While we are on the stats. How many bikes do you have. I started out a few years ago just saying to my wife I only need one. Now I have nine in various states of repair.Probably not that many compared to most of you guys. Why do we need so many?
-
I am actually embarrased to say on this one but I dont have a single vmxer.
-
I started out 10 years ago and quickly gathered about 6 or 7 projects but soon discovered I couldnt afford to do it. So I sold them all plus my DR750 Motard project (should have kept that one!) and stayed with just one for a while. Now I have three - an 05 YZ125, a 75 RM125 and a 1980 IT175G. That's all I can afford to run!!
But if money were no object... it'd be a very different story.
-
weeeellllll, I bought a YZ125f as a project, then that was taking too long and I was keen to go riding, so Rusty had a PE175 that was ready to go, so I bought that as a fill-in, then this BSA thing came along so I had to buy that, then a YZ125C project turned up for the right price so that got added to the collection.
Now I have to figure out how I'm going to wheel two complete bikes from the garage that weren't there before, plus negotiate the purchase of a registered trail bike cause there's really good riding to be had 15 mins from where I live.
-

2 X VF 414's
VR
H7 250
YZ 465 H
2000 YZ 250
They're all runners and I'm happy to say that I don't have any projects on the go (although I have to bolt some bits to the VR which I just never seem to be able to do!) I want to keep it that way. I'd do up a VE or a VG 414 if I could find one but that's it.
I said a while ago that I want to keep the collection at 6 but I dont think that's gunna happen. If I do buy something it's gunna have to be a finished item..... ;)

hey brad, cz will the honda engine, is neat bike, l like that.
-
I have 3+ bikes......1994 CT110 Postie (local commuter machine), 1974 MX250A (just re built, set up as dirt track racer but will soon also have a spare rear wheel for VMX, making it a bike with 2 purposes) 2000 DRZ400E (set up as dirt tracker but also have spare front and rear MX wheels and Super Moto set up, so is a bike with many purposes...dirt track, grass track, motard, road riding, enduro, trail riding etc). I dream of more bikes but I wake up to myself and realize I wouldn't have time for too many more!

Have about 10 VMX bikes and a couple of Harleys, Matchless and Ducati or two.
My fetish is the performance parts, I would sell my sister into a whorehouse for a decent set of Simons forks.
-
It would take him 3 or 4 days to list whats in his Alladdins cave and then he would forget half of it!. It would be quicker to get the auditors in...... or the Tax man!!! ;D

I think Bill has a couple of fetish's as well Mark.

Hey Marc if you didnt keep spending your money on holidays for the trophy wife, you could have had those UDX60's-give yourself a double uppercut! ;)

Are you guys all rich, divorced and live on a large property with "mega" sheds or have understanding wives, some bikes in lounge rooms and have a out of whack financial plan???!!!
-
Where's TM Bill? :D
Still bloody counting :D
The reality is i probably only have about 30 going bikes and probably double that in projects ::)
-
Are you guys all rich, divorced and live on a large property with "mega" sheds or have understanding wives, some bikes in lounge rooms and have a out of whack financial plan???!!!
Definetly NOT rich :) divorced yes but lined up to get hitched again ;D average house in town with no garage :o However very large shed at work 8)
Girlfriend understands bikes were here first ;) Occasional bike in lounge :D
Financial plan keep borrowing and over insuring myself , marry a woman a decade younger than me (so she can keep working when iv'e had enough :)and if that fails i will have spent 30 years bringing up 4 girls who cant wait to keep me in my old age ;)
-
Definetly NOT rich :)
Anymore.............. :D :D
btw I don't remember quoting on your upcoming wedding, Bill............ ;)
-
Motoman, if I didn't have all my bikes and bits maybe I would have a few extra $ but I wouldn't have a life! The old bikes are my life and the most annoying part is I have very little space. Most of the bikes remain tucked away up under the house. I'll never be nor have I ever been rich, I survive on about the same money as social security and much less in the winter. To have shed where I had space between them or at least be able to view them without a major drama would be Utopia ;)
-
Are you guys all rich, divorced and live on a large property with "mega" sheds or have understanding wives, some bikes in lounge rooms and have a out of whack financial plan???!!!
yep and want more :P :P :P
I went searching for the bikes owned thread which is similar to this one and found another
era/age thread...few bikes may have moved on since.

Yeah, I hear you! :) I remember seeing some TV programs highlighting someone like Jeremy MaGrath or ex road racers for instance, who have special built garages full of their old and new bikes, decked out with checked flag vinyl flooring, lounge, helmets from the years lined up on a shelf, a bar perhaps and I would dream of having that one day. Not likely going to happen for me living in a crowded Sydney Beach suburb though! My wife is understanding as long as the bikes are out of sight when they are not being worked on. At the end of the day I can't complain and to be able to spend the amount of money I do racing at my age, (closer to 100 than to zero) and not hear complaints about going away on weekends, is pretty good. I will still dream though and there is still a possibilty another machine might "squeeze" it's way into my humble shed one day! I certainly have a few models I am (dreaming of) considering!!

