Title: New OzVMX Website
Post by: Graeme M on November 06, 2009, 08:48:03 pm
I have discovered a 'social network' platform that may be the way to go for OzVMX in the future. It provides members with facilities to join a forum, post up photos and videos, add events to a calendar, and post their own blog entries. So far it loooks easy enough to use, and I've added a Classifieds Marketplace. The Classies seems a bit limited and clunky, but it also seems to work.

This platform is the Ning platform. If anyone knows about this and has any concerns or criticisms, please post them here.

For now, the site is hidden while I do some testing etc. I need 10 people to join me in testing it out. I have only just got it running so I won't know much more than you, but it could be fun figuring it out. Please PM me with your interest, and give me the EMAIL address you would like to use to be invited to the site.

The site is at http://ausvmx.ning.com but as I said not much to see there right now. To get an idea of it, visit the Texas Vintage Racing Club site on Ning here: http://tvrcnetwork.ning.com/

Texas site looks good Graeme M.The photos through out make it look inviting.
It will be great to see ausvmx build up over time. 8)
Whats the difference between the http:// and www. ??
cheers

Not much. A web address or 'domain' is http://www.ning.com. But you can also have what are known as sub-domains which don't use the www. Instead they use the sub-domain name in front of the main domain. So, it's http://www.ning.com (domain) and http://ausvmx.ning.com (sub-domain).

Am I stupid to ask why? I'm not at all computer oriented(still trying to work out how CDI works-or not)
but you must want to change for a good reason-is it that there's not enough room or something??

No worries EML. There are several reasons. One is server space, although that's not such a big problem. The other is my time and effort. I am no computer whiz although I do know a bit, and this site takes a HUGE amount of time and effort. What I need is something that offers more features, for less money, and with less effort. As well, I'd like something that members can do more with. This Ning thing looks like it just may do that. We shall see.

I like it Graeme, its a good set up. Very easy to use, I like how the events page works, I don't think anyone will have any problems with the site.

Keep Smiing :)

Yes Jackie, it is very easy to use alright. So far our test crew have added a few photos, blog entries and so on. It all seems pretty good and I think I am happy to run with it. I've even set it up to allow anyone with a Flickr account to be able to import their pics straight in.

The really good thing about the site is that it has 10Gb of space for free, which is 10 times what I currently pay for. Plus I can buy 10Gb units of additional space if I need to. A small drawback is that it has to have Google ads along one side which is a bit of a pain, but as I have previously signed up for Google Adsense I can plug mine in there and so at least they'll be bike related.

I much prefer this SMF Forum that we use now to the forum on the Ning site though, so my plan is to keep this one going and link to it from the Ning site. However people will now be able post their photos on OzVMX itself. Plus anyone can post their own blog entries and so on. The new Classies is called Marketplace, and it's not as good, but much much easier for me. So it gets my thumbs up.

At this stage I think I'll do the change-over sometime in the next week or two. At that time, I will close the current OzVMX and replace it with the new site.  So all the old race reports and photos will go. This does not apply to the Victorian Classic Motocross Club site on OzVMX which will remain as is. And as I said, this will have no effect on this forum. It will continue as is. One small downside is that you will need to register separately with the Ning site as it is on a different system. You don't HAVE to sign up though, as you will still ba able to use this forum, AND read the new site. You just won't be able to add photos or ads etc.

I will open the Ning site for people to look at  in a few days time, once I have a few things sorted better. It will still be getting a few tweaks so it won't be open for joining just yet...

The new OzVMX website will be released very soon. Probably this weekend. At that time, the old OzVMX site will remain as is with a note on the Home Page explaining the change. In about a week or two, I will remove all of the current content (ie all the race reports and so on) and the home page will be changed to contain an explanatory note and a link to the new site. Then a little while after that, the old site will simply redirect visitors to the new one.

The new site is a 'social network' site. So, it has some neat features like being able to post photos, videos, have your own blog and so on. But it does have some weird stuff too, like being able to invite friends and send gifts, whatever that's all about.

One nice thing is that I have added a small eBay window so you can search eBay from the OzVMX website.

I will be keeping the old forum and there will be a link from the new site to this forum.

There is also a calendar that anyone can add an event to, however your event will need to be approved by me before it goes live.

You don't need to register with the new site to view it, but you do need to be registered to add photos, videos, blog posts etc. Note though that this forum and the new site are separate systems, so you do need to be rgistered separately for each. You do NOT have to register with your real name, but you will need a valid email address. You may prefer to use the same user name and password for both. Stay tuned, I will let everyone know once the new site is live.

