If the side of the road that was driven on was the reason then why don't solos go the same way?
I enjoy watching them run, our local guys are 1,2 & 3nz at the moment, from memory 1 & 2 retained their placings from the 2012/13 season. The swingers are the nutters, trusting someone elses throttle hand when there aren't any brakes

The difference between turning left on a stripped road solo and a stripped road sidecar (with the chair on the left) which is what everyone started out with, is considerably different I would think.

I didn't say it was the reason I suggested it was a logical reason. I finished my post with a question to be educated if it was something else. Do you have a definitive answer? If so we would all like to know.

Lets not take this thread down as the photos and posts are just great.

Try these Peoples that are in the know ;)  http://www.ssrav.org.au       also check up on the coming seasons speedway dates.

The rider may have the throttle, but the passengers weight movements STEER the outfit..... ;)

Unsure why they go counter clockwise but it puts the old British gear levers on the right side and passenger does not have a chance of accidentally hitting? Rode passenger on Vincent's, triumphs and a water bottle in the day. While a few are nutter, not all are, hope my 3 uni degrees attest to that. Swinger controls where the sidecar goes on the track, depending how far fwd or back you get out. I just couldn't get it right with the big 2 strokes and ended up infield too many times and went back to solos. Bit tougher in the old days. To get a start on the Brooklyn Saturday night program you had to look reasonable at the Sunday morning practice. Not too easy after the 25 lap sedan race which was normally the last race. Learnt to ride high and wide. The dirt was like concrete and the cars left craters. No practice on race nights back then, straight out the gate and race. Lot easier nowadays!

You are right, Roscoe and Tim, the passenger has a LOT of control so it's really a team, eh ?, I only rode a few DT outfits, I love the bloody things, but EA doesn't !!!, I rode at Nepean once with a passenger that didn't have enough, errrr, bottle, shall we say, another more experienced guy jumped on, I told him what the plan was, to float the boat over the in field-tyres on turn 1 at Nepean as the main guy I was racing would try to clamp us down there, as I knew we'd get the hole-shot, and he was on a 1000 Kaw, us on a Trumpy, he'd get us by the end of the straight, sure enough, just enough room to squeeze the bike though, aimed for the gap, and the chair came up right on cue, and we got by. Top stuff, loved it !!

At a guess I would say Morgan S.A. (The Morgan Mile) 1978?
On the right is Johnny Dewhurst on the mighty HAGON TZ350 Yamaha
built by ace tuner Norm Edwards. I can probably find out who the other
rider is.

I reckon it's Gary Flood on the left. Usually rode with #2. Also the bikini fairing with the small
perspex screen. Just can't make out what motor.
