Can anybody give me some clues to improve the "performance" of my MK 3 Pursang brakes. I have nearly brand new linings (used twice) all linkages are either new or reconditioned, new front cable. The bloody thing just doesn't want to stop! I have tried laying it down and crashing into the scenery but I would like to be a little more sophisicated. Jerry

Jerry try and get a longer actuator lever off a different model Bully. I had the same problem with my Mk7 360 and I fitted a longer lever(can't remember what model it was off) instant fix. The front brake is now fantastic. If you need the length let me know and I will measure mine.

Campberfield Brake an Clutch in Barrys RD redone the linings on both my CR's , the old ones were like bakelite and sent me on some off track excursions as well, :-[ They work now.

so this Boaty has no anchors then.
What's the hub like? the trick is to match your linings to the hub so that maximum surface area is gained.

Thanks for your advice guys. I'm drawn to your fix Stan because it seems a quicker (and possibly more cost effective) fix. Now I assume we are measuring brake lever actuators here Stan AKA Greg and I have measured mine at 70 mm from centre to centre. I'm keen to know how long yours is if you dont mind bending down and with your 6"(15cm) rule. I guess that may fix the front brake. Are you suggesting the same for the rear? Jerry

Gday Jerry, my lever measured 80mm between the centre of the splined end to the centre of the cable nipple notch. I assume your linings are ok and your drum is not badly worn. I couldn't beleive how much difference this lever made to my brake. After I tried the longer one my mate wanted some for his 250 and 360 mk7's but because we didn't have any more genuine long bully ones so we had a few lengthened which worked well except all the welded ones eventually broke. If you would like a lend just to try I can pull the one off mine and send it to you as long as I get it back before CD7 as I think we might go up for it.
As for the rear I haven't tried that but I would amagine it would work just as well.
Back in the old days I used to get some soft competition car lining material bonded oversize to my brake shoes then set the shoes up on the backing plate with a coke can shim wrapped around the cam and spin it in the lathe and machine the lining material off untill the shoes were size for size with the brake drum, then remove the shim material giving you much more shoe contact with the drum. This is far more effective than when they radius grind the shoes separately. Gary Flood showed me how to do this when I bought my first two Bully's off Bert back in 1974.

An oxymoron? Better than Ossa brakes anyway, which aren't so much as brakes as they are a mild retardation.
