1979-1981 XL250S XL500S Speedo wanted
« on: January 19, 2014, 01:48:00 AM »
As the title states, just trying to find an original XL250S or XL500S speedo. That's the one to suit the 23inch front wheels. I am wanting to get the bike road-worthied and would like to find an original before resorting to aftermarket.

Thanks in Advance,
Chris(to)....

Hi Chris
You will need to be a more specific as there were two different types.
There is a one piece key hole shape and the separate speedo taco versions.
The one piece is for the first model and the two for sa and sb models which all had 23in wheels.
Only the 500rc with prolink suspension had 21in.
I am also after a 1st model speedo and have spoken with www.japbikespare.com.au Roy Dale who thinks he has some.
Hope this helps

Hi Bill
That's a cracker for $100.
I just checked my 500 damaged one and goes up to 160klm so I guess that would be for a 250sz.
Chris asked first but he isn't interested I will take it, not like I'll be doing more than 120.

Thanks
DOK

Good job Chris you won't get much better than that one.

So would anyone else have one of these laying around?

Good question , I have checked on a drill and NO IT DOES NOT WORK  :-[ at least on the battery drill it don't work ,probably accounts for the low mileage  ;D

If either of you guys want it ( maybe it can be fixed , or might be good for a static display ) you can have it for a donation to Graeme for the upkeep of this site .

Im pleased you asked as I took it for granted that it worked as it looks unused  :o

Will ask locally for another and post here if I find one

Bill

I had 2x XL 250S and a 500 and the speedo/odo stopped working on all three of them pretty early. There is a problem with them. I would consider a good looking non-working unit to have original patina! Still one of the best wheelstanding bikes of all time IMO.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HONDA-XL-250-/221358511416?pt=AU_Motorcycles&hash=item3389fed538

I had emailed the owner, and he did not want to separate parts. To expensive to ship the whole to Perth.....

just a thought,
wouldn't that be taken care of in the front wheels drive unit rather than have to be making all new speedo units just for that years XL range?
id get an old speedo and hook it up and test it out because you would think honda would compensate for the 23" front wheel threw the speedo drive rather than the speedo it self.
most later model mobiles you can download the speedo meter app and check it against that as you ride.. my old xf the speedo would drop in and out and thats what i did when it dropped out was use that app till the speedo worked again lol.. i got my motard roadworthy and registered with using my phone as a speedo because i went from a 21" down to 17" front and the speedo read wrong but using speedo meter it give accurate reading and the oem dash was still fitted for the use of the turn signals, h/beam, neutral etc. as long as my bike had a speedo that worked and was accurate it passed both rwc & rego.

A good idea - I will try one to see if it works...