Sounds good Graeme.
You know, I was actually the first one to register on this site after you moved on from the Petshop thing. It's been interesting seeing all the changes and I'm amazed at how you've managed to keep it all going for so long.
Well done mate and continued success with it.  :)

I must admit I am not sure why I have kept at it.  I think it's both feeling that I am helping in some way to build the vintage dirtbike scene in Australia along with the creative aspect of it all.

This year in particular has been difficult as personal circumstances have left me with precious little opportunity to even ride a bike, let alone go to a vintage race meet. That is unlikely to change in the future either.

So it seems my involvement will become more and more from the sidelines through maintaining OzVMX as and when I can.

Hopefully the new site will both enable things to keep growing and fostering the sense of community while also reducing my overhead both financially and physically. We will see huh?

OK y'all, the new site is as ready as it'll ever be.  There may be a few things that still need tweaking but I guess we'll find out as we go along. Remember, you can browse around and look at stuff people post there without joining. But you will need to register if you want to post your own content (eg photos). There is LOTS of space, so we should be right for a while. You can post up to 100 photos or videos. I think though it's good if you try to keep image sizes small if you can, and of course videos can be quite large so they will chew through storage space. I would still recommend storing such things on Youtube or Photobucket, but do feel free to use OzVMX on Ning and we'll see how we go. If we find we are just using space too quick, I will probably need to ask for a small donation from all members to pay for additional space.

When you first visit, remember to scroll right down as there are a few things further down the screen, such as the neat eBay widget that lets you search eBay from OzVMX.

Remember, this forum and the Ning site are separate systems and you'll need to login to each separately. It may be easier to register with the new site using the same user name and password as you use for the forum. To register, just click on the Sign Up link at the upper right of the screen. As always, I have to approve your registration, so it may take up to two days to have that happen, especially on weekends when I am off doing other things rather than sitting on the computer.

Welcome aboard.

PS It's ausvmx cos they won't let me have a five character URL!!!

I have a few concerns regarding the new site:
How are the Good 'ol Boys going to find their way around it? They'll need a ship's sextant, map of the Southern Cross, divining rod and a pre-decimal compass to find their way around.
Also. It's a little bit.....ah.......how shall we say........ah.......mmmmmmm........well...........

gay?

its a shame really that we are going to loose the assie knock about no holds bar forum we have all come to love and hate but it s what makes it great is the indivaluallaty off the whole thing and the characters involved :P

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that this forum will remain as is, and the new space just replaces the home page of OzVMX.com
So we've got more space for photos, adverts etc
Is that right?

A blog is just a sort of personal story page - like a diary I guess. You can post up a story about anything - what you did today, the last race you went to, why you think Pre 90 should be banned forever etc. Other people can read it, and comment on what you said if they want. So it's a bit like the forum in that you post and other people reply. Blog stands for Web Log.

Just added a live chat feature, don't know if people would find that worth having but let's see what people think. I think it lets you have private live chats too.

Just scroll down the home page, or click the Chat link on the menu at the top of the screen

*Update* Doesn't look like this works. Can't find any settings to make it work either...

Well, the new site has been a great success with plenty of new members and lots of activity. I plan to enable 'groups' over the weekend. Groups are sort of like separate mini-sites dedicated to a specific purpose. They have a comment wall that any group member can add to (ie just a long list of comments), a dedicated discussion forum (ie just for group members), and a couple of other features. So, an easy way for a group of people with shared interests to have their own space on the site. I will enable it so that anyone can start a group, but the group will need to be approved by me before it goes live. The person who starts a group owns it, so they are responsible for moderating it - that is, making sure everyone behaves etc.

An example of what you may want as a Group is say a group dedicated to Maicos, or to a bunch of riders from an old club that would like to share stories. Maybe a Group aimed at organising social rides in the Melbourne area. You get the picture.

I'll probably create a couple of default ones to get it happening, so if you have an idea for any, let us know.

OK, I've created three groups - Pre 78 Fans, Evo Lovers and 80sMX. Anyone can join them, but don't join just because you can. The idea of groups is that if you have a special area of interest, you can create a group where like minded members can join you to discuss that paticular interest. Like the Suzuki Footpeg Owners group. Broader categories aren't needed - that's what this forum is for. But if you want a sort of private area of your own, where you can discuss your own thing, then go along and create a group.

The latest groups are listed down the left hand side, but to see all groups, just click the Groups link in the navigation bar at the top of the screen at http://ausvmx.ning.com

I guess I'd intended Pre 78 to be for all Pre 78, including Pre 75/65. I din't want to create too many 'class' related groups. Groups are more about specific interests. But I guess I don't want to try to control this group thing too closely and who knows, maybe it's an idea that won't fly. So maybe I'll make Pre 78 Pre 78 Only and add in a Pre 75 group as well. How's that sound?  Or will we just make Pre 78 the group to cover it all, ie call it Pre 78/75/65?
