Im thinking of buying this as you cant get a 77 MC5 here what would pay in Aussie $ for this if it lived near by.

An arm and a leg.

I know a bloke who would be very interested in owning that bike.

Pretty as a picture.

Im not sure it's a real MC5 I think its a GS on a close look the tripples are not correct and the tank is to big. But a nice looking bike all the same. Looks like my search goes on.

GS has rear frame loop as a solid part of the frame, and much larger tank , see photos :

its an MC5.Tank is good .it has "world champion" on it , pretty rare .I think in the US they had Penton there instead, not sure . Silencer and shocks are not original . Forks might be Marzoochi instead of Cerianis not sure but it nice - worth lots.

Note straight not sweeped tripples clamps and more frame showing at the front of the tank.

These forks are correct and you are right about the tank. Im thinking that the first bike might be a 78 made to look like the earlier model .The tank color is a bit off so maybe a repainted 78

77 had Marzoochi instead of Cerianis 76 Cerianis had the nut on the bottom

Yes, they're nice looking bikes alright.
I had a 76 400 in recently. I beleive it started life as the Enduro model.
I think it will be ridden at the Nats.

I still reckon you should make Brad an offer he can't refuse on the '77 360 Kato I sold him a few years ago Mick. It's a sweet bike and one I really wish I hadn't sold. Wave a quid in his face and tell him he doesn't need it.

I think it is very close to an MC5. You cant see in the picture but a true MC5 as I know it will not have the bottom engine mounts. GS models did. Tank looks to me like an MC5 tank but you are right in it being too far forward.Very few American MC5 s came with Ceriani forks, especially 1977 ones. Not sure about Aussie ones for 1977 probably Marzzochi. Not sure when set back top triple clamps came in. would have thought 1979. Highly doubt that Brad would sell his 400.

I doubt it too 151, it's a nice bike and I think it's one of Brads favourites. I found it under a neighbours house where it had sat for 25 years after only one season of enduros. It still had the original front tyre. I think it's a 360, not a 400 though.

Still, it's worth a shot, everyone has a price, even Brad!.........Ding, there's the doorbell......I'm off to Broadford, see you all there or on here on Tuesday. ;D

They are cool looking bikes the Katos, where up the front in the world GP,s in that era as well. From what I understand there as reliable as a energiser battery and I think very trick looking with all the hollowed and drilled out bits and peices!!. I would deffinately like one in my shed, much cooler than a Maico breako :o....... one day maybe?

Mick,

The Penton pic you posted does appear to have 78 forks & triples. The swingarm appears 77 (or modified back to 77 spec). The tank may just be sitting further forward w the slop in the system.

Its hard to know about the frame tho. The top shock mount on the 78s was quite a bit further forward & up compared to 77's (at least the early 77s), but that one seems to be between the 77s & 78s. Maybe it's late 77 frame ??? Or a mod'd 78 frame.

The footpeg location is diff too. Looks like they've been moved forward like the 78 MC had. (78 GS was more rearward, like 77 GS & MC))

I believe the 77 & 78 GS ran the hi-breather frames w pressed steel backbones. If yr worried it maybe GS frame, ask for a pic w'out the tank. A pic w'out the sidecover may reveal a bit too.

:)    Slightly off thread Geoff, but that's a nice looking pipe.    Are you able to say which end of the speed range it's desighned for, and would you be up for making another one ?
