase.
