Those things are in my opinion seriously cool. I remember reading and re-reading the Bill Bell article in Cycle World and drooling. I would love one of those things. What a great project, really looking forward to seeing and hearing more about the rebuild.

Looks like a great winter shed project sudman. Do you have a lemon tree out the back? And a wall of offerings to the “God of Speed”?

Yep it's going to be a bit of fun, thanks for the old pic, I did manage to find a few more of the bike in action but in B & W off a French site of all things, there is very little information on the net about this bike & even less pictures so if someone out there has anymore info on Al Bakers 1975 Baja 1000 wining bike let me know.

I also recently got a CJ framed Bill Bell Honda 410 with Simons forks on the front, set of Fox shocks on the rear .  currently having the Siomns forks been rebuilt. The pipe is a straight thru megaphone, with an Electron carb.

crabman, because of your suspension, yours sounds like around  a 77-78 model but sudmans appears to be more like a 75-76 model.

Well spotted JohnnyO I had picked that up as well, it will be good to get a frame number when it gets here to see if I can find out any history of the bike, I have emailed C&J but they have not replied as yet.

Sudman there is a guy in the states who bought all Al Bakers stuff from an old warehouse in California a few years ago.
I've spoken to him and seen some photos of all the Mugen parts and bikes.
He may have some info on Al's C&J bike. I have his name and know someone who could put you in touch.
PM me if you want more details.
Cheers

Nice bike....That's a Champion frame. In 1990 I built a very trick Champion Honda 350, very similar in concept to that bike. Mine had Maico forks, Bultaco Mk8 back wheel, CR 125 tank, Maico seat, very fast and trick stock bore 350 engine. I believe it's soon to race in WA with its third owner since me.

What year is this please Firko..?
I can't put a particular year on it Alison as it's built from a bunch of parts from various years. It was raced in pre '75.

Good stuff,love parcels.  :)
Found another bit on Baja..not a totally happy story, though the burgers and bikes nights sounds a good nosh up.....  :P

http://www.earlyyearsofmx.com:80/
The Early Years of MX Museum has been open since early 2006 for special events only. Of special interest is his collection of 11 Husqvarna’s that include the 500cc Baja Invader (1 of 3 twin cylinder off-road bikes built by the factory) that won the 1969 Baja 1000. Other interesting motorcycles include a 1968 Suzuki TM250 (1 of 65) that was the first Japanese production MX’er, a Bultaco Rickman Metisse (1 of 24), and a 1972 XR750 similar to the one White raced on Grand National dirt tracks. The museum has many posters from the earliest years of MX in America and many of Edison Dye’s (the man who brought MX to America) original photos and documents.

I don't know how he does it but Klub Kevlars Las Vegas operative Bob Neilson has unearthed another gem barnfind. Bob's the bloke who recently sold the 500 Triumph Hindall on eBay and who sold me my B&S TM400 and other stuff. He purchased this very early  C&J XL350 from the original owner who was a mate of Linn Kastin, one of the original owners of C&J who custom built the bike to the owners specs. According to Bob it's got a number of features not seen on the normal C&J. I'm sure the DT1 parcel rack isn't one of them. The Lyta tank will hopefully soon ne enroute to Casa del Firko.

Below is the Trackmaster Harley Bob bought with the proceeds from the Hindall sale. The engine's an early Sportster with a stroker crank and shitloads of unobtainium. Cool or what? Bobs got some seriously interesting machines in his 20 bike collection.

No Col, Bob's going to do a co production resto with his son. They're possibly changing to an Elsinore tank so I've put my hand up for the Lyta Goldy tank. The decisions yet to be made.

Wow old bobs got a nose for finding stuff, and the querky, looks like a tracy glass kit thats using a TRackstyle tank molded to a champion rear like the triumph ones tyhat were getting around.

Doubt its trackmaster though, the swing arm has been heavily modded and one off where it comes into the frame ( flat bar not tubed).  Im guessing a normal harley doenst use a rear loop either ? but neither did Ray or neil so its a custom frame or a splice in.  Suss out the lack of gusset area not normal sonic/track, more like a street bike or chopper framer conversion/maker.

ealry Snow flake wheels........ makes it look more like the old black/gold ducati road bike, look heaps sexy with some nice wide Borrani spoked set.    Cant say i like the anodised stuff  - eeeek  ....  even if it was just one colour anodised would look heaps tougher.

still be a interesting thing to get around on.  I think its got heaps of potential if he gets retro on it,  spoke wheels for sure though

Id love to get something like that and shove some of them loooooog forks in it, be a cool Retro chopper.

