Title: cr with xl power
Post by: misfit on November 23, 2009, 07:33:40 am
i was talking to a mate last night and he told me of a plan to buy a late 70's - mid 80's cr250 honda frame and fit it with an xl250/350 engine. has anyone done such a thing before, and would it be eligible for racing in vmx or in vinduro events

This is "Fast Eddie" Phipps XL350 powered Elsinore. This bike is a veritable fuel dragster, the engine's a methanol burning 490cc rocket that overpowers the humble chassis cauaing to to have some "unpredictable" handling traits.. The bike would be much easier to live with with a 240 or milder 350 engine. Unless you're handy with hacksaw and welder and have a lot of patience, this isn't the swap for the beginner. Even though Eds frame looks prett much factory, the conversion is very hard, adapting the bottom frame rails of an XL plus a lot of fabrication.

Hey....I'm interested in this project as well. I have been reading up on many of the hand built bikes of the late 70's and early 80's. Custom frames being fitted up with honda 4 stoke motors. The look is assume. Please post web links and pic's if possible..... :o :o :o

It's not quite the same but this is my XL250 I changed around a bit.
I stayed with the nearly stock motor, but opted to add an RM front end and a modified rear end including an extended swingarm and top shocky mounts.(http://[IMG]http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad20/pmc57/IMG_0787.jpg)(http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad20/pmc57/IMG_1067.jpg)[(http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad20/pmc57/IMG_1080.jpg)(http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad20/pmc57/IMG_1402.jpg)(http://i917.photobucket.com/albums/ad20/pmc57/IMG_1401.jpg)[/img]

yep build something with XR500, BTW love the light weight imdustrial swingarm in the previous shots.

Anyway an IT 400 slips straing into an XL500 frame and you have the power and handling  ;D

I think I have a Trail and Track mag with a '84 Cr500 fitted with a XR 350 motor.
I'll see if i can locate.

I think that was in an ADB mag. Ray Buchanan in Brisbane built one in the 90's for the Thumper Nats.

I mean the beauty of the XR engine is pretty squat and will fit virtually anything.

This is my personal favorite..... should have been the 79 XR500.

What a sexy bike Marc. It would look much better in my shed though.
I saw what looked to be a `78 or `79 CR frame with an XL/XR motor in it down in tassie last year at the nats. The motor was painted in the original CR red and it looked an absolute treat. Shame it was kept on the back of the ute in the carpark!

Ive also seen an XR350 motor shoehorned into an '84 CR frame which looked like a good fit as well. Why the 350 and not the 500 is beyond me though.

I really want to build up a decent pre80 thumper and would love a C&J or White Bros. frame if anyone can help. If not, I might have to sacrifice a 79 PE frame to fit the 79 XR500 motor into.

At the end of the day, all thats required to fit a motor into a frame is a bit of imagination and alot of $$$$

Then theres the time needed to sort it into a bike that works...but thats the fun bit!
