Has anyone got any close up photos of the modern 91 onwards RM foot pegs on 79/80 RM/PE 250/400? As I mentioned here http://ozvmx.com/community/index.php?topic=833.0 I came across some difficulties and want to see how you other guys have done it. I’ve bushed the pegs back to 8mm with no problems. The left side spring doesn’t reach the pin on the frame. I've worked out I can reposition the pin, or is there a longer spring that I should be using instead of the spring that goes with the modern RM left peg?. The real big problem I’ve got is that the kickstarter comes down and bangs right on the corner tip where the right side spring clips into the peg and also partly hits the spring. Have other people had this problem? What did you do to fix it? Ive sort of got my own idea but I’m not convinced it’s the best way to go. I was hoping these would have been a little easier to fit. Any help is appreciated thanks

i got no furthe rthan keeping my eye out for a set of Rm pegs to suit the TM. soz can be no help yet....

I had a read of the RM N/T article in issue 14 of VMX and Andrew from MonsterRacing (does that business still exist?) said aftermarket pegs fit those RM’s
Does anyone know who makes or where you can get aftermarket pegs for 79/80 RM’s?
I’m thinking this may be a better option than trying to fit 91 onwards RM pegs as they would be a perfect fit with no mods required.
I think someone told me ages ago GMC makes some but I think they were quite expensive. Before I email him for photos/price etc I want to know if there is any other options available, maybe from Vintage Iron or some place? There seems to be decent aftermarket pegs available for Maicos and a few other brands but I haven’t seen any for RM’s yet
My preference is for stainless steel pegs. What are the mid to late 80’s RM pegs like? Would they fit on all right and are they any better than the originals? That would probably be the cheapest option but I doubt you can get them made from SS.
just checked vintage iron the but nothing for suzuki. they got nice ones for husky. maico, CZ though
Any info would be apprieciated.

look at these http://www.amsracing.com/foot_pegs.html
none for suzukis though :(
my next stop - will be vintage suzuki, maybe success there.

Someone back in the old thread had the good oil on them ??? was it pit bike pegs

I just sent my YZ pegs to Geoff as I could not find aftermarket replacements. The job he did was nothing short of excellent and I actually thought around the same price as some US ones I had seen for my CR - better deal when you factor in time and freight etc? He used the stubs and put new pegs on mine - great quality and also BIG!!!!
great job

it looks like it will have to be GMC as i havent found anthing else YET. i cant believe theres so many for Maicos but nothing for RMs and they have got what i would call very poor stock pegs. i looked in some 85 RM brochures ive got and the pegs on those dont look much better than the earlier ones so not real point in getting those.

Ive spoken to GMC about his footpegs and he only does ones for TM’s but he said from his info they should fit 79-86 RM’s and PE’s. So before buying I would need to do some more research to make sure they would work as I wouldn’t want to pay $165 and then find out they don’t fit. But if any one has them on a 79/80 RM and can tell me they are a good fit and use the stock springs then they should be right for my bike. Next issue, he cant make any till end of January and I really wanted some before the end of the yr so I can get them fitted to my frame a make sure they fit ok and do a dry assembly before blasting and painting it as I don’t want to get it painted and find things still are not right and welding/grinding needs to be done after ive got it painted.. So this whole pegs drama is holding things up for me. I work in then trade and know what its like to be extremely busy so there’s no way I’m going to put pressure on GMC to make me a set asap. So in the meantime I’m still prepared to search around.
I’ve had no success with Vintage iron, Rage racing, Vintage Suzuki or AMS racing but I thought it was worth while inquiring to AMS since they had such a large range for other bikes but am waiting on reply.
Does any one else know of any other specialist vintage places I could try?
Surely there is some other places that make pegs for old RM’s or even mid 80’s RM’s.
I found a photo of a RM 250 T on the Pro Form pipe site and it has some different pegs on it but the photo isn’t close up enough to really see what they are.
Another thing ive just noticed is that the 79/80 has different RH peg mount to the 80/81 PE so im wondering if that could have been the cause of my problem of the new 91 onwards RM pegs not quite positioned out wide enough and the kick starter hitting the spring right on the corner of where the spring hooks in. Andrew from Monster racing said he didn’t have this problem with RM 400 79/80 so I’m now wondering if its differences in the RH peg mount or kick starters or how the RM 400 motor sits in the frame.
My next idea is to go back to the idea of using the new RM pegs and get a 79/80 RM 250/400 RH pegs mount to see if that makes a difference. I cant see why it would be different to the PE mount though. You can see the part numbers below.
Has any one got an old peg mount off 79/80 RM 250/400 they can give me or lend to me? I would just need to borrow it to compare to my PE peg mount and then I can return it.
Another idea ive come up with is using pegs from late 80’s to about 1990 off RMX/RM as they still used the same springs as the PE’s and old RM’s but the in 91 they changed to the newer style springs which ive got. I would imagine RM/RMX pegs from 88-90 still are not that good but I haven’t found anyone who makes aftermarket replacements for them yet. They all start from 91 onwards models.

