not a bad buy for $3K (even if it is green)
-
he only wanted 1500 for it and i nearly bought it then and there but same old story my son want a fender strat for christmas and i couldnt talk him into a kx 500 he said dad im only 11 ,so you have to start some were ;)
-
i'm with hoony, $3K is a good (fantastic) price. Some Jap 490-500's (race ready) can reach 3500-5000 in peak season. If I had concentrated more on eBay during that month, then I would have been in for this one.
-
Yep on the money Cammos.
try and get a race ready bike (let alone a big bore) for less than $3000. even a starter bike around $1000 will need probably another $2K put into it for the serious Racer (tyres, chain & sprockets engine freshen up, shock & forks rebuild, bearings and linkages, fittings etc it all adds up). if you have never added up all the bits to get it one the track it is surprising, if you want it to look the goods as well that's another story.
Disclaimer :- Note, i said Serious racer (one who wants to win not just compete)
-
I was having a good look at that one too...............
And would have had a go at $1500 but for me, too much at $3k.
Hopefully it gets out in the dirt often. ;D

GOOD DEAL, WISH I HAD THE LOOT TO BID :'(

Just wandering around looking at stuff this morning and I noticed that this bike has a 2 ring piston.
Does anyone know the guy that sold it? I'm interested as to what's in there.............
-
OK, for all of you who were interested in this bike, this is the story. A client of mine purchased the bike from ebay and had it sent to my shop for a quick check over, the bike left the shop in the same plastics as bought with (they are going to be replaced down the track) and this is what was done to it: new tyres front & rear, shock serviced and re-gassed, footpegs repaired, jetting cleaned up and a few minor problems rectified, for a total of $650 in parts & labor. The bike will have it's first outing this weekend at a club race day in a nearby town. Not a bad end result and once the cosmetics are done will be a decent bike.
Cheers,
K

Hey Mick, if you ever pull the top end off, let me know what's in there. ;D
-
Got another one to do soon, it's at the shop but we haven't opened it up yet. I will let you know what I find. What is it you specificlly want to know Tony?
Cheers,
K

Simply what sort of piston is in there if it's not OEM. This eBay one had a 2 ring piston, which indicates a later model one was fitted. But all reports I've heard say that although a late piston physically fits in the hole, the squish is all wrong.
The reason I ask is that stock pistons are almost non-existant anymore. I've got an aftermarket piston kit for mine and will probably sleeve the barrel, but I still hope that I'll find a NOS piston for under $100.00 one day. ;D
-
tony that othe kx that was on the other day (ebay) was supposed to have a nos piston in it and that was sleeved may be you can ask him / he may be able to help you ,his number was on his add
-
tony the pistons and rings are the same except the squish is differant the early pistons were dome topped single ring the later were flat top twin ring the rings from a twin ring piston fit the single ring piston
i know this cause i have both some guys do run later pistons in 83 84 85 kx 500 engines
they seem to go ok but i think they would be down on compression although they feel ok on kickstart
the upside is no pinging ;D
-
That's what I'm after. First hand info.
Thanks buddy. A bit less compression, and horsepower, in these engines is no real problem to us mere mortals who can't use all the power anyway.
That's good news and means I can get my barrel re-nikasiled and stay as close to stock as possible. ;D
For sale, cheapo aftermarket piston to suit 84 KX500...........

Sorting squish is a half hour job absoutely NOTHING to worry about.Besides flattops are the go.

Might not be for you. ;D
At least I know now that I can use later pistons with confidence. Thanks gentlemen.
