I've had work done by Steve at Better Bikes in SA. Pretty quick turn around when it was done.

Here is his what his web site says!

After 38 years of being Betta Bikes, I have hung up that hat and finally shut the doors to 10A Cottage Lane, Hackham.

I will still be doing stator rewinds and component work but no longer any whole motorcycle repairs.

General Discussion / Hodaka Information
« on: January 12, 2024, 08:48:34 AM »
Hi All

I may have the opportunity to buy a boxed up Hodaka. Has not run for at least 20 years. Located on a farm in the central west. Only thing I know is that it has the chrome tank. I will get it but is there anyone in Australia who deals with spares etc.

I wasn't looking for another project but this one is a bit left field, something to spice up the VMX juices in me.

Tech Talk / Re: DT/YZ gearbox
« on: June 26, 2022, 03:29:17 PM »
I'm running an MX250a gear set in a RT3 bottom end. From memory you run the DT / RT selector forks. Pretty sure as stated the early DT cases were a little different.

It could be as simple as sliding the gears you want on to the original shafts. Also worth noting is that I think its 4th gear ratio is same on the DT/RT and the MX250A. From memory you have to use the DT output shaft. MX360A have the balance chain driver but it you track down a MX360 gear set you can still use original DT shaft with 1st gear from DT gear box. You don't need it after your moving anyway.

Set of verniers and a bit of space to set the two gear sets down will make all the difference.
Good luck.

Yamaha / Re: Yamaha DT 1 clutch actuator

I use one of Sleepy's spiral bronze bushes on my RT1. It was amazing how much lighter and quicker the clutch works.

Great bit!

General Discussion / Re: Who's smarter

From what I'm seeing day to day at work, we have to lower the DUMB bar every year.

Recently we had to paint a red strips around a the clear roof sheets on the warehouse roof. Then we had to put up signs explaining what the red paint stripes were for. Then we had to put a risk assessment sheet at the roof entry point. Then there was another tag put on the key ring to the gate for the roof entry saying read the risk assessment.

The right thing to do is just talk to the people accessing the roof. Management says that would not stand up in court!

Now, what was that about Darwin Theory?????

I'm currently running an RD250 kicker on my RT1. I know you want shorted but it needs to be added to the list.

Wanted / Megacycle Cams for 82 XR500
« on: September 18, 2019, 10:27:23 PM »
Hi All
I'm in need of a 1982 XR500 Megacycle Cam Shaft ( the one with the needle bearings). The standard grind preferred.
Is there an agent in Australia? The USA store has limited access - and no email address >:( >:( >:(.

Or a good Second Hand XR head?????

Thanks in advance.

Wanted / Re: Kick start for 77/78 yz125 or 77/78/79 IT175
« on: September 14, 2019, 08:52:35 AM »
You will pay big dollars for real a YZ or IT on. There are plenty of DT ones out there. If its the spline part that is gone just pinch that bit off the new DT one. If not then us the whole thing.
I have a IT with the DT one and its fine.

Yamaha / Re: Motocross seat conversion for Yam DT1?
« on: February 17, 2019, 12:22:28 PM »
So I run a AT1 tank with an 1979 XL250 seat.

You need to weld bracket to the frame to make it work but plenty around. Good length with the smaller tank.

Note to Self. If I did this conversion again I would move the tap on the tank 5 cm back as it hits the cylinder head.

MX250 seat would be the best choice.

Tech Talk / Re: Exhaust port height on Piston-port 250 ?
« on: January 14, 2019, 10:32:52 PM »
Hi All

Piston Ports aren't happy with high exhaust port heights. However, they can cope with some increase. Below are copies out of the 250 Yamaha Clymer. The reed valve Motocross version ( Enduro  not shown has a 37mm port height). The other two are shorter than your 36mm height.

The real trick with PP's is the intake. Earlier mods for the smaller bores (125 and 175) was to raise the bottom of the piston 1mm. I've raised the skirt by 2mm on my reasonably standard 360 with great results. Next piston I'll go to 6mm or maybe 8mm shorter skirt. On mine I basically made the skirt flat. When I go bigger I'll curve it similar to YZ pistons.

I've discussed with a friend how far you can go and he has gone as high as 16mm off the skirt on an old TS400. He recounted that the best results peaked at around 10 or 12mm.

Your 250 may liven up a bit with a piston chop. Good luck with it.

Vinduro / Re: 1977 Yamaha IT 250 rego NSW ?
« on: December 22, 2018, 12:09:50 PM »
They can and were registered in NSW.

No Compliance Plate Needed. Just have to be sure that the Frame/ Engine numbers are in the Roads and traffic data base.

Helps heaps if it was registered new. Helps even more if you had the original rego papers.

Yamaha / Re: Avail of DT1MX parts list.
« on: December 22, 2018, 12:02:26 PM »
RT1 and DT1 have different Bore Strokes.

The interchange of parts is pretty amazing.
My RT1 has MX250A gearbox, YZ250D clutch plates and friction plates with springs, IT250D Stator and Flywheel, YZ400 CDI.
The cases are RT3.

The RT1 frame and wheels have some differences to RT2-3 but nothing that is not allowed under the Regs.

If you have the time, you can chase down the many different gearbox ratios in the MX250. Eg you can make a super close ratio if you want.

If the time ever comes and I find myself not racing MX, I'll register the RT1 (I left the lighting Coil in). Make a hell of a street bike at the lights.

Good Luck with it.
