Generally, the TT was more off road focused, less compromised with lights and rego stuff. I think some TT models might not have been universally road registrable. Basically, the TT was the “enduro” version, and the XT was the commuter/trail bike version. When I had a new TT600, it had a plastic tank, useless headlight, and tiny blinkers. I’m fairly sure the corresponding XT had a steel tank, larger headlight, and roadbike size blinkers. For example.

Or were you after specifics?

i believe (not sure) that the tt and xt gear ratios, cam and carb / airbox bits etc were different. forks and shock may have had different internals, road going gear on xt substantial, tt may have had alloy rims? but as above, tt a competition focused trailbike and the xt a road focused trailbike.

its possible the frames had different rakes etc but i doubt it. a yamaphile will tell us soon....

I think the differences would vary depending on if you are talking about the 250, 350, 500 or 600 versions.

you will need to be a bit more model specific as there are many models...

I don't know much about them. Want to do a bit of backyard dirt track racing on a mates property. Must be pre 1990.
And how do they compare with the XR 250's of the same era?

xr's were a cut above in my estimation, the tt xt's were a more trailbike orientation while the xr were competition based so snappier engines ( as far as pre 2005 250 4 bangers go ::)) sharper steering, better suspension.. but none of these were massive differences. a tt 250 might actually be a slightly better dirt tracker in the steering department... but an xr will probably round it up all over...

back in the day we used to flat track on the riverflats on BEMS (BARE ESSENTIAL MACHINES) They were xl250s. remove all accesories, dirt track tyres n remove the front brake lever. They were cheaper n faster than the yamahas. hold them flat, faster go up gears, to slow down go down gears, you never back off just steer. the more bikes the more fun.......

Thanks for the info guys. A few of us in the 50+, want to have a bit of fun, dirt track racing on private property. I have a slight advantage, because I done a bit of classic racing at Nepean. We modeled our track on Nepean. I'll try and post some pics when it happens.
Cheers.

Always go the TT as it can do what an XT can do on the road and beat one on the dirt, miss my 87.

The DOHC TT250s made from 1985 onward are great little bikes, my 1988 model did a great job of hauling my over weight (130kg without riding gear) arse from Birdsville out to Popoel Corner and back in July without complaint, you just need to ride them like you have stolen it. About the only bit than can cause some frustration is sorting out the YDIS twin carbie set up if you fit a really free flowing (loud) exhaust, but it can be done if you are patient.
Why do things the easy way, when with a bit of effort you can really make it difficult for yourself!!
