 I had an interesting day at Nepean Post Classics on Sunday mainly with my inability to get anything right on the day, apart from the fact that the bike started ( just in time, each time). I was all over the place like a dogs breakfast.
 One thing that I could not cope with was the almost new back tyre that Adam gave me was so sticky I could not steer the damn thing.
 I even ran off the track twice, plus trying to slow down a bit into turn one soon as I touched the brake the thing stood up and bunny hopped all over the place!
 I started off with 15psi, then tried twenty, still no joy.
 I haven't run off the track for years!!! (usually sit on it)
 Couldn't even get 1 hole shot. Maybe my latest birthday stuffed me up.
As I was loading up my bike one of the winners on the day told me he was using 30 PSI!.  Now he tells me.
 
More practice needed.

A mate of mine had a go at dirt track pratice a couple of weekends ago.
we didnt know how much air to run as well, so i asked the quickest young bloke there on the day he said to run 12psi on the rear ???
I noticed his tyre was flexing a lot on the slides but he was real fast..... ???

I usually run 12 psi in the rear - Michelin radial trials tyre. But I have heard of guys running much higher, and lower. I wonder what is the most suitable pressure? I reckon 12 is fine for my 125, but may be a bit low for the 450s...

That sought of tyre distortion starts to happen roughly below 15psi.
I spannered for several leading Speedway riders during the late 70's & 80's and it was quite common that they'd go as low as 5psi.
Need good beadlocks for that, the early Speedway Barum's had the valve coming out of the sidewall.
A common thing was a heap of self tappers through the lip of the rim and into the bead.
I can't explain what happened or didn't happen for you Wally but if was driving pretty hard I'm surprised you didn't get a few hole shots.

Along time ago ;D I ran 12 psi up front and about 14psi at the back to start with and then made adjustments depending on conditions. Bikes were sliders 250 and 500.
 Tyres were Barum.      regards  Mark

 The tyre is a MICHELIN  X11 TRIALS COMPETITION RADIAL 400X18.
 It is stickier than well chewed Wrigleys juicy fruit.
 
 Slides I think the lack of 'hole shots'  was just me on the day.
