Title: Aussie Motorcycle Clubs :- Oldest
Post by: Hoony on March 18, 2010, 04:56:41 pm
Thinking about going to My club tonight, not that active these days but its my 31st year as a member and it got me thinking what is the oldest continual running club in Australia?

my club The "Dandenong Motorcycle Club" or DMCC started in 1931 and will celebrate it's 80th year next July.

considering the ACUV (now MAV) started in 1928 i think the DMCC may be one of the oldest in Vic (not sure when they affiliated with ACUV) so lets just stick to club formation.

my quote  ;D  on old oz mx tracks
Attended SummerCross last night up at Coastal Motorcycle Club,Henderson Park Perth the club was Incorporated in 1919 and first main mx event was in 1920.
Whilst browsing through the perpetual trophies I came across the club Champion/High Points and read the names of  P Hopwood 76/77 and Rod Gilchrist in 2000 and 2002 .
These are two of VMXWA  A Grade riders.
Leisk was on the same trophy.  ;D
cheers

The oldest club in Australia would have to be the Ulysses Club.
Average age would have to be at least late 60's which should easily make them the oldest.  :P :P

My original club, Sydneys Annandale-Leichhardt was formed in 1908 making it 102 years old this year. I reckon it'd be one of the oldest, if not the oldest in Australia. Arch rival St George club kicked off in 1915.

Not as old as others already mentioned but for interest sake. Bankstown Canterbury MCC formed in 1947, merged with a dying Wiley Park MCC in 1951 becoming Bankstown Wiley Park MCC, was a dominant club on Short Circuit until the 80's. Still running, I think.

For what it's worth, Bendigo Motorcycle Club was formed in 1925, and has been at Ravenswood recreation reserve since 1933, and is still going strong.

Tomorrow (14th August 2013) will be the 90th Anniversary of the formation of the Western Australian AJS Motorcycle Club. A meeting had been called prior to this inauguration by Mr M. Leverington and 33 people attended, all riders of A.J.S. motorcycles. There was sufficient interest to lead to the club being formed on 14th August 1923. Interestingly MWA (then W.A.M.C.A.) had only just held their initial meeting on 31st July 1923 at the Bohemia Hotel (wherever that was), AJS joining the association at its second meeting. Happy Birthday AJS MCC. (Paul Church)

Sorry Folks, Think i'm gonna top that by the looks. Our club [MOMCC] Manawatu Orion [in nz this is] had its 100th in 2011 which [just looking it up] is the last time i rode--must do something about that. But i see they say the Nelson Club is older than that--Golly Gosh. Hope there's lots of pics that might find their way onto the internet from early days of 'all' these clubs--be a great to see.

I went to the Canterbury clubs 100th anniversary in Christchurch in 2010. I seem to recall that the oldest Aussie club might have been my old club, Annandale -Leichardt in Sydney, formed in 1908 making it 105 years old. In the early to mid seventies it and Willoughby were the strongest motocross clubs in NSW. They're both just shadows of their former greatness today.

Gotta love people that can take the piss out of themselves ;) :)

Merrylands District MCC started circa1947.  Threw in the towel in the '70s. We still get together what's left of us each November at Smithfield RSL.  Most members competed in all phases of M.C. sport.

It would be interesting to know who would be the oldest rider still competing in m.c. sport with the longest running club, having continuous membership with that club.

 Cheery cheers to all. pancho.

Often off line but hopefully rarely "out 'o lne"!

Not sure if you'd count on the membership as the over 65 club members would probably be "Life Members" and don't belong to VMX only clubs.
Plenty of older riders in T&E and the Vinduro clubs though  :)
Merry Christmas young Pancho  :D  :-*  ;)

Thanks! VMX247. I will not be racing probably till maybe the annual Charity meet at Nepean Aug '14 due to a couple of medical setbacks, A pinched nerve in the neck plus dramatic eye surgery in January. Damn! I'm only 76, I want to datch up to Ron Beaver, 83 and still goin' like a rocket!  By the way, those 40 plus year olds do get checked for Glaucoma! No history in my family till me!  cheers!

Cessnock Motorcycle Club helds its 90th Anniversary dinner last month. The club was started in 1923. They still compete every year for perpetual trophies that go back a long way.

The oldest rider still competing is probably Don Newell.  The club he is a member of Brisbane MCC have also been around for a while.  They were among the original clubs that made up ACU of Qld. There is a 75 year badge I'm got somewhere, so 100 years must be under 10 years away.

I think you'll find that Bill Watson from WA is a bit older than Don. I think Bill's 84 but Brian Watto will fill us in with the correct info or Col Metcher will know from his Super Senior files.

I think Don Newell has the longest continuous ACU licence, first got it at 15 and has held it every year since....so I was informed.

Thats one way to tell, provided L.C.Bs. can check records of comp. licences history, I fear that like a lot of other record keeping since everything is on computer now most hard copy stuff has been destroyed.
cheers pancho.
