Yamaha pipe slip on flange shortening?

G'day all,

Recently i bought a new DG pipe for my YZ250J '82. It has a slip on style flanges to the joint on the cylinder however when i was fitting it, i realised that the exhaust flange is too long that made the gasket at the bottom can't come in contact with the exhaust joint in order to provide the gas sealing...i'm thinking of shortening the flange with a brobo or grinder for a better fit. What do you guys think?

sorry cannot help here, i was talking to a mate on the way to VIPER VMX yesterday and was discussing YZ250J's and how popular they were in that year and that you never see any now.

Here it is ..the old man used to have one back then and god knows what happened to it. So i decided to get one into my vintage collection..paid about 2k for it from a bloke in town. Only just done a new top end and new decals for the tank...now it's up to the exhaust part

I think this was mentioned somewhere else, but the pipe flange can't be shortened to fit the gasket tight without ruining the mounting geometry so a metal ring that fits inside the pipe was machined to the right length to butt the exhaust flange and gasket tight against the cylinder stub.

Had the same problem with the DG pipe on my 465, I made the spacer but discovered that the end of the port wasn't square to the pipe so even then it wasn't sealed properly
I did a whole heap of measuring & found that the start of the pipe was smaller than the inside of the port so I made a new flange that fitted the cylinder properly & cut the end of the pipe off. In effect I made the parallel section of the exhaust port longer
