Title: Best Looking Flattracker of all time. Vote.
Post by: mx250 on December 02, 2007, 10:13:00 pm
Okay guys I've got withdrawal symtoms and I need some motorcycling eye candy. We've done 'Best Looking MX'er of all time' and it was unanimously agreed that the Montesa '77 VB360 was crowned the 'Best Looking MX'er of all time' ;) ;D
(http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l187/mx250a/IMAGE126.jpg) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

So now we must decide the 'Best Looking Flattracker of all time'.

My nomination is.............

Don't you just love that minimalist spartan functional look  8). And being a Yammy you just know it fast and reliable  ;)

(I have no affiliation of any kind with the nomination. Indeed I can't remember where I stole the piccy from  ::).)

Here some details which is just as sweet as the overall shot.

Ooopps. Don't look too closely at the engine mount welds  :o ::) :P

Now play nice boys :-*. This is an opportunity for those of a 'Hardly Rideable' persuasion who got very confused in associating HD's Big Twins and MX'er in the same sentence  ::) to nominate some very desirable minimalist and functional bad arsed HD's  ;D

P.S. Same rules as before; nominations only accepted when supported by pretty pixies of the subject - I need my fix  :P

Nah you can do better than that, are we going down the original racer lines or the Down and dirty looking ? inc moderns ? should be posting best per period ?

cant go past my 74 Boss Yza for Period metallic paint work, all hand pin stripes and lettering ....  sweet  ;)

Heaps  of other bikes to post but still says folder full  :'(

It must seem that I'm always nominating one of Alan Jonses bikes every time some brings up one of these "best looking" contests. Anyone who's ever been to his shed or to the races and actually closely checked out his bikes will agree that they are meticulously built with not a thing out of place. Even though all of them are quick, he's a bit of a show pony and the bikes are built with a show hot rod eye for detail. The bike below is pictured while it was under construction but it's now finished. It's a Trackmaster powered by a 90hp 860cc Nourish Weslake twin. It's got the usual Ceriani forks, Barnes quick change rear hub and all of the good stuff and looks even nicer in the flesh.

Bloody Monty's. I had a '77 250, it had 12 gears! 6 forward and 6 neutral. And whats with the kickstarter? You are better off laying down beside the bike to use the kicker properly  :D I must say it handled well and went hard. Don't miss it though! Too bad i cant put anything decent into this thread as im an mxer but shall enjoy the pics anyways

OK guys, just increased the photo folder limit, so you should be able to attach more photos. However that's probably the last increase for a while, so if possible host your photos elsewhere and just link them in.

Mate i have trouble posting pics, video  ::)

The YZ's in the musem so i wont be riding it, got lots of toys for that.

If its period correct you can run it, the USA is looser on what they call sportman class etc they allow a lot of extras after 75 if it not going to make it faster.

All post 72 will have rear disks, and a spooler front, but mags are only really seen on a few bikes, personal taste, but not many guys like them for obvious reason they look shit.

mostly the Street tracker guys run them on XS 650 stuff.  Even the modern still like the VM3.5 rims and spokes.

hey you have to host them on U tube . I'm lookin at ridin a few meets at Broadford next year and there will only be a couple of classes ,Pre 90 and capacity so i can run anything up to 500cc so i might build something out of the bits in the shed and maybe a IT465 engine  should be fun.

I been thinking of borrowing the My Sc 500's motor and sticking it in a champion frame i have for a MX 360 , i just cant figure out if it will mount straight up or not.  Im going to ride bikes this year i like not that are fast, Fun in 08 is doing to be the catch cry, i got a champion DT1 wont right any records but i just think its a sexy looking bike for coozing around on ( unless i start to look into spacer plates and doing the gorden jennings on it.
Where is the NAtional this year and the dates ?
they are listing our meets so i hope i can come over or do a broadford meet with you this year, time permitting.

whats the deal with mag wheels can you run them in oz ? Are they any good.
If they are period I guess you could run them.

I don't know the details of the Yammy but I'm guessing they are late '70's XS650 19in front wheels, the rear wheel having been adapted for sprocket.

The 'mags' of the period were generally heavier than spoked wheels but were stronger laterally.

Heavier wheels would effect the 'spin up' and acceleration and would effect 'tip in', generally slow the responce to rider steering inputs and also effect suspension responsiveness.

The laterally stronger wheel would give a more precise 'feel' and would probably be an advantage once the bike is laid over and sliding.

All in all, technically and in performance a fairly even argument as indictated by Freaky.

.. :D You'd have to ask Kenny Snr about that one..he stated these immortal words after winning the AMA title.."they don't pay me enough to ride that thing"  :o the frame was indeed a Champion design by Doug Schwerma.
Whilst it might have been quite animal and awesome the fact is he only barely won the series from Jay Springsteen and Corky Keener on this bike. It was an utter pig to get off the line which meant he always had to come from behind the pack and usually he did it around the outside!

Yeah Vandy i like that it would be fun to ride ,I rode my sons yz100 at broadford in the 125 races and while underpowered it loved goin around corners where on my 400 it is a arm wrestle to get it around.  Also firko what does jones's bike sound like those gold rocket launchers  they look awesome?. Is there anywhere at raymond terrace to get these bikes out for a run ?.

I saw Randy Mamola do a half time demo on the TZ750 dirt tracker at Ascot before they pulled it down in the eighties and he was amazing. He made even that beast look rideable.
Alan hasn't fired the Flat tracker yet Hilly. Although it's finished he's found an ignition problem and is waiting on parts to come from England. If there is a Dirt Track session at CD5 he's bringing it along with the rest of his little collection.

Firko i bet jones's ignition problem is the "interspan" magic box huh, those bloody things always play up and the batteries don't last.

Hilly i haven't got a site to host my CR in dirt track form, if i send you a pic can you host it for me ? i could post it direct but want to save the sites limit to help out our esteemed WEB-Meister !

Champion framed Yamaha 350 Twin From what i remember this is a 74 Rd 350, it has Dg heads and all sort of stuff in the cases, RD400 close ratio box, RZ reeds & Custom built carbs and pipes,  i just love the look of the heads and the pipes look too kewl.

One word describes it all for me " pert" and dont it look like it !  :o

i got the guard and tank sets on bikes if you wanna pay to make up a mould, other wise gp glass or omars out the states, but youll need  $400,

also what frame you have ? if its not a champion or  trackmaster style youll need to mod the tail hoop or glass and mix the tank to suit the centre bar.

I think the XT/TT frame took the Star Racer tanks, which are a little squarer looking, i got a vintage purple one here if you need the tunnel dimesions, not sure how you would go getting it made guess its 2 halfs but you can get them out the states new for that model for about $250 ? i think but dont quote me as i haven asked about that particular model.   The sStar racer has the matching rear for that model too might just need triming for the XT.

Gp glass is cheaper but there sites down ATM, but you can still see them on Omars, he has good pics, remember though they come in white gel not painted.

this should fit your beast http://www.omarsdtr.com/dt500champ.html

or surf the others http://www.omarsdtr.com/dtXR500.html

timbo i'd run a set of glass from them if you ever find them are the side plates in the seat section ? i got some champions here with no spare glass so id love to get some rear up at least for spare rather than moulding of my good one and risk injury to em :O)  keep me in the loop big guy !

Will locate and yes the side plates are connected to the seat section. Around 1970/73 era flat squared off tank look type.
Had a friend do the dirty work. I don't know shit from clay about Fglass! Except putting Methanol in a Ducati tank makes for some really "interesting " entertainment.......
