Now have a 988 250 engine with dual coil ignition.Jikov has advised to get rid of the top lighting coil and parallel wire the remaining coils into a single circuit.I have a later Falta points ignition and flywheel would that just be a bolt on fitment and a better option? Also are 125 and 250 points ignitions interchangeable across the range?
-
Had a look at my 74 parts book & all the ignitions run the same part numbers so I'd guess they should be the same
-
I hate points and the windings that seem to fail. Electronic all the way.
-
Yeah I know Brad, there's just something about points that makes me want to stay with them. They dont call it Tight Arse Race Team for nothin'! ;)
-
Check your Falta rotor taper as most 250 later Falta models had the smaller crank taper. The 988 enduro motor has the std taper on all CZ models pre 74
if the rotor fits the rest will bolt on

HI,
If you keep the original flywheel ignition , you also keep the same traction , ie;the smaller/lighter ignition rotor, will make it rev quicker, vibrate more, and wheelspin easier,(harder to ride?) , have a look at how many after market heavier weight flywheels are available for the current batch of Modern MXers. ever wonder why?

I'm still running points on mine with both plugs firing & wonder why all the electronic ignitions seem to only run the rear plug. I remember being told of & experiencing the total loss of power at low revs if the front plug fouled.
Are there any of electronic ignitions that run both plugs?
-
Yes, I run a twin coil/plug Femsa electronic ignition. I haven't seen many of them around for sale the last few years but they were readily available when CZs ruled the roost.
-
My 250 with a motoplat ignition tries to tear the lugs off the clutch plates. Now fitted with TS185ER ignition and flywheel with no problems. Also a lot easier to ride.
-
Tony, I use an IT ignition and run a twin lead coil firing 2 plugs. No dramas.
-
I've seen a femsa stator but no coils, are they specific to cz's or interchangeable?
What sort if work is involved in fitting the IT/TS ignitions? Machining work is no problem as a toolmaker with a understanding boss & from memory I have a spare cover around somewhere
What twin plug coil are you using Canam? Only one I've had much to do with is GT500 Suzuki which I think would be common to the 250s as well
I figure the TS ignition would be easiest to find due to the length of time they were made
Any pointers would be a big help to a lot of people :)

I just spent nearly 5 hours with an intermittent ignition problem with the points on my twin pipe. I didn't want to put the ts185 ignition back on till after it was sorted and thought it would do for the nationals...WRONG! I felt like necking myself. Put the ts ignition on and she fired straight up.
F#%king points. Never again will I waste my life on them.

my points ingition 1972 cz400 starts 3rd kick from cold and first when hot.
my tt500 running points starts the same
my cr250m running points starts the same
they are easy to set up now i have learnt how

Which side of the original coils are positive & negative? Which side do the points connect to?
-
CZ coils are
Number 1 marked post is points wire
Number 15 is Earth
Also some of the later coils are 8 volt
The Clymer manual is wrong on the photos of the MX wiring
Cheers

The coils fitted are not the originals, they are black with positive & negative terminals. What would happen if the wires went to the wrong side?
