Title: Honda CR500 electrics ????
Post by: Hoony on November 15, 2007, 05:40:55 pm
anyone know if 1986 Honda CR500RG High Tension coil and CDI unit are compatible electrically with
1985 Honda CR500RG ? i need to change out my 2 units on the 85' model for the 86' model units and wonder if they will work electrically? i know the physical mounting of the 2 units are different though.

motors are virtually identical except for compression ratio is just a bit lower on the 1986 !

next question anyone got a 1986 CR500RG CDI or HT coil or know of where one is/ wrecker that has wrecked one etc.

hoony, you might be on your lonesome on this one mate....not many of us have the bollocks for the big 500....  being a 250 rider meself, i've obvioulsy only got one, or two small ones at best.  just out of interest, where do you put them when you ride - a special tray or stand perhaps up on the seat or something?  can you get em that big thru exercise - weights or something (ouch!)?  ;D ;D

Het Twisty,

you don't need big nuts to ride them if you don't open the throttle, that's how i manage,  i just turn the idle up and shift gears.  ;D ;D

the otherway is get a frontal lobotomy.  ::) ::)

Hooney
im pritty sure your going to need to change out the rotor coil an cdi as they are useualy a matched set  unless you can find on all three the number or letters and see if they correspond to your bike

I reckon thats a myth that you have to have a matched set. So many people mix and match with great success that it has to be a crock. Best i can give you Hoony is that i put an '85 stator on my '84. As these things didn't change much over the years, i personally would give a later one a go (not that i have any idea)
