WTB: DT125 or 175 engine (chances of finding a 125 are slim to none i know) to suit '78 dt.
may consider a good complete bottom end as thats most of my problem.
description: must be in reasonable order, needed a.s.a.p as the bike is my transport.
Location: Melbourne.
Price: negotiable (within Reason)

the prob with my engine seems to be the crank seal, i have a few seals here but only basic tools/no space etc..
and i really dont like touching gearbox's as i've had some bad luck in the past..
if theres anyone in melb who wants to earn a few bucks (or a couple of slabs?) i need these fitted.
or as above, need to find a replacement bottom end, or even complete motor.. pay a fair price either way,

Crank seals are under $50.
I have a Dt125/175 bottom end but they both need work. I think you need to bit the bullet and pay someone to fix the one you have, be easier and less painfull.

i have a few seals for it, im pretty sure i have the transmission seal. witch is what i said in my last post, just need them fitted, but
i'd prefer to find a bottom end with no probs, as i dont trust this one... because i dont need time/space/crank splitter, it might be cheaper.
judging by the feel of it i would almost think 1 or 2 bearings have somehow exited their cages in tiny pieces and that is the metal in the
bottom end..
if anyone could do it, i would pay them.. just not a bike shop (thats if they'd even do it anyway.. most wouldnt).
i'd probably even buy a complete bike at the right price. cheers, metalskin

Rod kits are $60
LAbour $300 ?
Postage $200 ?
Do you see where im going with this.. the parts are cheap. The tyranny of Postage and labour is what will kill you.

Sorry bloke - both my spare bottom ends need rod kits (at least).
how long do you reckon you can live without the bike? Post your engine up, I'll fit some new seals and bearings, post it back - could probably get it back this time next week?

thanks. i reckon it would be at least a week no matter where i get it done. if i cant find anyone local to do it for a decent price,
i might take up your offer. just out of interest, would gearbox/crank seals effect top end speed? cheers, metalskin.

Leaking seals will hurt top end as you're not getting the correct mixture or amount of charge, a 2stroke is uses the bottom end to effectively pump the mixture into the cylinder so any leak means loss of power

While you have it apart it adds about 30 mins to the time and about $50 in replacing all the bearings, Just do it , then worry about it again in another 30 years.

i just got quoted 2 to 3 hours labor, (@90hr) to pull it down for a quote.. i had to ask the guy,, you mean the whole job right??
no, he ment just to quote me and give me a pile of parts back if i dont want them to fix it. every place i rang, same old bs...
i've actually just found a cheap bottom end that is hopefully in good order, so i can probably have a go at rebuilding the original cases myself.

Any mechanic that takes two hours to remove a DT125 engine, and split the cases, isn't worth $90/hour.

I agree with Nathan,on that one.
But,jeeze $90 an hour?
I thought $70 an hour up this way was expensive,next time I'll be thankful.

I think I'll have to put my prices up.
You may be better off with another bottom end if yours has had rust run through it.
Changing the seals and mains would be a waste of time without doing the big end as well.
From what you've been saying though I'm not convinced the crank seals are the problem.
Try taking the flywheel cover off and spraying aerostart behind the flywheel while its running, if it revs up then it will be the seals.
Can't remember everthing you said on the other thread now, but...
If the plug oils up they rarely dry them selves out.
Any crap that came out in the oil would be from the gearbox, nothing to do with the engine
More likely fuel starvation of some sort.
