Title: 465 muffler info needed
Post by: GMC on October 21, 2009, 09:35:16 am
Hi Guys, due to recent feedback it seems my 465 muffler jig is NQR.
I have what I beleive is a good jig for the 83 490 muffler, so does anyone know if this muffler is interchangable with the 465's
From what I can gather, the muffler that I jigged from for the 465 was not an original & must not have been fitting properly so I jigged a perfect replica of an ill fitting muffler  :(

If the 465 muffler is different to the 490 muffler then does anyone have a good fitting 465 muffler that I could borrow? Would only need it for a day or 2.

They are different part numbers for both 82, & 83 but the 80 & 81 465 are the same.
I am about to restore a 465H for a mate for next season and maybe he will lend it but if I know him he will want something in return?
I will ask him.

Thanks Viper, yes your right about the part No's, but it may be something as simple as the later muffler being 10mm longer that would bring out a new part No, so it doesn't completely rule out interchanging mufflers.

Depends how many arms & legs your mate wants.

He wants to keep the original pipe and mufler for when he retires the bike. He has a DG pipe already but doesnt have a mufler. What sort of deal could you do?

Did you need the muffler or just some dimensions Geoff.  Not sure about the one I took off my bike, but it seemed to fit the bike OK.   You are welcome to have it if it is any good to you.  I will take some photos on the week-end if I get a chance.  I put a DG muffler on it in its place, but it does not overlap the standard pipe and needed a joint.  Are you after any particular measurements ?

If it helps the 250 and 465 frames are the same.

The J muffler is longer than than the 465.  The J muffler has a resonater chamber on the muffler so the pipe is slightly shorter and the muffler tail longer.

Thanks for the input guys.
Dimensions aren't really helpful as angles & stuff is hard to define.
Ideally I need to borrow a good original. (Stuffed core doesn't matter)
The one I originall jigged from didn't have the front mounting bracket which leads me now to suspect it wasn't an origianl 465 muffler.
I need to set up properly the entry angle of the stinger tube & it's relationship to the mounting brackets

Hi Torm
Whereabouts are you?
It would be intersting to compare to my 83 K jig as the J & K models have differnt part No's for the muffler.

There you go - once again very generous Darren.
I would have sent mine GMC, but I couldn't put my hand on my heart and say it was the right one.

Thanks Torm. Theres no urgency for the J - K comparison but it would be good to add to my knowledge base, so whenever you wander up this way would be fine.

Hi GMC.

Here is one on a 465G.  The muffler is in bad condition with the end blown off.

Are you repairing or remanufacturing ones for these bikes?  If not do you know if the DG ones from DirtOverstock correct for a 465G pipe where I dont have to use a extension piece from a 490J to make them fit?

Do you know anyone to use to blow out the dents in the origional pipe?  Hopefully its still strong enough to take it...lol

thanks

Stephen

Hi Stephen
I am trying to correct my jig to manufacture mufflers for this model.
I'm unsure about all of the changes between the models so can't comment on the DG stuff
I repair pipes, blow dents out & repair mufflers as well

cool, I would like to keep the origional pipe and an origional looking muffler if possible.

I put this on a mates 490J and the whole setup meets the bolt holes on the J frame.  The G pipe itself is longer in length than the J one.  The J muffler has an additional resonator?? section as part of the muffler.  So the lenght of the muffler front section that joins to the pipe is shorter on the G than the J.  I guess any prospective buyers need to know if the bike has an origional G pipe not a substitute J one.

The pipe on this bike lived in a chook run for many years.  I got the bike for a case of beer and the pipe was hanging off it full of feathers and shit.  Its a bit rusty on the outside but seems solid enough. I would be interested in sending you the whole shebang for repair.  Would you need it sand blasted first?

I had a couple of initial questions about the mufflers.  I just want to do some flat track meets with the kids so I'm a bit worried about how quiet I need to get this so I dont get pinged at the track?  I have another YZ490S with a pro-circuit pipe and muffler and it is bloody deafening. lol  I realise you cant quieten them much but I had an 84 L model when they were new and I cant remember it being so loud with the standard muffler.  Maybe when I was 20 they just sounded good.

I was contemplating using a spare J muffler and trying to cut that up to make one for the G. Is the one you make going to have a removable end cap so we can repack the thing every now and again but retain that origional look?

thanks for your time,

Stephen

I think the originals were steel?
This is typical of my mufflers, round polished alloy, with removable ends for repacking.
This is what I had for the 465 but it turns out the stinger section is wrong.
