its most likely a DT shock from late 70's.

Thanks Moto M. The bike is on te waiting list for resto. I will do some more measurements / research when it gets a bit closer, but will keep this fact in mind. Thanks again.

thanks but no wrong type
-
I got one in an old frame. #509 mxb or yz c 250 . it looks like it needs resto .
-
I'm still looking for one. If it's a YZ250C the shock should be close to 640mm from the very end of the threaded section to the centre of the pivot point.
Is the chrome on the shaft cactus?

I'll have a closer look - most likely

jim - sorry to rub it in but I lucked into getting a YZ360B 4.2 kg spring for $24 recently on US Ebay - NOS even. Very rare.
Gents - dont know whether this will help but Works Performance make an MXB shock that fits the YZB - is the C much different?
"Shock is a Steel Gasser w/triple rate springs, threaded pre-load, 16 position adjustable rebound damping and 1/2 inch length adjustable mounting eye (RHA) @ $534" This was October 09. Mate bought one for his YZB and fitted up pretty easy. I have the contact email address if you need.
Sorry if it doesn't but hope it helps?

Thanks Rossco for the info, at first glance the price is too steep for me, at second glance as well ;D
I suppose when you think about it you're getting an adjustable shock that doesn't need the shaft rechromed. Then again, if I had adjustable suspension people would expect me to go faster and that just isn't going to happen.
The other prob is that the B model shock was 20mm shorter (or thereabouts).
-
Hey Rosco, has your mate ridden the bike yet?, reason I ask is that I want to put a decent shock in my YZB/OW 25 replica that I'm building. I bought a set of WORK's shocks for my YZ125A and they are awesome!!! Cheers John.
-
Mainy - I understand where you are coming from - baulking a bit at $1100 for an Ohlins for my 83 >:(
yes - apparently there is about 1 inch difference between the 3 but apaprently the MXB and YZC shock was the same and fits backwards into the B - obviously wouldn't go the other way - this is an MXB shock so is slightly longer.
John - Rod has ridden it only the once and at a grass track - this weekend he heads to Collie (proper and fairly rough track) so will report back when I hear from him.
Must admit I am interested in your YZB/OW25 replica - could you PM me what you are up to there as I don't want to hijack this thread?
cheers

Jim - I also have a YZB air shock (unknown origin or make) - it won't hold pressure at the moment and I can't get a hold of Thor Lawson to get him to have a look. Don't know whether that would help you at all?
cheers

cheers mate,
any idea on how long they are? that seems to be the only difference between the models. The shock I've got already measures 620mm from the centre of the pivot to the very end of the thread. I need one that's closer to 640mm
Cheers

Interesting , I never knew that there was such a difference between those first cantilever shocks.
the #509 shock is 640mm
-
509 is 250C ?
-
Here's some part numbers for the shock shafts. The shaft is the important one, as its where the difference in length comes from.
MX250B:
509-22481-01
YZ250B:
509-22481-01
YZ125C:
509-22481-01
YZ250C:
509-22481-02
YZ125X:
509-22481-02
So yes, they're all 509 part numbers, but they're not all the same.

This seller is usually pretty good to deal with. Make him an offer on just the shock ;)

Hey Mainline,
Did you end up finding a shock?
-
Davy - initial reports back on the WP (works) shock are - much better than the stock unit in all areas. No more bottoiming etc as previous. Drop "Red Alert" on the forum a line and chat with him about it.
cheers

Mainline, I'm thinking of breaking up this 125c, it has the shock in it , (not sure of condition but), do you guys need them to be race ready or are you just after the parts or to rebuild > i have no idea about this one till i drag it out and pull the bits i want, and take a look under the tank....
-
Actually i can see it in the pics, so short answer is it has the shock mainline
-
ah yes, but that's a 125c shock, whereas i was after a 125X shock, or 250C etc....
the 125X shock is about 20mm longer than the 125C unit. The one you have should be the same as those on a 250B etc... albeit with different spring rates. Thanks though.
