Ok well thats what i 'thought' too but that is no proof and i didnt just want to go by what i thought so thats why i was looking for more solid info. I know there was KTM 80s pre 85 but i think they were twinshocks. Is there a KTM website with all models listed?

The KTM 80MX came out in 1985. Man I wanted 1 BAD :'(. There was also a 50 at the same time. It was the same roller but different motor. I dont think the 50 motor was KTM. The only earlier 80cc I have seen were full sized bikes, twin shock & not KTM motors.

So if it came out in 85 it was probably a 86 model and 86 was the first model? I found a microfiche dated september 85 so i reckon it would have to be for 86 model and not 85. Would you have a photo of the KTM 50?

 Rule of Toe

If the Bike was made arfter July   ( eg 8207 = August 1982 ) it was for the next year season

But that dose not mean the Bike may be a Carry over Modle .It was made for Sale for the next year .

Goto this site & clik on manuals & catalogues. Scroll down to 87 models. There is a brochure on the 87 bikes. Including the 50. I tried to goto the photo but it wont let me ::). www.ktm495.mxbikes.com/

$1700 :)

Hi Mike would i be able to see a copy of that add? if you reckon its in Jan 85 that wouldnt make sense because i thought the first model was a 86 which i dont think would have been available as early as Jan 85? If there was an ad in jan 85 then that certainly is of interest.

Whitey - PM comming.

Hi guys,
i have just got hold of a November 1984 edition of Trail & Track and it shows a picture of a KTM 80, watercooled with conventional forks and states that Bert Flood was expecting them for March 1985 at a cost of $1700.

It has a Pro Lever sticker on the swingarm but you can`t see what type of shock it has, they were released at the 1984 Colonge Motor show.  Peter.

Thats very interesting. Anychance i can see that article of a shot of the cover? If i see the cover i migth know if i have that magazine. Everywhere up until now i could only find out the first model was a 86 but i cant see that they had them released that far in advance at late 84/early 85 so perhapse there was a 85 model? im going to have to try do some more research i think.

I will take a photo of the cover and email it to you tomorrow, the cover has a 1985 Honda CR250RF doing a jump as the main picture. November 1984 edition.    Peter.

85 was the first model as I said earlier. The rear shock was WP forks were Mazochies. F/disc very light very fast & $350 more than the YZ. The bike didnt change much until ie was droped. o also it run a huge carb for an 80cc (actually 76cc). I think it was a 34mm Delorto.

Well, i spent ages last night looking through my mags and i found that same article you have just posted. Its is in ADB labeled feb 85. I have never seen a KTM 80 like that before. Now heres the interesting thing. That one is called a 80 LC and the later ones are a 80MX and there was also a 85 CC version and one called a 'pro mini' or something. Around 87 they had 2 models, i think one was just big wheels and an extra 5cc. I also found in Trail and Track September 85 there is a test on one and it says that Bert Flood got the first one in Australia and T&T were the first to look at it. Now its not clear if this bike is a 85 or 86 model but they appear to be saying its the first 80 brought specially to Australia by Bert Flood who air freighted it in and that another 15 were comming in the first shipment and then 80 after that. The photo above shows the pipe on the left side and i reckon the radiator must be on the right side but on the test bike in T&T, it looks a lot different. I cant see whats writen on the seat but on the tank shroud is 80MX and the pipe is on the right side and the radiator on the left side. So the questions are, is the photo above of a 85 model that didnt come to Australia or is it a prototype 85 model? And is the one that T&T tested an early 86 model that came out september/october 85 or is it actually an 85 model that were really late to arrive almost at the end of 1985, and is the bike in T&T that is tested actually an 85 but what they production ones ended up looking like instead of the photo above?. I dont really know but i want to try and find more photos/info on the bike shown above and info on the 85 model.

If you notice my photo the bike I am riding is a 1980-81 KTM 125 LC.
I have been looking for a photo of one of these and it seems that they don,t exist.
So what am I riding?
I know of 2 in Aus and they are both in the Enduro photo,s by IT400c in the foto forum. :)
Both bikes came out of a dealer in Toowoomba. :P

I reckon i might have a photo of a 81 KTM 125 Lc. My friend in USA has a 82 125 LC and that is a rare one too. We can only find 2 photos of one on the web. I am very sure i a have a magazine article on a 81 125 Lc too in ADB. There is an italian website with a lot of 80's KTM photos but i couldnt find any 80's on there. Will find you the link later.

Yeah in the test in T&T they mentioned that they were not sure if the 80 bottom end was going to be the 125 bottom end but instead it ended up being specifically designed for the 80. Will be interesting to also see what billetYZ found yeseterday and the photo at the Cologne motor show.

Yep i got it thanks. I knew i didnt have that issue as soon as i saw the cover. Same bike in above pic. Its says they expected them in March but in the september 85 ADB they say that got the first KTM 80 the day before the article was done. Im guessing the article/test was done in August sometime. And the bike looks totally different to the one that says 80LC on the seat. I wonder if that is just a prototype one?

This is the one i got the test on

Yeah i can see that. The website i found the photo above said it was a 84 but im sure thats a mistake. I begining to think there was an 85 model that looked like the one above but i cant find any more pics/articles/brochures on it and so far can only find the 'bike show' type photos. I reckon they must be extremely rare as i can only seem to find the ones with the radiator on the left which seem to be the 86 onwards models.

does yours have the radiator down the sides? This is a rare 82. I know a guy with one of these in USA and i found some NOS radiator shrouds for him in italy for real cheap $

Na up under tank with a funny front number plate to lead the air in under the tank which had a scoopy front.
Held no fuel.
Hence the ally tank seen in some photos of it.
I no longer own that bike. Pity :'(

Now it gets real ugly.

This is the manual given to me when I bought the bike.
BUT my bike did not have a waterpump. It was a thermosiphon. :o
My bike had a different shape fuel tank with wings to catch the air and no stickers. Had the KTM badge.
Tank same shape as the other photo I posted.
The compliance plate( which I still have cause I was too lazy to fit it) says 125GS. 1/82
But I was racing it in late 81, so figure that

Yeah Slakewell my friend said the 82 water cooled pro lever KTM 125 MX is very rare. He has found it impossible to find a parts book or workshop manual for it and i also tryed looking too. The bike is different to 81 and 83. We only found 2 photos of one on the net. The one i posted last night and this one

Ah now there,s a story.
I got in touch with the EXPERT plastic welders in Bris and asked them if they could weld Acrebis plastics.
The reply was yes so I cut my new tank to get more lock.
Then I took it to the welders who discovered that they could NOT weld Acrebis plastics.
Woops. :o
So I sorta welded it myself then went to the local airport and got some fuel tank sealer and volia, one KTM with heaps of lock.
No one ever picked that I had done it. :)
That bike made me twice as good as I really was. :)
