thinking about polishing the cr480 swinger what does everyone think yea or nei

Depends on what sort of finish. Mirror - No, brushed/satin finish - Yes but be prepared that with moisture/dirt/mud it wlll probably corrode with out regular maintenance. If your not keen on that then go for annodizing or paint.

ive got no problems pulling it off or re buffing it now and again

I decided to get my arm re-anodized, couple of reasons, to keep it looking original and easy to keep clean.
I have an alloy polished GT Zaskar and you need to keep it buffed to look good, goes dull quickly and shows marks. You can coat with a clear but that looks nasty after a while.
Anodizing is wash off the muck & park in the shed. That’s my 2 cents. :)

yep it just takes a lot of time and effort to get it polished up to high standard for annodising but its worth the effort. if your going to polish it anyway why no annodize it and preserve your hard work? you will usually have to polish it more for annodizing than you would leaving it just plain polished because annodising kinda reflects/highlights imperfections (that you could normally leave if just leaving the part polished and bare) and makes a mark look worser than what it did before annodizing so you have to be really fussy to get good results.

is annodizing a clear "coat" - ie do you keep your hi polished look - or is it another finish altogether?

You can have annodizing any colour you want. I am still a bit confused about clear annodizing though because ive spoken to some annodizers and they say 'no' there is no such thing as clear annodizing, it is just silver but it depends on the shade of silver, the level of polishing and how thick the coat is that gives the appearance of a 'clear look' but then when you speak to others they say there is clear annodizing?. There are some good websites out there that exlpain the process and finishes though if you goodle it. I found one site a while back that explained how to do it yourself. It didnt look too hard to do if you had the space to set up all the different containers of solutions required.
Hi - mirror like finishing doesnt look right on most Japanese dirt bikes and can look tacky, too bling or Harley like unless that was the original finsh on the bike eg or on British bike engine side covers. i will admit it does look pretty cool to have mirror like finishes on alloy but i just wouldnt personally do it on a jap dirt bike if it wasnt like that originally.

Caps, I'd reckon if you polish the swingarm you'll need to do something at the front of the bike to balance it out. Polishing the forks would be the most obvious but maybe if the lowers were a matching red and polishing the triples may give a more desirable look. You need to look at an image of the bike, hold that image in your mind and imagine that image with the changes you think. Sounds stupid staring at a picture but imagination is a wonderful thing and it's how I do it when I can't photoshop images to get an idea of the differing ideas and colours. Here's an idea of how paintshop can help. Done very hastily a few moments ago it still gives a good idea of the finished project. It may look shite but it's just a sample ;)

Capps, clear anodizing is just anodizing with no dye in it, so it is the natural aluminum and if you polish the swingarm then clear anodize it you won't have to polish it again. DG

Just keep it the way it is. Next it'll be a set of 'fat bars', ten ton of billet aluminium and then it's on the road to that whole 'Classic motocross/Chinese pit bike' look..... ::)