I have a bit of a minibike thing,xr75ko,k1,k2 & 77 5 speeder,xl70,z50j x2,70 dax x 2,deltek rockhopper,cr125m & 250m,cr80ra x 2,xl100,xl75 plus 1/2 dozen old shitters out the back
-
My wife is understanding as long as the bikes are out of sight when they are not being worked on.
Nah thats not understanding, understanding is she is cleaning the bike and unloading the trailer while you grab a beer at the end of a hard ride.
Now i am always a little surprised how little priority during the house purchase and construction phase is given to the garage, so much time is wasted designing kitchens where a good garage and a book shelf in the shitter is all you really need.

YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING 'BOUT! That's the sort of garage I want!
As far as understanding woman, the way to go would be one who races as well and have your kids clean the bikes!

No, no, sort of, yes, no, yes.

Now who's the rich one?? ;D

ive only got 6 maicos (today) ::)
Apparently that doesn't make you a real enthusiast mate......
-
Firko, It's a roof over my head. I am lucky to live where I do for sure. If I were even allowed to sell I would build my dream shed, have my own track and have a bike for every day of the year. I said my wife is "somewhat" understanding. She and my kid have their own agenda so we live near the beach. I accept what I can get and no hassles for going off racing and spending money (within reason) on bikes with no bitching makes for a minimal stress home life. Note: see new post....Seperation Sale. I've heard of these before

Ok well I have 10 but 11 if I were to include my little bro's kx80 which he won't ride :( one crash is all it takes some people he just doesn't get it I spose it isn't his thing all my life I have been waiting to ride that pe400 that was in the shed or under a tree.
I have 5 pe's one is a 250 the others 400's but they are the one bike I love if I could only have one sort I'd have as many as I can of those PE400's and if one comes up at a reasonable price I can't help myself I am one short to have one set for motocross I have three to do up original a spare that is going to be a registered enduro beast. I can see my self easily having 20 PE's in the not to distant future.
Rusty when you do your clean up make sure to PM me ;)

I had a cull a couple of years ago and got down to under 40, but I think they must breed as the the number is back up over 50 again. There are a couple more in the pipeline, possibly an early model AG175 Yamaha this weekend, plus an IT175, some AG100s and Dt100s that I just have to get time to go and pickup.
Currently there are 13 assorted XT/TT/SR500 Yamaha, plus about 6 or so early 70's 2 stoke Yamaha trailies, a dozen or so 1960/early 1970's Hondas, a coulpe of Bultaco Sherpas, 2 Cossacks and an assortment of other mainly japanses dirt dikes.

michael pe400 makes a great mx bike ;)
there was also a 50s something maico with no eng for $195 :o

Perhaps I will give the 400x a go because it is something special motor wise. ;)

I rode Harvey Birdmans PE400 at Connondale a few years back. It hooked up better out of the corners and was every bit as quick as my RM400 maybe even a little quicker ;)

better get a montesa bmx bike then
Yup. You'll be top of the heap then......
-
Perhaps I will give the 400x a go because it is something special motor wise. ;)
motor is good and Suzuki had the chassis well worked out, standard shocks were ugly even from day 1. I had T and X, both good.

