Post by: wmc83 on November 29, 2009, 09:30:48 pm
Just some progress pics on my 125j over the past year.
I wish I took more before photos! but it wasnt to bad one owner with matching numbers and had been sitting in a shed for years with a blown bottom end the plan was to build a tidy ridable bike but things tend to get out of hand ;D

So very true. All you have to do is put one NOS part on it, or polish one old bit of alloy and the whole thing goes out of control ;D

Looks fantastic, well done.

Hi thanks for all the comments I built this bike up with the intention to ride it but its going to be to nice for the kind of riding I mostly do (SEQ trail ride series and general bush bashing) so I might have a go at vmx when its finnished does anyone know of any vmx racing that goes on around the Gold coast or brisbane? Ive never raced before so It will have to be novice class :-\. Great work on your 125L so far JI if you have any dramas with parts let me know Ive found some US supliers that dont rip me on postage. Also if anyone has any NOS sidecovers for a 100/125j I am interested. ;D

Hi WMC,
We race at Nudgee with the BMCC and all over SEQ with QVMX.
You will fit right in mate.
What a bike great job, I want it now.
Are you in Brisbane?
New parts are hard to find but I am getting there. I may take up your offer if things go dry.

Looking forward to riding with you next year.

Ji

That's too nice to race. You'll have to get another one to do that! I feel guilty about my own Yammie resto now.  >:(

Hi Ji
I live on the Gold coast and yes that sounds good for next year when its finnished. As for being to nice to race maybe I should get another J one for show and one for go! my wife will love it!! ;D
Title: Re: J progress
Post by: mainline on December 04, 2009, 08:56:37 pm
Don't want to be too much of a party pooper but the BMCC club at Nudgee only go up to EVO class, which excludes water cooled, linkage bikes, sorry. The QVMX club go up to pre90 though and race all over the place including the Gold Coast Hinterland area so at least there'll be some rides nearer home for you.

Just out of interest is that tank new or restored?

Cheers

Yeah its restored but I cheated a bit in those photos with silicon spray but with some more plastic polish it really will shine.
ps Bleaching white tanks is BS IMO it doesn't work.

Very nice bike and full credit on the progress. I recently sold my oldJ and a heap of stuff on Ebay to a fella in Newcastle. There was a NOS side cover in the bits. I am a bit partial to the J models and have 3 IT175J's which share very similar Chassis.
Did you paint the swingarm. I know they were originally just aluminium. I'm trying to find a good match to the original for my IT. Keep up the good work.
 Cheers Adam.

Damn NOS sidecovers are hard to get for a 125j I can get a LHS one but that leaves the RHS and airbox cover I'll just have to keep trawling through Ebay. I don't know about IT swingarms but YZ swingarms in that year were painted the colour was called competition silver but you cant get it through Yamaha so I used autothane wheel silver which is close but if I did it again I would find something brighter (silver) but its close enough and autothane is a rellay tough finish (so I'm told) so I hope that helps.

Try general motors silver.  Is a bit brighter that the one you have there.

Just a suggestion  ;)

Nice shiney sidecover and stickers the other side will have to wait till the skin grows back on my fingers from all the sanding! :D

More progress just need some wheels. Is wheel building worth doing DIY or is it best left to the pros? :-\

Post by: mainline on February 06, 2010, 08:20:59 pm
I found wheel building fairly easy, given patience and time. It's certainly cheaper to do it yourself. I picked up secondhand rims for about $40 each and chrome plated DID spokes/nipples (front and back) for about $80 delivered. Beats $400-ish a wheel.

I suppose it depends on whether you've got the time, and if you're after a concourse finish or not. Whether the spokes on your bike are as cheap or easy to find may be another factor?
Title: Re: J progress
Post by: wmc83 on February 06, 2010, 08:43:28 pm
Spokes are easy to find and cheap for this model but finding good correctly drilled rims is my main concern especially if I buy off the net and if I use differnt rims to the stock ones (DID) will the std spokes fit?
Title: Re: J progress
Post by: mainline on February 07, 2010, 08:56:13 am
that's probably where I have to hand over to someone else? My rims are common as muck, so I didn't really have any problems there.  Your bike has those Z spokes doesn't it? not sure how that works, sorry

Title: Re: J progress
Post by: YZ250H on February 07, 2010, 09:07:18 am
I bought Excel rims from Vintage Iron for $440 US delivered.  Laced up and trued very easily (and I haven't done this before).  I used NOS spokes.  No problems.

No my bike has normal spokes Z spokes came out on the L models. $440 for Excels sounds good but I dont like their gold anodising I was thinking of using S M Pros any good?
Title: Re: J progress
Post by: YZ250H on February 07, 2010, 01:01:42 pm
Yeah, heaps of blokes use them too.  A bit cheaper than Excel too I think.  Ted ang YZHilly are 2 blokes I know of that use SMPro.  I agree about the excel gold.  A bit too much.

SM Pros it is then anyone know a good supplyer (drilled to suit drums) on the Goldcoast or brisbane? Jhon Titmans is the only onr I know of .

you could send 090 a message, he was telling me about someone else he's used for wheels/rims that were pretty good.

