Your right these were quite rare even in their day, well cetainly in Victoria anyway. I did have one for a while and I also had a 250 of the same year 76 I think. The 250 was very fast but couldn't keep big ends in it. The 360 was a nice bike to ride. Come to think of it I won a 3 hour pony express at Ballarat on it.

Yeah. It looks like a VA ('75). 465 produced and the few that I've seen have been in pretty cond. I reckon' they're as sexy as hell!
Were you from around these parts Stan (Ballarat)?
-
Yes 414 I sent you quite a few pictures for your old website.
Stan.
-
Oh. Now I know who you are (Stan?) :-X
-
Cool. Are you still going to get the website up and running again cause I still have some Monty photo's? Also have a look at the photo I put on mcmuffins "put your bike in a hat" thread.

Stan is that your bike on VMX #5 or do you have one the same? Cheers Jerry

Gday Jerry, yes that is my bike.
regards Stan.

That's a fairly original VA. I don't think the guards are original. It will be interesting to see what it goes for.
Stan, if you couldn't keep big ends in the 250 the 360 would be no better - it's the same bottom end as far as I know. Unless you were wringing it's neck to get the last drop of performance. I would surmise that it was a ported motor. Monties , and euro MXers, were renowned for bottom end and mid range to deal with deep sand, mud and tight circuits typical of Europe at the time.
Did you notice the crank mounted clutch - make a worthwhile addition to the Monty museum ;) ;D.

Gday Graeme, the 250 I had was a 76 model and the 360 was a 75 model. The 76 250 were rare here in Victoria as I never saw another one after Lyall got the one for me. It used to do a big end if not every meeting well every other at least. But It was very fast std. There was no porting done that I could remember but Lyall always looked after the motor as part of the sponsorship deal. I tried to race the big bikes on it all year but only did well when it actually finished a race.

Like the pic Stan. I've got a lot of material together for the site but like a lot of things, these things happen in spurts. It will jast 'appear' one day (the site). ;)

Look forward to the new site. That pic is me ready to ride Mark Christians VB, Peter Christian on Clyde Tuckers YZ and Mark Christian beside him then Guy Lampard on a Bultaco Mk 9. I think Clyde Tucker out of shot was riding Peters VB.

Yes Jerry

AHA! Cheers Jerry AKA Jerry

The lower forklegs look correct, but the tubes should be sticking up thru the top crown about 63mm.
The VA360 had the same bottom end as the VB's. Different crank wheels, rod and main bearings than the 250.
In over 35 years, I never had a 250's bottom end go south. Are you guy's running nitro? ???
-
Hi Cappra,
did you have a 76 model 250? If so how did you stop the big end problem that I had from the day I picked it up new. Lyall couldn't fix it how did you fix it?
Stan.
-
Stan,
I had a VA 360. (still have it!) When I had problems with the crank mounted clutch,
I yanked the motor out (until the fix came thru) and installed a 250, that I raced for almost 6
months. Never had any problems with the big ends. We set them up stock by the book. We used
Belray oil mixed at 32 to 1. I worked at the Montesa dealer for five years and I cannot recall any
bigend failures in all that time! If the rod was not centered correctly or the piston shims were not
correct, the rod could shift to the right or left and catch the edge of the crankwheel and then all hell
could break loose! but that is something we alway's checked carefully when rebuilding.

ive got one of these beasts..not as clean but good for its age...it still has clutch on crank i need to pull motor down for new mains any secrets on pulling it apart..eg. reverse threads
-
Hi K2000X, I am probably not much help as it would be more than 30 years since I have has one of these apart. I am a bit envious as these are getting very rare.

As far as I'm aware, just the flywheel and the sprocket nut should have reverse threads. When you split the cases, do it with the ignition side down (clutch side up). All the gears will sit nicely in the RHS case that way.
-
What "all things 414" say's is correct. Nice that the primary gear is splined! Just pay attention to all
the various transmission shims. The crankshaft tends to remain in the left side case for some reason as well.

$3050 8). A pretty good price for unrestored - seems it rarity was acknowledged.

Talking about a75/76 i had one of each 250cc i raced 75 in 1975 and 76 in 1976 in expert class always gave them a hard time but they never let me down used to finish in top 5 all the time.I still have the montesa manual issued with the 76 bike never put a piston or big end in,in fact never had the motor apart in the whole season what great bike's.

Gday montman,
Yeah mine was a 76 250 but although it was very fast I never had a good run with it at all. I had a 250 in 74 and apart from the handling it was a very reliable bike. I sold and raced VB's and VE's from 77 on and had very little mechanical trouble at all. My favourite was a 78 VB 250 5 speed with a 360 head, barrel, carb and pipe.
I guess I must have had a lemon in 76, maybe I didn't ride it fast enough.
Cheers Stan.

Hi stan i think you must have had a LEMON,my mate had a 360 which had a hand made up and over pipe on it the first we had seen i can remember riding it wow an instant wheely machine i always rode 250's untill the 414ve came out then rode both class untill end of 1980 very bad crash right leg nearly amputated(ouch) 18 months in full plaster by that time montesa had gone over to honda(shame)but i had orderd one of the first water cooled honda 250 bikes to come in the country just before crash had to cancel it dealer not impressed. The 4 speed box on 414's suited my style of riding(lazy)did not like to go up and down the box all the time, the monts used to rev and rev where as other make's that i tired/borrowed seemed to peak off.where's all the other monty nuts?

I'm sure they are out there waiting for someone to say something that doesn't add up then they seem to surface. ;D
