One of the rarest of all Montesa's. A mid year model (33M) right after the Lacross and right before the 53M "orange tanker"
Saw one of these in excellent condition go to Spain for crazy money.
-
Hmmmm, yummy. I think this is an Italian collectors bike. Wouldn't you like to have one in this condition Dave :). Wouldn't we all :D. Looks like it would be a creditable racer as well ;).

I'm sorry but I think everything before the "Clockwork Orange" bikes were uglier than most of the women I used to take home when I drank. YUG!

I did a fairly lengthy article on the Montesa La Cross in VMX #33 and after researching the model and having a good look at Cody Tellis's beauty I reckon the La Cross would have to be one of the prettiest Montesas ever. I recall Gary O'Brien ripping into the opposition at Ravenswood on his Dads La Cross back in the early '90's. I raced and visited Ravenswood a number of times back in the early '90's and fondly recall Gary O'Brien dominating the pre '70 class against serious opposition. He held his own in the pre '75 class on the bike as well.
I'd gladly own a La Cross so if anybody knows of one, I'm interested.
Below: Cody Tellis's La Cross featured in VMX issue #33. Ugly? I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder

and a well researched article too read as well ;D .gets the blood flowing for the day :P
quote:Whilst most La Crosses were finished in red and silver livery, our feature bike is one of fifteen sold be Texas dealer that had been painted in blue with red and white detail and sold as LaCrosse Americas' with official sanction from the factory.
I find the front brake air scoop would be a high talking point track side 8)
cheers

One more; Was this an OEM paint scheme or a personal expression of good taste (hey, it was the psychedelic 60's ;D).

OEM... including the slash across the carb apron. The slash on the red bike is incorrect.
Cody's blue bike is correct.

I was referring to the last one.
There seems to be a progression The Green one was first with a rudimentary chamber. The others seem to get a more sophisticated pipe as they went along.

This is my Brother Dennis Racing a 1966 Montesa La cross at Barrabool the other photo of the hondavilliers 198 cc was taken by me with a box brownie camera.
-
they were never green, and the pipe on that is home made, the original pipe was oval, my bike was oval.
-
I once had a tank frame and other bits and pieces for a 250 Impala. The tank was the same shape, in steel, and was dark green (original paint) so maybe it was only for the road bike version.
-
la cross models were red, the next model was yellow, in 1967 the GP 250 cappra, in 1968 the orange models with whites, my brother race a 1969 model 360, orange model, 1970 to 1971 white frame gray tank sidepiper cappra then in 1972 black framed gray tank sidepiper cappra, 1973 vr 250 cappra straight fin round barrel, 1974 vr 250 cappra crinkle cut fins then came the V75.

Ah!!!, Back in the day.......
Coming into Cooma on the Snowy Highway after the '70 Alpine Rally. Getting along smartly on my YDS5 at about 140kph, suddenly there's this dreadful noise, rnnnnnnnnnnnn, and pass me goes an Impala (rare as even in those days) at about 160kph. The rider is 'tucked in' and doing a fair impression of a dog humping a golf ball ;). Well I'm a little distracted by this apparition, slack jawed and eyes as big as golf balls, but no sooner does he get pass me and the noise changes to, blllllllllllllllllllllll, and he's slowing suddenly and I'm taken by surprise and doing braking dramatics to stop myself from inserting my bike and body up his elementary orifice.
He dives to the side of the road and, now that my braking and heart rate are under control, I pull over with him to see what's wrong and can I help. Almost before the his wheels stop turning the rider has the plug out, cleaned and off again. Looking over his shoulder I could clearly see the whiskered electrode. Something had been sucked in and bridged the gap - no air filter ::).
We kept company into Cooma, refueled, shared the hand dryer in the rest room to get warm and then set off up the Monaro Hwy for Canberra for what became one of my more memorable rides.
This was when the Monaro was a winding, narrow, bumpy, B grade country road. It became our private race track. 'Tucked in' we were 'up it for the rent' chasing each other at 140 -160 all the way to Canberra. He was probably a more experienced rider than me and I could see the Impala was a good handling bike. The rider seemed to be able to put the bike anywhere and make any correction mid corner effortlessly. It would hold a tight line through sweeping bends, straight as an arrow like, 'it was on rails'. The YDS was wobbling, weaving and wallowing like a beached whale. But I could clearly make it up with acceleration off the corners. We really didn't get maxed out but clearly there wasn't much in it for top speed.
We went are separate ways parting in the Canberra traffic. I had to stop and refuel ::).
