Can you run an IT 465 piston in a YZ 465? I imagine the porting on an IT would have been a bit different. The IT pistons always seem to be a bit cheaper.
Also how would the YZ run with an IT cylinder on it? Anyone ever done it? :)

to powerfull eh ,thought you would have bitten off more than you could chew when you tuned japanese ::)

yes you can what it dose i dont know.i think the difference is the inlet cut away.i have just bought a 1981 it465 motor complete less carby for my long tracker.the gearbox is different 1st and 5th only.looking into port timing and squish bands to see how to get a lot of mid range which i think the it has std were the yz power is more to the top.std it is a 90mph bike when new so there is enough top speed for long track with my riding skills
cheers

Looking at the cylinders I have there is not alot of difference between YZ and IT barrels. I have a YZ 465G (3r6 on the barrel from memory) and the ports are basically the same just some of the edges are sharper on the YZ and very slight difference with port heights.
A favourite mod is to use the YZ head and barrel on the IT. A fellow IT Australia member is currently running this combo. I rode the bike and it was super crisp and had a strong bottom end and midrange. My only complaint was that to me it signed off a bit early up top.
I think from memory he is using an IT piston.

Ok. Thanks guys. :)

Ross you can go either way.Basically OEM pistons on the IT have full length skirt on the intake side with 2 holes, the YZ has a arched cut away.If you use wiseco they are all arched cut away.
The cylinder have milder .ie lower exhaust port and slightly lower intake.
The heads are also different .IT's have a much deeper but narrower dome.
Basically everything is a bit molder on the IT's .Its good you can mix and match to come up wth the power that suits.

if you want to tone it down put 2 base gaskets or 1 thick one under barrell
or you can run 2 head gaskets ???
i left mine standard but i am a sick puppy ;D
main diff on barrells is exh port lower on IT
but remember the old IT465 went hard too ;)
if you want too take snap out of it without loosing power
fit the IT boost bottle (remember them) ha ha ;D
or just change up a gear ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

The heads are the same 3R5 part number. Barrells are different.
The weight in the in the crank is different. The YZ bottom end has a lighter crank with holes in the bottom end and the gearbox ratios are different.
Clutch and Magnito are the same just the IT had a lighting coil.
Carby slide has a different cut away. 3.0 for the YZ. 2.5 for the IT.
