83 is arguably better 1 more gear I think and better suspension. But then there is the mighty 84 cr500???

The '83 has many changes including the frame and a 5 speed gearbox. It is a better bike.

John's right, the 83 is just a much better build bike, more like the 84 500, better (longer rear shock) better frame with removable rear sub frame, better gearbox (but a bit stand alone for parts).

Having said all that it will be a lot harder to find a good 83 than 82.

I ride my 82 a bit and do like the 4 speed but is a bit more old school than the 83 or 84, 84 is a great bike (more like a 250 to ride) but now getting very heavy on the older gearboxes.

its going to be a frame up build so its whats available 82 parts seem a bit easier to come by and i have the pe400 and 250 for trails and 08wr450 ,the rm465 and this will be more hang on for dear life thrills and im not that young and ......... or balls of steel to take them off a 20 foot jump  :o,hospital food is not that crash hot ,and i did choose the 465 4 speed as its a stronger box and its been 6 mths from a frame to now needing a seat plastics and a tank ,exhaust  anyway thanks for the tips  ;D

I agree the 83, model was much improved over the 82, but in saying that the both are good bikes. I have ridden many Hondas over the years but never owned one. It may be time to add one to the mix.....sorry I did own an 85 XL250 when I got my L's. Forgot that one. Well I've never owned a CR!
