Title: Opinions Please - What's the most collectible CR500
Post by: YZ250H on March 23, 2010, 03:41:12 pm
No I'm not lost - I came to the Honda room on purpose  ;D ;D.
I like the look of some of these beasts, so which year is the most collectible ?

1985 was the first watercooled and the "beast".

To me though the 87 is the finest looking and I believe a little more ride-able than the 85 beastie!

Scunge,wrong again mate.
It has to be the either the first 500 the 1984 500RE or the master blaster 1985 500RF.Even we Suzuki men know that!

Bloody hell whats going on here ??? we have a white knight Yammy riding getting Honda advise from a Sheep shagging Suzuki man :o

Well I am depressed :(

But 250H old man the sheep shagger is on the mark with the 84 5hundy. But I do like the 85 as well. Hummm 87 yes that was a fine bike oh yeah the 89 is great looking as well ;)

Well that should help.

Speaking of confessions Shanieboy,its time for you to confess that the 1984 RM 250 was too much for you, hence the need to retreat to the gentle girly Hondas!

Yes, Yes I know - 'twas a moment of weekness when I was bored at work :-[ :-[.  I will never speak of it again (but secretly take the 1984 information away with me)  Maybe if I can get the damn 465 to run properly I will be cured of this red scurge  :o :o

good on ya YZ250H welcome, sick of piano's huh  ;)

for me it's the following

1984 CR500RE as its a  pre85 bike with a front disc
1985 CR500RF the one that's claimed to have the most horsepower, but a nice ride all the same.

all being well YZ250H and my 1985 CR500RF is with me at CD7 , your welcome to a test ride.

So the RE is aircooled from what I can gather from the above - when was the CR480  bought out ??

Just realised you Honda blokes could be telling me absoultely anything (ie taking the piss) and I would be none the wiser ::) ::).  On reflection probably not much different than the norm   ;D

edit - can't spell for crap

Post by: worms on March 23, 2010, 07:30:43 pm
RE is water cooled, really these honda blokes arnt too bad, it's just that if we all rode hondas, we would have nothing to bag each other about, and yes i have a 85 cr250, and yes it's a demon to ride, yes i blamed my son, but Yamaha's rule soooo what more can i say.

Cheers Trev

No, we'll just make you suffer the indignity and the humiliation of thinking about owning a Honduh.
(Says the may who owns... let me see... four of the bluddy things [edit: None of them are CR500s though]).

Let's see what the Nancy Boys have to add to this:

81 = 450 = pooh.
82 = 480 = much better.
83 = 480 = much refined (particularly suspension and 5-speed).
84 = 500 = better again, still air-cooled.
85, first of the water cooled. Bulk HP by most claims.
86, I believe just an update of the 85, power spread widened.
87, gets rear disc and (more importantly) cartridge forks.
88, just refinements.
89, crappy USD forks, and  think the crappy delta-link rear end.

going against the concensus here - 83/84 for great (aircooled)pre 85 bikes

I didnt like the 85 . Alot of power but harder to ride than the 86/87 plus the 85 had none cartridge forks and a whimpy shock. 86/87 had cartridge forks and half decent (tunable) rear shocks.

I don't know anything about them.......... and I can't recall ever riding one............. but for me the coolest looking big CR was the '83 480.  ;D

With the '84 500 a close second if it weren't for the "cooling wings".  ::)

Yes Yes Craig I had an 84 RM 250 and it was a bit much for me (had good power that thing)

I agree with frostype400. The 450 was a great looking bike. Just DONT ride it :o. In the 500s I like the 86 or 87.
Title: Re: Opinions Please - What's the most collectible CR500

Collectible,I'd reckon the 450,or 480.
But,being the owner of an '88 CR500,I like the simplistic race bred look of this model.
Also the power is quite smooth,and for a big bore bike,its a good mannered bike. Point it and thats where it goes,the suspenion is top notch too.
Wether or not its collectible is up to the individual.

                                                      Cheers,Mark.

 Nathan, I think you have hit the mark.However, for the most part the CR500RE has to be the exception.
Aircooled, front disk , sensible front suspension, the best shade of red ,AND CAN SHRED A NEW REAR TYRE IN  10 MINUTES OF OPERATION  :o :o :o :o

The most collectable CR 500 (for Australia) will be one of the registerable models (was it an "E"?) brought out a little while ago. Try and find one let alone buy one for under 7-8 grand.