A friend of mine reckons if some how there was a law about how many bikes one man needs then there would be a lot more bikes around for more people to become involved in the sport. He reckons 2 x MX, 2 x Enduro, 2 x Trials etc per man is enough. I dont know about a "law" (think he was joking!) but maybe he has a point. Nothing worse than seeing some of these "enthusiasts" in the states in VMX with their collection of 27 RM 250A"s. Talk about selfish! I wonder at what point does a collector become an obsessive and in need of psychiatric care. Cheers Jerry
-
yeah its pretty much common knowledge that the PE400 makes a better mx engine than the RM400. if you got a spare PE400 frosty just go for it, as others say, the PE400 makes a great mx bike, just gotta change the cosmetics, eg different rear fender, remove lights etc and there you have a mx bike and dont have to go and buy another bike. If you dont chop the rear frame loop off, you can always change it back to a PE if you want.
-
I agree Walter no doubt people pay top dollar for bikes and it certainly is their right to aquire and do whatever they like with them. But that is not my friends point. He believes that there a lot of bikes tied up in peoples collections that could otherwise be owned by others and get the numbers up at races. Cheers Jerry
-
better get a montesa bmx bike then
Yup. You'll be top of the heap then......
Unfortunately it would be the BMX heap not VMX ::) ;D.
-
I am always reluctant to post into a thread like this, because there seems to be guys who want to criticise about the number of bikes that some people have, saying that they are holding back VMX racing by hoarding up all the bikes. But usually the guys who do the whinging are those who only want to pay very little money for something desirable or rare . I live in an area where the vintage scene hasn't really taken off yet. Most of the bikes that I have aquired would have otherwise been dumped or thrashed to death on saltpans by blokes who just wanted a cheap scrub basher. But I am now starting to get a lot of enquiries from younger guys who watch us race in our evolution class at modern meetings. I intend on assembling some of the bikes that I have "hoarded" over the years, to sell to these younger guys and get some more bums on seats .
-
sorry to butt in but I disagree also Jerry.
Not every collection is built up of bikes purchased at high prices in restored condition. There are still oodles of old bikes and basket cases out there for taking at very reasonable prices. If they were not affordable then I wouldn't have much at all I'm afraid ;) the most I have ever paid for any dirtbike (even brand new) is $1800 but most of mine were under $500. Prices paid depends on what each individual can afford. I could sell 90% of my bikes but this would make absolutely no difference to the numbers that turn up at meetings. If you want to ride you'll find something that falls within your price range. I don't feel obsessive or in need of any psychiatric care. I'm an enthusiast and collecting and restoring or rebuilding bikes is my hobby. What 'a lot' of people don't see is the hundreds, sometimes thousands of hours of time, effort and $ put into these bikes. This time and effort doesn't even get considered in a sale, all the buyer see's is what's presented before him. Collectors are simply regular people who are very enthusiastic about their chosen hobby ;)
-
I was going to reply to Jerry but Doc and Mark have put it in a nutshell. I've seen that releasing bikes to allow more riders access is a load of old fooey. The reality is that it doesn't make any signicicant difference to entry numbers. Many guys who own decent collections of bikes are usually the first to offer their bikes to others to ride. Docs point that many of his bikes were absolute basket cases or a trailer full of parts rings true. 90% of my bikes are built from other peoples discarded shit or parts and wouldn't exist at all if not for blokes like Doc, myself and many others.
-
Collectors are simply regular people who are very enthusiastic about their chosen hobby ;)
The collecting aspect of VMX is an important part of it, it allows a lot of people involvement in the scene that for various reasons, time, old injuries etc would be lost to it if racing was the only activity on the menu. I think the people who want to race VMX can easily fiind bikes still, recently the cost of good bikes seems to be falling.

I will pass on your considered comments to my friend for review (I did advise him that it might open a Pandora's box!) However answer me this why do some folk insist on collecting multiple versions of the same bike? Cheers Jerry

Passion Jerry passion ;)
Also it makes good buisness sense, take as many of the same make and model as you can and you will be battling less people for parts on ebay etc :o
But mainly because other people are to miserable to stamp up the coin to buy them ;) i think you will find most people who collect bikes would be happy to move some on , but as has already been said people tend to want the finished product for the roach price ::)
When its a roach they want it for nothing , so along comes the collector who pays the asking price then hes branded a hoarder ???

We agree on that one Jerry. I've often wondered why someone would want any more than a couple of the same model. I get bored with more than a few of the same brand, let alone over 10 RM400 N/Ts as one well known punter has! I used to have a lot of Maicos but I was finding it all becoming the 'same old same old' so over the last few years have whittled the collection down to those Maicos that mean something to me and replaced them with specials and one offs that appeal to the inner hot rodder lurking within me.
To me and some other collectors close to my circle (those evil good 'ol boys) variety has taken precedence in our collections while other close mates (the equally evil Team Husky empire) concentrate on one particular brand. With the Good 'ol Boys injecting some unusual exotica not normally seen in Oz and the Husky lads doing almost faultless restos on their Swedish beauties it's all good for the overall future of our sport/hobby.
There's room for everyone from the low buck guy doing the best he can with his CT1 or budget Brit bike right through to the 490 Maico or CCM set. We're all mates tied together under the VMX umbrella at the end of the day.

Also it makes good buisness sense, take as many of the same make and model as you can and you will be battling less people for parts on ebay etc :o
[/quote]
Wow Bill you are really digging deep for excuses to buy more bikes now. ;D
I think some people will get hung up on a certain model and brand (TT500s), like people who only listen one music type or band.... I mean why do you need 35 Jethro Tull albums.
Personally my bikes are what consider iconic (often just to me) or represent an era, or it is one I always wanted as a kid (DR400T), but everyone has their own reasons.

