ive been offered a 84 it490 very cheap and im thinkg bout taking it its a very clean bike but has a blown head and base gasket easy fix whatare they like as a bike and what are they worth
-
depends on condition - can go for as little as several hundred $$ but have seen them go for $4K + for a really tidy one. DDR did have some listed for big $$$
Great bikes, heaps of torque/power (heavier crank than YZ) + 5 speed box.
hard to find parts are battery box, speedo, genuine plastics, the rest is all pretty much still available through Yamaha or a/market suppliers.
There are a few things to do to help with tuning, head mod,jetting....etc
do it, they are a good bike, good complete bikes are becoming harder to find - there are incomplete shitters appearing on e-bay now & then, which people think are worth thousands as they try & cash in on the VMX,Vinduro scene
post a photo..

its not bad original spedo and headlight are goo has original battery box and all road gear

Maybe you should see how long a piece of string is,hey caps?
Seriously,as hotdog stated up to $4000 for a really good one.
Maybe $600 to $800 for an average one.I picked one up off a wrecker in Vic for $1000 back in 2006.
It had, unfortunately been stripped of all the electrics, blinkers, had a shitty pipe off another bike, and was pretty much a blue YZ,with a front non-working light. And not as quick as the YZ.I felt a bit pissed that it was missing so much gear. But,my fault for not asking more questions on its condition.
After market parts have seemed easier enough to obtain .ie;plastics,DG pipe, even the local Yamaha team, have been good in locating parts.
I enjoy riding my bike, its got loads of grunt and, once you get used to 'em they will pretty much go wherever you point them.Although I've seen some negative comments on the forum from guys who hate the YZ490 for handling reasons,I've only had one get off,and that was my fault.
It seems though, you're pretty happy with what you see.I reckon if you're buying a complete bike that needs finishing touches and some minor engine work, ask the seller what he reckons it's worth.Compare his price to what you are willing to pay for it,and in there somewhere you will arrive at a decent price thats fair for both of you.Hope this helps.
Cheers,Mark.

ive talked him down to 450 so i think im getting a bargan i probably will make it into a yz convert to race viper but the engine just need a new head gasket by the looks of it
-
That's cheap...make sure you keep the road gear, as someone will buy the speedo etc - it if you want to offload it later.
Could turn out to be a good inexpensive viper class bike
post a photo - I'd like to see what kind of 490 can be had for $450
-
Cheap as chips Caps I would buy it at that price thanks Michael. :)
-
Buy it caps, you could always sell it to That YZhilly Yamaha Bloke for his Tuning Fork Temple.
-
push start nimmo is looking for spare parts for the japanese fleet
-
Dont sell it Caps you will need it for the Second race after the 480 blows up . i would need a electric start one .
-

-

-
...he was quoted around 1k to fix it ...
one THOUSAND dollars to replace a few gaskets????? Something's not adding up here - I hope it's in your favour!
-