He doesn't slum it on the Yamaha board, so he wouldn't have seen this ;D

Hi

I just read you other post congrats on choosing an 82 yz to restore Ive had great fun with mine and apart from the steering head there pretty solid bikes but even the steering head can be fixed (not with crappy bypass hoses)! ;D ;D
I painted my frame in 2pack gloss black and the swingarm was factory painted in yamaha competition silver but thats unavailable I used autothane wheel silver but I don't think it's bright enough YZ250H suggested a coulour called GM silver you might have to ask him where he gets it from. Have fun if you have any questions just ask ;D
Title: Re: J progress
Post by: mainline on February 09, 2010, 09:35:11 pm
don't ask YZ250h anything about silver paint, he'll just recommend chroming everything ;D
Title: Re: J progress
Post by: YZ250H on February 09, 2010, 09:48:19 pm
Geez, one chrome pipe and suddenly you're "Mr Chrome" ;D ;D
I used 2 pack - the brand name I can't remember.  I could find out if it helps.  Bought it from a paint wholesaler in Cairns.  Chosen from about 200 colour swatches on about 10 books.  I took the old swingarm along for comparison.  The best I could do was GM Silver.

WMC - I have 2 125H's and a 125J on the waiting list, so I'd be very interested to know how you solved the steering head issue.

FWIW I used gloss black rattle cans for the frame - that was when I started off on a budget - sadly that went out the window - not exactly sure at what stage.  Others prefer powder coating. I went for satin engine cases and hubs, gloss barrel, claer coat head (yet to see how it handles the heat)

Andrew,

The easiest way I find to post photo's is via a photo hosting site, like www.photobucket.com

you upload your photo's to that site first, then post a link to them on this site. If you get stuck there's a few help tips at the top of the main forum page.

As far as paint is concerned, if you want to go nuts on detail, you can't go past http://www.yz125d.blogspot.com/  ...for paint tips and the correct paint to use on different parts.

Are you going to race the bike when you're finished ?

hey Mr Chrome, at least there's no goat involved ;D

Hey Andrew
I get most of my parts from a outfit called Boats.net in the US http://www.boats.net/ (http://www.boats.net/) they are great to deal with and if you keep your orders small (half a dozen small items) there std postal charge is $8.95 US but you need to enter the part numbers as they dont have diagrams for older models I just use south seattle yamaha to get the part number and search Boats.net for the part.
For hard to get parts try speed and sport or ebay but dont give up on your local yamaha dealer some parts they sell are cheap I got my swing arm chain guard (the big white one) for twenty something dollars. As for the front number plate I restored it with Jif and Mothers plastic polish.
Yz250h the biggest problem is corrosion of the steering shaft and seal surfaces the shaft on mine looked bad when I pulled it out but once it was cleaned up the rust was superficial and the shaft seal surfaces were OK. The big problem is the bottom seal it's like a normal seal turned inside out (seals on the outside to the steering head surface and is pressed on to the steering shaft) and its the steering head tube seal surface that corrodes and leaks I fixed mine by pressing a 42mm speedi sleeve
http://www.alliedbearings.com/mfg_prod/seals/cr_speedi/index.html (http://www.alliedbearings.com/mfg_prod/seals/cr_speedi/index.html)
into the steering head along with a shit load of sealant and it seams to work great Ive air tested it with no leaks but the big test will be when get it going with coolant in it hopefully soon! hope that helps. :)

Guys

I've had great dealings with Rich Sharp at boats.net
email him - [email protected] with your wish list and he'll provide you with a shipping quote. For orders under US$60 they'll ship First Class internantional, which is fairly cheap. They're great for Yamaha parts and you can also get a few Honda bits like nuts & bolts.

I used some sort of white paste automotive sealant is the seal your missing the one that goes on middle of the steering head shaft?

The black outs are painted from new but I cut mine from vinyl stickers and I got a NOS canister bracket from Speed and Sport also I spotted a NOS linkage cover on Ebay the other day so have a look there. As for the swingarm the 125s are 100% painted from new the finish looks like its anodised but its paint I would have thought the 250&490s would be the same but I'm not sure. :-\
My 125 won't be running for a while the house is getting painted and I'm away riding on the WR this weekend ;D so I might ge it running in a month or so.

The pipe was about a years worth of ebay waiting NOS for $250 au I wasn't keen on DG either and the NOS one was cheaper so no contest! The hardest part is the waiting but they do come along and if you buy an aftermarket one you can garentee there will be a NOS pipe on ebay a week later!

The boots are made by polisport I think they were from eBay and the pegs where eBay as well they are for a mid 90s yz but work fine you will need to drill out the peg mounts to 10mm to make them fit but the kick starter will hit o/s pegs it's ok I just don't kick all the way thru the stroke. Buy the way there's a outfit on eBay that sells some nice stainless pegs for about $60.

Wow how were the numbers at CD7! What a great track Green park is I had a ball blasting around there apart from a gear shifting problem (bent gear lever rubbing on clutch cover >:() everything went good    well almost my inlet manifold is forked and its getting worse and I'm having no luck finding another NOS or second hand anyone have one or know of where one is?

Very nice J.  Shame to get it dirty.  I have one running and one in bits ready to rebuild.  Great old bikes.  Had one new and nothing but great memories.  Mine are/will be riders.  Not too pretty to look at, but nice to ride.  The rider is yellow and the parts are for a white one.

Retro.

Have fun with your resto and hope you don't need a new inlet manifold because thet don't seem to exist! oh well out with the black sikaflex and a pointing trowel ;D
