1978 H6 360 Montesa Do they handle and stop?
« on: August 11, 2008, 08:15:51 PM »
I can aquire a roller which I am interested in fitting a Honda XL350 motor.

Would I be wasting my time,I like the honda and have plenty of spares but need something with some suspension travel.

I realise that the wrath of the Montesa gods may strike me down for sacrilege ;)

Why wreck a fairly rare Monty. The handling doesn't seem out standing from the above. Would you be better off getting a RM, CR or similar?

I've got a reed valve 250 H7 motor that is looking for a home ;).

The roller is just sitting at a mates place and he has said if it is any use to me then take it.
So the price is right for my project.
The engine is there somewhere but has a buggered transmission that is incomplete.
If I were to repair it,would a complete usable gearbox be obtainable?

If you talk nicely to me something might be worked out 8).  I've got a 6 speed cluster (both shafts) in good condition. I would guess $100 would see it change hands.

thanks graeme, for that link to the bike test and before I speak nicely to you ;) I will check out just what the motor needs.
I think it would be a shame to butcher it if it can be saved.
Just have to come to terms with mixing fuel and dealing with bing carbies again ::)

I will contact you once I have done the feasability report

Gorby,

If you are new to Monties, like me ::), these might help you puzzle through what you have (or don't have ::) >:().

Here's a repair manual on Jared's site.
http://www.southwestmontesa.com/montesa/frmst1.htm

You might like to look through Jared's site to see what is and isn't available, especially comsumerables. You can also talk to Ross, he's restoring a H7 (I think) and also BigK, he's Monty knowledgeable and has some parts (I think).

Jared is the resident Monty Guru 8) and I'm sure he will help you 'scratch the itch'  ;D if you have a q or two.
http://www.southwestmontesa.com/

In between, these parts book pages might help you puzzle through things. I've other pages in digital form so if you want I can email you with them. Let me know.

The pages are a mix of VB250, H6 and H7 (titled) and the detail might vary but it'll give you something to work with.

After saying if you are going to ride it don't fit a bing!!!

I finally after 3weeks got a return e-mail from Fay with the part no, and price!!!
So I would like to withdraw my last post and change it to if you want parts in a hurry don't fit bing. LOL

Cheers
Tom

Another thing against doing Honda engine transplant - the Monty frames are heavy, typically 20kg for frame & swing arm. With 4T engine, would make a heavy bike.

I built a 350 XL powered King Scorpion (similar frame geometry to the Cappra) and it sucked. It was a lot of work for little advantage over the stock Honda frame.

thanks for the input gents,

after your experiences and reading the road test I have decided the gain/effort ratio would not be worth it.
I think we will rebuild it to original if it looks feasible

thanks again.
