Hannibal's Elephant
« on: December 31, 2012, 05:16:25 PM »
G'day viewers I've had this idea for a long time. I'm putting together a old Honda 350 twin scrambler  but setting it up as a desert sled   :o with no BLING at all the bike will be built on a boot lace budget. I scored a CB250 rolling frame with a SL 350 engine  off Hitatreeonce back in 2009 the CD event in Queensland. So if anyone has ideas let me know. The bike will be for fun not a race winner just a big lump to hang out with   ;D jimson

Absolutely love the idea!
I've got a thing about 70's desert racing.  ;D

Hey Tim754, have you still got the SL350 in the shed?

Rock on Jimson ;D ;D......this will be a great build. I'm turning Nathans old DT1 into a desert sled too....same philosophy, no restoration, no bling (I've got enough of them) and lots of patina. Keep us in the loop mate.  Here's someone elses under construction SL

As mentioned elsewhere, there is a thread on ADV rider of just such a build up for the Baja last year. That's worth a look but they do run later forks and shocks etc....

I ordered NJBs straight from the boss. He's a good bloke. I feel NJBs are are a good cheap choice as long as the amount of travel is fairly limited. I wouldn't use them on a later long travel twinshock.

Garry, the pipes look great. At first I thought WTF ??? but after sitting looking at the photos over my morning Machiato and Tim Tam they finally grew on me. Seeing that you're building the bike as a desert sled I reckon the ace shocks to use would be a pair of Curnutts. These shocks were the hot set up for desert racers in the early to mid seventies, hardly a bike was seen in the Mojave without them. Although they're a bit on the obscure side here in OZ they often turn up on imported bikes so someone might have a set laying around. Parts are still available for them and there's a bloke on Marks Swapmeet that offers a rebuild service. Another good period shock popular with desert racers is Arnaco. Arnaco's still come up on eBay from time to time, I've got a few sets myself, including the set that Walter rebuilt on my Cheney. Curnutt are still in business producing mountain bike shocks (as is Fox Shox)
Both Curnutts and Arnacos are very advanced for their time with Curnutts being very similar internally to Works Performance and Arnacos having a stacked shim design and external dampening adjustment (that actually works) 20 years before Ohlins and the other biggies. Out of curiosity, what length shocks are you needing? I'll have a squiz through my shock stash and see what I may have.

What tank are you going to use? I've got a very cool fibreglass aftermarket Husky desert tank I can sell you for less than it cost me just to get it out of the shed. I've also got an alloy Hi-Point 2 gallon tank that'll suit but it's a bit more expensive and knowing you're on a budget it mightn't fit into the concept.

                                                         Arnaco

                                                         Curnutt

Desert Tank...slightly different to mine but similar with the clear fuel "gauge". Mine's more like the shape of a DT1 but lots bigger.

Here's a couple of very cool CL350 Street trackers............ http://www.pipeburn.com/home/2012/10/2/studio-motors-honda-cl350-no27.html

Thanks Ken for the pic's.Firko I'm going to use the old school honda tank in the bottom pic. I think the shocks are 330mm the bottom mount is a clevis type I'm thinking the NJB shocks are the way to go for the price and they look old school. Jimson