Look at the pit bike suppliers they have plenty of nice wide pegs and for $22 a set they are worth a look.
-
have you had a look yet at the IMS website - www.imsproducts.com - they carry Suzy pegs back to 91 and have some good pictures to check out fit maybe?
cheers

The TM pegs had a thick single flat bar type mount on the frame & the peg had 2 flats that sat over it.
The 77-78 RM pegs were of the more conventional style of 2 flats on the frame and the peg sat between them.
Then 79- 86 they went back to the TM type mount but with a spring fitted underneath the peg & over the bolt
Not sure about other years.
This peg was made for a TM but I am certain it fits RM's with the same peg mount style. Obviously if it didn't fit as I expect it to then I would refund the price on return.

yep thats the same horrible pegs i got in old farts pictures. what i think i am going to do is weld a small strip with a hole in it under the left peg on the frame and that allows me to use any RM pegs and the springs that goes with them from 91 -02 which ive got and still leave me the option of using original pegs or GMC pegs or what ever i can get. im going to see what 89/90 RM/RMX pegs are like as they may be an option as i think they still use the same springs as the early rm/pe. i can at least get my frame painted and i will still look for some other pegs and can sort out the right side later on as the right mount is bolt on and doesnt need painting right now. for some reson i can never get to the IMS site. its so slow to load. the thing with GMC pegs is i cant see the hole where the spring hooks in like in oldfarts photos but if they are no good its good to know i can return them. ive spoken to one guy who has a 79 rm 400 and he had GMC pegs on so so they should be right for my bike. i just wish the teeth were a little taller. they dont have to be pointy sharp but a little taller with the points squared off would be good

just found out the pegs i need to find. i need some pegs off a 88-90 RM 250 a 89-90 RM 125 or 89-90 RMX 250. they use 8mm pins and are a lot better and i think these will just go straight on with almost perfect fit. has anyone go any old used ones of these pegs i can try before i pay $40 US for each of them brand new from suzuki? havent found any on ebay but does anyone know a seller whos wrecking one of these bikes? even better if some one knows a aftermarket brand that does these pegs. most brends start with 91 onwards models

I used the Ballards footpeg wideners-they are just welded on to the originals(tacked on in 3 or 4 spots) and the difference on my RM250T was great-as the the bulging upper shock mounts push your feet out wider on the peg-cheap and easy fix straight from the Ballards catalogue.Put a set on the 125 now also-much better.
-
got a set of those but they were for my TS 250. they are extremely sharpe too! i think im just gonna hang out till next yr to try the GMC pegs. they are looking like the best option so far.
-
I make a footpeg widener as well, $27.50
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a393/gmcloa/Footpegs-outer.jpg)
Allthough they can look a bit tacky welded around the originals so I also make them with a centre piece, so you can cut the serrated part of the peg off the mounting bracket & weld these in their place.
Once painted they look normal except they are 44mm wide.
$44.00

The trouble is some of those Suzuki pegs are some sort of cast item so you can't really cut the old serrated bit off.

i gotta a set of Geoff's footpeg wideners with the centre piece fitted to my CR500 which i am building up at present they are a lot better than the stockers, i will take a shot and post it soon.

my GMC foot pegs just arrived. they look very good. i will report back as to how they fit.
