Title: HAd a guy offer me a 480cr 1982 - whats the go there ?
Post by: Freakshow on February 10, 2010, 02:19:18 pm
IF i do the read up on these am i right in the deal on the Honda CR480s: Great bikes, strong motors, decent handlers, decent suspension, parts are not the easiest to find but you should be able to get everything you need off of Ebay or other vintage sites.

There were two CR480s: 1982 and 1983.  The '82 had a strong hitting motor and it was a four speed.  The 1983 had a smoother motor with a 5 speed and adjustable front suspension (generally making it more desirable).

However, the 1983 480 had a habit of breaking its gearbox and it cannot be fixed unless you find another "donor" transmission that is good.  ( the transmission problem it will not shift into third gear as it breaks).

So does that mean If you want a CR480,  find a 1982  and upgrading with the 1983 forks if you can find them ?

IS this a PAss or Purchase ?  IM guessing next year our DT class will be pre 85 allpowers due to thining number ATM, so turning up at the right end of the period should be a blessing, my old pre 75's cant hack the pace.

Thoughts ? also price range ?

The '83 is a way different bike to the '82.. It has a different frame with better geometry and removable subframe, better seating position and safety seat. Better wheels with straight pull spokes, different suspension linkage ratio, improved suspention, etc.
It's a lot more than just an extra gear..

I would agree that there is a lot of difference between the 1982 and 1983. i have both and the rear suspension is a big improvement on the 83- incidentally the shock on the 83 is longer than the 82.

It was top dollar Chris but it would probably cost that and more to build it. The ones at DDR are going for that and they're rough up close.

I agree JohnnyO, always more expensive to build than to buy in 95 % of cases. but then most of the fun is in the build.

I have a pretty clean 82 480 and I have the advantage of owning a metal fabrication shop so saved a bit of money on some of the items, It cost me the following to rebuid an 480,

Purchase price was 1500 (1450 to much at the time!)
Sandblast frame 80.00
Powder coat (do my own but charge 70.00 per frame)
Powder coat hubs and brake backing plates (25.00 each including bead blast) 100.00
New rims and stainless steel spokes and fitting 900.00 (exel rims in this case)
re-bore and new piston kit 310.00
New gasket set (complete) 90.00
New crank seal and bearings/ gearbox bearings 180.00
New tyres, rim locks tubes 220.00
New plastics (couple of years back now) 300.00
New seat cover plus fit 100.00
New bars and gips 100.00
Air filter and other parts 200.00
Shock re-build and fork referb 250.00 (now have fitted new Ohlins 1200.00)
Brake shoes 90.00
Re-zinc all bolts and steel items 60.00
new chain and sprokets 220.00
Lots of time (over 80 hours)
Total cost 4770.00 but this is without and outside labour costs (biggest cost was the wheels so can save some money here if a bike has good ones)

Just to give you a general idea of costs

Shane

Wheels and stuff are good, tank is shitty as is the blue (83) seat and the frame seems to be very veru orange and the plastics very red. Kinda hurts your eyes to see the miss match.

Colours can make the bike go faster, you know......

How much you want to pay for something depends on what you want to do with it and how you want it to look when you are doing that.

Having grown up with no money for racing, I recognise that I have a long entrenched mindset about my bikes....as long as the suspension works and the engine runs, I don't care too much about the looks (a bit similar to my attitude towards my body).  Even now that I can afford a bit better in the looks department (there is life after kids), I still find it hard to part with the extra dollars that go towards making the bike look so good....and that is despite appreciating great looking machinery every time I see it.

Close you eyes, Freaky.  The colour sounds terrible, but the engine, exhaust etc looks great.

The '82 was a deep red and the '83 an orangy red..just paint the frame the deep red and it's all good.