Did he ever finish that other blue/white one peice glass chopper thing he had before ( truimph? )or did he return it to track trim?

Id be inclined

Freaky....Being the wheeler dealer Bob is, he's already passed the Harley on to Brian Deitz . Brian's a mega collector who owns the hanger next to Jay Leno at Santa Monica airport and has a very cool collection of dirt track and road racers plus some unique motocrossers. Brians currently hounding me to sell him my Boyd and Stellings TM and to talk Jonesy into selling him his Hagon TT500 monocoque mx'er.

Bob had a post on the VFT site asking if anyone knew of the bikes history. A previous owner got in touch with him and  informed him that the frame's a Trackmaster that's been extended 8" to take the Harley Sportster engine. The engines a stroker hot rod engine with lots of go fast goodies. It started life as a street bike but has been recently used for vintage dirt track. The original owner ran the bike at the Bonneville speed trials about 25 years ago fitted with a blower and Hilborn injection but Bob doesn't know how fast it went. Bob said that Brian wants to put it on the street which we all agreed is where it belongs. Whatever, it's a very cool bike.
Bobs got the Sonic/Tracy old school chopper on the street and that's the way its staying. He did toy with the idea of building it as a dirt bike but decided to keep it as it is.

Nice... that hard tail chopper is the ducks guts in retro porn i reakon.  8)

The HD still looks like a splice into me, there too much going on there for it too be early iron, but if they have added the rear loop for glass and the front end is a cut in from the HD then would explain a bit , and as a salt flat runner they make some odd shit up.

YEah id have moved that HD on too it was a lot of work and in no man's land, you would need to make it into something, it was lost in the state it was.

thans for the update.

thanks

We're hijacking Sudmans thread here, my apologies mate, but I'll try and steer it back on course directly. For want of somewhere else to place this info about Bobs Sportster here's a little blog page from Sideburn Magazines website. To me the bike appears to be a stretched Trackmaster (8''as the original owner has indicated) but it's pretty obvious it's been built for something other than dirt track even though it'd probably work OK on a longer mile style track. The bikes supposed salt racing heritage is interesting but I reckon it's not even set up correctly for salt racing. Without the benefit of a closer photo, I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't a Boyd and Stellings aluminium swingarm. To me it's a very cool street tracker and I think the Tracy style bodywork and Rokon wheels seperate it from the 'everyday' Harley street tracker. Bob's done a swap deal with Brian Deitz for something "very rare and special" that he'll be sending me photos and infor on next week. http://sideburnmag.blogspot.com/2010/05/bobs-sporty.html (http://sideburnmag.blogspot.com/2010/05/bobs-sporty.html)

C&J Prototype frame for the Honda XL 250/350 engines.
Please read the email from Denis Curtis, of Curtis Frames in Canada.

Hello Richard,
The reason I know it's a C&J is that early in '73 when the XL350 first came out I was approached by Clarke Simpkins Honda (Clarke Simpkins was the distributor of Honda products for British Columbia and Alberta at that time) Race director, who asked me to build an enduro frame and a motocross frame for the big single. What you see on my Curtis Racing website was the first enduro version, what you don't see is the later version of Enduro/MX/Desert Racer.
During the time I was building the bikes another racer friend shows up at my shop with a frame kit from California made by C&J. I have a picture of it somewhere. He had been road racing at Ontario motor Speedway in L.A. (now defunct) and had seen this C&J prototype in the paddock, being shown to several people.
He noticed, as did I, that the rear of the engine was held in a cradle which was mounted to the swing arm pivot and to the frame. The originator of that style of frame was Doug Schwerma of Champion Racing Frames, and he used that principle on all his Dirt Track racers.
One of the founders of C&J was a prevoius employee of Champion so there is the link. C&J went on to change the design of their frames.
I knew Doug Schwerma through Yamaha Motor Canada and we consulted on several joint projects particularly around Dirt Trackers. I never used that rear engine cradle idea on any of my frames, and that is how I know what frame you have!

Denis

So, I now have confirmation that backs up my original thoughts of this being a C&J frame.

$2000.00 plus shipping. Where eles will you find a C&J prototype frame?

Thanks Mark,

Richard

Alison your radar works so well I bet Steve & man child can't get away with anything :)

It has made it to NZ just waiting for customs to clear it, have not done to much other than collecting bits from the state, CR250 seat, new sprockets, footpegs etc dummy up the engine to make mounts & that's about it.