Some people have multiples because they have their ride bikes as well as their garage queens or lounge room fixtures. I have 3 TM125's but they are all different, 1 is dirt track, 1 is mx and the other vinduro but all parts interchange which means I'm never short of a TM to ride even if I do blow up my fav. All the same model but all 3 have a different purpose. There's also the scenario that you buy a dunger or basket case to fix up and low and behold the motor is rooted..you hunt around for ages but no other suitable motor can be found so you buy another cheapie of the same with the parts you need to finish bike 1. Usually after this purchase a motor will turn up out of the blue and all of a sudden you have enough parts for 2 of the same so a second bike gets built. There are numerous reasons but to have 3 or more of the same is going a little over the top if infact none get ridden and they are all the same. Bottom line is I agree with Bill..it's all about passion and how many $ and how much time you have. Everyone is different but sometimes bargains are hard to resist even if you already the same item sitting at home. If I spend lots of time working on a bike I usually become a little attached to it also which makes it harder to sell as you rarely get the money back for the time and effort that you've put in.

Doc I don't think having three TM125s being used for different purposes or even having a couple more for spares is the reall worry here, what I, and I asume Jerry means is blokes who have a multitude of the same model in exactly the same trim. I recently spoke to a guy who restored an identical DT1 to mine and asked him what he was up to at the moment. Turns out he's restoring another, identical white tanked DT1 enduro. When I suggested that perhaps an RT1, CT1 or AT1 might be a better choice seeing that his DT1 is a perfect concourse example and would be difficult to improve on, he became silent and looked at me as if I'd farted in his face. When I then suggested that the new DT1 be an MX GYT version I got the same turned up top lip, not comprehending what I was on about. It's the same with the guy with 10 restored RM 400 Suzukis or the bloke we know with 28 XS650 Yamahas. Don't they get bored with the same old same old?
In the end, as long as folks are enjoying their hobby it's all good and really nobody elses concern what models or how many of them they have. Whatever turns you on.

If he gets the money, mine's going on the market.
(http://You wont be dissapointed and you are unlikely to find another.)
Well.....Mine's as good as his, and I know of about 4 or 5 others fully restored in NSW alone. They're scarse in restored condition but not particularly rare.

Enough of all that. What about the relationship between number of wives and number of bikes? Jerry

One would expect that the number of wives would reduce the number of bikes but generally that seems not to be the case, with second generation wives being more thoroughly selected for their tolerance to old dirt bikes, plus as women get slightly older they appreciate their bait is not as fresh and get more cool about things. ;)

At the moment my bikes are nagging me for new parts, attention, even a new 12x6 shed and that I'm not taking them out enough. At the same time Karen never nags, never tells me to slow down, has to wait to get new bathrooms' while the YZ125ABCCXXEG get a new house. And get this, she likes to lap score and has never told me I've drunken too much (even when I wish she would)
You tell me who sounds more like a wife ;) ;D

That Geoff's a passionate man alright. But XS650s? And who'd have thought they made that many of them?
74/75 TM/RMs would have made more sense to me, but hey, each to his own huh?
-
There is a fellow near colac that built a 1974 mx650 A motorcrosser, about 14 years ago, and he raced it at a few meeting. a very well made. and he still has it. looking at the bike it looks like a sc 500. but with a 650 twin.

You've gotta see the XS 650 collection Graeme. You're probably too young to remember but back in the late 60s/early 70s Yammy 650s were really popular. Lot's of folks who were comfortable with the traditional British twin bought them after Triumph/BSA started turning out woeful shit and eventually went broke.
The XS650 is probably the most modified of the early Japanese roadies, shitloads of them were (and still are) modified for dirt track and even motocross. Penriths Big Herbie Conlon has a few set up for dirt track, Edgar Phipps has the ex factory Shell framed machine ridden by Eddie Lawson and even our Walter has one in a Metisse frame. Once my Benelli is done I'll start gathering XS650 bits to assemble a dirt tracker based around the Trackmaster frame I recently bought from New York. It was going to be used for the Benelli but it's too rare to be chopped up as it was built for a Yammy 650. There's hardly a more bulletproof motorcycle engine ever made.

:o :o :o :o The old MX frame has the strength for the extra weight of the XS650 :o :o :o :o
I probably shouldn't be surprised, but I am :-[.
An interesting preposition. I would be sure interested in some pixies if you ever come across any Dave 8).

The ubiquitus XS650 is a mighty engine indeed. The largest collector clubs in the US, UK and Holland after the Harleys is in fact the XS650.
Interesting to note that though it contains one of the strongest gearboxes known to man- able to easily take double the standard horse power and more, the selector forks are the down fall as we have found out.
I was give 2.5 basket engines for bits recently and when I searchrd through I found 2 complete gear sets in very good condition but not 1 selection fork to be found!!
