For twinshocks I always used 2 screwdrivers through the springs. one either side of the damper shaft.

old school black n decker vertical drill stand does the trick for me, :P

thanks walter

Just weld a bar with a pivot point on one end and a fork or tab on the other, fit pivot in vise, as it pulls to wards you in the arc it conpresses the spring, safe easy tool made in about 15 mins. Works every time. Simple is best

I recall a very large Dutch sidecar mechanic that was used to using the twin screwdriver method but when it came to the new single shocks he had some trouble. He bent right over one and pushed like hell while a mate slipped the collar out- I think he still has the mark in his forehead-20+ yrs later!!

JIm here is the Diagrams to make that gizmo i mentioned.
Works a treat and is a one person thing , so you can work away in your shed by yourself.
Reason i made one ? ---- Did the same thing your dad did, but it was just me there, standing in the shed with a screw driver in one hand and my finger of my other hand jamed in the collar and spring, PAinful but rather than scream ( cause it freekin hurt) i spent the next 10 mins Quietly and patiently trying to figure out how i could get in some slack by just using my free hand. Took some ingenuity to get the spring down and my hand out in the end, Lost my nail. bUT BOY WAS I HAPPY TO BE OUT OF THAT MESS.
TRY THIS GIZMO ..... for under $10 !

Easy to manufacture and very effective ,Thanks Freaky ;) Though I did put a security chain and pad lock around the bar and work bench leg when in compressed position, as I have dodged springs and collets !!!!
-
When you see the fulcrum it creates you might do what i did, and say why the hell didnt i think of that sooner, its so simple its crazy.............

The easiest way is like this :-
Go find a telegraph pole you can easily put your arms around. Holding the shock with your arms around the pole, compress the shock shock against the pole. You will find that the shock will easily compress, all you need is a friend to pull the collets etc out!!!!
Go try it, it works.

old school black n decker vertical drill stand does the trick for me,
Met too Mick. Being a boilermaker I've made all sorts of gizmos over the years including something not unlike Freakys drawing. In the end I modified an old drill stand and it works a treat.
Jim, if you want I can drop over one of my portable spring remover gizmos like Freakys for you to use. The drill stand one is bolted down unfortunately.

Here is a picture of the genuine Honda shock spring compressor that I have had in my special tool collection for about 25 years. You could probably make something similar using theaded rod and assorted bits of scrap steel.

Thanks to Freaky's sketch I have managed to get the springs off my ITC Ohlins without losing my sons fingers! The compressor is a piece of piss to make, doesn't require any welding and works great. Thanks again Freaky :) :) :) It really pays to google when you are stumped as you never know what you will find. It was cool to find this old OzVMX thread as a high hit which I never even remembered seeing.

Purchased a set of spring compressors made for motorcycle springs off US ebay (220434151833) $27. Comes in a metal case and they have plastic covers so they dont damage the powder coating on the springs and they dont pull of like the car type do.

Good news Pez. Like ik said you kick yourself when you realise how easi it is to make one, and then when you use em , how easy the shock comes off ? its like hot knife and butter.
I had to pull as hock down at the property the other day and ended up putting a bolt in the end of two short bits of RHS and welded an clip on it, stuck it in the vise and boom shanka, same thing - all caqme apart in 2 seconds, and all of 3 mins to make it. Cant believe how many times i had previously messed around with 2 screw driver and a prayer.
MAte its like kissing jesu :O) when you get your head around the dodgey easy speing compressor.

I purchased an Ebay set the same as FAT-TOY's, after using screwdrivers and wife with collets for years. The other good thing is they fit in a box about the size of an impact screwdriver, easily taken to the track to adjust preload without having to remove the shocks from the bike.Best $27 she ever spent.