Had some VMX friends just come back from Kalgoorlie, they have family up there working in the Superpit, went out with metal detector & after about an hour found a nugget about size of small golf ball. :D
Also had a bit of fun riding in the red dust on a new CRF450.

No they got their secrets  ;D  We found an C&J in the states and waiting on an email-second in line  :P (How could you need to wait on finance for such an item  ::)  ::) sell ya grandmother buy buy I say  ;D  , anyway so that's when I thought of your c&j on it's way  ;D
Gold !! very nice size to unearth,  now they are friends to hang out with.Heading up to the Goldfields next weekend, maybe the big bore pre85 will uncover some nuggets at the King of the Cross 25th Anniversary.  :P

Was it the one from Marks swap meet site? I have seen pitures of that one, there is also a very cool one on ebay as well all road legal. Hope you get it they are so light less than half the weight of the Honda frame.

On page three of this thread I posted some shots of Bob Neilsons barn find "C&J" XL Honda. Bob and I have done a bit of research of the bike and now know that it's a Redline framed bike that was built for the best mate of Redline owner Linn Kastin. Once it was realised just how rare the bike was in relation to its bargain $1600 price Alan Jones has bought it and it's now on its way to Oz. Apparently the bike was used for desert racing around 1974/5 and has quite a sturdy engine, supposedly built by Bill Bell. This is yet another example that if you're prepared to look outside of the circle, there are some gems still to be had for recession prices.

The Centre port frame came out in late 74 as per the price list above being 1st of Jan 1975,back then a lot of XL were being changed to centre port, Honda's centre motor did not come out until late 75, if you take a look at the Al Baker bike at the start of this post you will see it has a centre port head but side port cases.

Cheers

loving the pictures of the two bikes on the trailer.  Those frames are once again readily available, (subject to a deposit and the time reqd to build the frame).  The fastest twinshock 4 stroke in the northern hemisphere is one of these and blasts the opposition into the weeds.  The motor is highly tuned as is the rider.  It eats 490 Maicos for breakfast.....

Looks stunning and sounds incredible which is a great combination!

What year is this please Firko..?

Alison - Champions came pre 70, pre 75 and pre 80, the later ones had the mulit position swing arms and a few little changes, the early ones look a little more like a Dt1/Square barrel maicos, head stem stamps also changed from numbers to letter-numbers.

Probally just as easy to place them by the motor in it, and the swing arm.

Alison, that particular frame was stamped 1973. I bought from a guy who'd bought two in 1973 thinking he'd build a 250 as well as his 350. He never did get around to building the second bike so he covered the frame in Vaseline and wrapped it in Gladwrap ( ;D) and stuck it in his garage attic and forgot about it until 1989 when I asked him if he knew of one after running into him at the Dick Mann meeting at Sandhill Ranch where he was racing his original Champion XL350. We did the deal and I brought it home as excess baggage.

Do you know who's got the bike over there? I put a lot of love into that Champion and still reckon it was my neatest special build. I only sold it because I don't like the ergos of the Champion frame as an MXer. I just never felt comfortable on it. When (if) you do eventually run into the bike and its owner, I'd like to see if he's got the original engine I built for it. I know that later owners Darren Cheney and Owen Hutcheson fitted different engines and that my motor hadn't been used. If it still exists I'd like the chance of buying it back for sentimental reasons.......plus that minor fact that it's a pretty handy performer.

Will keep our eyes peeled..you know it might belong to one of thoses vaseline/gladwrap people again.

Craig should be picking up the Cheney in a week two, motor is rebuilt so hopefully it shouldn't be too much of a mission to bolt some forks and shocks on.

Nice find Paul I tried to buy that bike about two years ago (XL350), but the old owner would not ship it. Here is the old ad copy.

XL 350 (420CC) Bought for a project bike. Just don't have the time to work on it.
It runs but needs work. I think it's a C&J chassis. Late 70's forks. S&W Shocks.
$2000.00 OBO Call or Email for more info or Photos.

I don't need it now I two of them.

I've been watching that XR500.. would be a cool bike to own. It has some history, owner John Hateley was a big dirt track star in the 70's.

I call in and see Tony (sudman) every trip through thru palmie and have a coffee , he is getting weaker all the time but still seems to be in good spirits & takes a keen interest in my progress with the '74 C&J XL412 that I bought off him (the black one on page 1 of this thread)
Tony is a top bloke , the world needs more sudmen
